hey guys, i just got full exhaust, no cat, and 2.5 inch straight pipe all the way to the muffler. now my problem is, my car sounds like shit, it sounds sooooooo ricey, omy. also, it feels like i lost power, is this possible?? like my rpms seem like they tach up faster, however the car seems slower, i duno, maybe its in my head? ne ways, give me some feedback on this, thanks alot
(o, btw, i just went to an exhuast shop and got it done all custom, also the vehicle is a 92 dodge stealth R/T) |

| what muffler did u get put on? if its a reactive then im not suprised it sound like this. |

Your rpms are going up more quickly because your engine is breathing more easily (exhale exhaust)
Very free flowing exhausts on normally aspirated engines tend to lower your midrange torque/hp but give you gains in the high rpm.
You feel this "loss of power" probably because you spend most of your time in the middle rpms.
If you want to gain back that midrange power, put in some restriction, maybe a not so free flowing muffler. It will also quite down your exhaust note.
I recommend Magnaflow. |

| how do i put restriction back in? a glass pack would work to give me more of a rumble and also give me backpressure?? |

ya as reflux said drop a magnaflow on.
I ran a complete straight pipe on my neon, 2.25" all the way tot he rear wheels then duel 2.25" out to tips.... lost lower end pretty good, higher mid an top end was better. |

| yes, but in a 1/4 mile race, whats gonna help u more, higher end or lower end?? |
|
|
| SilverNeonRacer |
| Actually.. lower end to the 60 ft.. then top end. as if I'm acceling fast, once I'm outta first I never go below 3000 rpm, maybe even 3500rpm |

Oh sorry you put the exhaust on a Stealth R/T???
turbocharged 4wd?
If that is the case I'm not sure why you lost that low end feel because a turbo should provide all the backpressure needed.
Maybe it's because the power put down by your car is more linear now?
It may feel slower but it prbly is actually faster.
It would be quite the anomaly for a turbocharged car to go SLOWER by installing a more free flowing exhaust.
It's really hard to say without a dyno and there are no 4wd dynos in Alberta :(
But for 1/4 mile racing, with a turbocharged car you want the most free flowing exhaust available (3" is typically a good diameter, ppl go bigger but they usually have 500+whp)
When you shift at redline, the next gear you go into will drop your rpms by a few thousand. You won't go all the way back down to say...2000rpm (unless it's a diesel engine and redline is 3500rpm).
Most engines make the majority of their power closer to the redline so if you shift at redline, that will ensure that your engine stays in the powerband that makes the most amount of HP. |

| hey, nonono, i have the R/T model, the 222hp engine, haha.................. |

| Add a resonator. It will sound 100x better. |
|
|
| Antonio |
| where do i get a resonator?? what if i add like a 12 inch long glass pack, would that get rid of the ricey noise?? |
|
|
| 2003specv |
| If you can fit a 24" under there so it. The bigger the better. Get a Magnaflow. |
|
|
| Antonio |
| where tho? where kan i get a glaspack from....also how much they cost about?? (noo, magnaflow shits too xpensive, lol) |
|

| Just about any exhaust shop, CT should have them... I've heard of some ppl using cherry bombs in addition to mufflers.. i had a cherry bomb once.. it made my car louder, not quieter. |

Yeah you just shifted your torque further up the rpm range by opening up the exhaust. If you haven't put an intake on yet that will help to offset the loss, otherwise it might be easiest to just weld some highflow cats on there to get some more backpressure or add in a small section of smaller diameter pipe to choke it down a bit....
Adding on some glasspacks or magnapacks isn't going to do much to restore the torque, but they will reduce the sound a bit. :) |

It won't do you any good to switch to a magnaflow, I had a ractive tip on my car with a 22" resonator in there, when I switched to a magnaflow it actually sounded worse, much worse, the magnaflow was soo bad I had to get a 2nd resonator put it.
All you need is a re4sonator or two, what they'll do is cut that rasp out, I wouldn't even worry about getting brand-name resonators, just goto a muffler shop and get 1 or 2 generic straight-through resonators welded in, should be maybe $50 each for the resonators, and $20-30 for the install.
The difference will be night and day.
btw, whether or not you want high-end or mid-range should depend on your current powerband, if your car already has a weak top-end then there's not much point designing your system to flow at high RPMS.
I'd dyno the car, then you can figure out the powerrange you're most interested in achieving, then build towards that. |

| k guys, just an update, i just got a baffle bottle installed, my car sounds good again, wohooo, no more rice here, except i duno if im liking the lack in low end power and bigg gain in high end |

| its cause the straigh pipes. Straight pipes have very low backpressure and now have transformed your power curve. Personally, I would have went with mandrel bending, but that is also much more expensive. Also, a borla muffler and 18" res worked very well for me, but ive got a V6 and not sure if the R/T is a V6 or just a 4 banger turbo'd. |

| Which of your cars did you put the exhaust on? |
|
|
| Antonio |
| um...its a sixer thank u very much, haha. and i put it on the stealth. also, they are mandrel bent, but i have like only one bend and then like a small curve. i put a 12 inch res on, and it sounds gorgeous now. |

| Hehe its all about the res then. I had a similar problem in mine before I put on my 18", sounded raspy as ever and kinda pissed me off until I fixed it. |
