Here you may direct questions WITHIN reason regarding speed enforcement.
There will be NO trade secrets shared, so be forewarned.
You can be daring and try, if you're troublesome you get a warning, if you persist, you'll be in trouble.
With that said, I'm not sure what questions will remain :D
My question is, what's with the Photo Radar Sign thing?, some times they use them, sometimes they don't?, what's withthat?... |

Speed is bad!
I learned my lesson when a Wonderful Guy from Wetaskawin RCMP slapped me with a 187/110 71(a) ticket last fall while en route to a V8Less event no less. It was an expensive weekend, and an expensive lesson. In fact, its was all out stupid! I guess for some people it takes something serious to make you realize how dumb it was, and 600 bucks and 6 demerits was what it took. :( :nono:
He was nice to not give me a dangerous driving ticket, and other things, but because I didn't lie and I honestly felt bad, he was a kind soul and give it to me only semi rough instead of all out gang bang! :( :owned:

Since I'm new to Edmonton and Ontario does not have the stop light cameras and no longer utilize photo radar, these are my questions.
1) When you see a sign at the side of the road, either photo or speed, does that mean there are hidden cameras somewhere?
2) I've seen the stop light cameras mounted on polls at intersections but where are the photo radar cameras?
3) Are the photo radar cameras manned or unmanned? What I mean is, are they mounted on polls or in unmarked vehicles? |

1) hmmmm... not always... if it looks like a portable sign then yeah... but if it is just mounted on a traffic light post then no, not necessarily mean it is there. and about the portable signs, they don't seem to use them anymore, and if they do use them, they are usually leaning on the front bumper of the photo radar van.
2) photo radar cameras are mounted on to mini-vans. Usually windstars, but more and more dodge caravans are popping up to. And they all are "usually" really new, oh and they seem to always be clean.
I think there is some testing going on about equipping stop light cameras with the ability to measure speed as well... so they would be able to hand out speeding tickets too...
3) photo radar here are usually mounted onto minivans. and with the weather now. it's always a fishy looking van (unmarked) way close to the side of the road idling (those poor folk sitting in there gotta' stay warm)...
NOTE: this is just my personal experience...
edit -- and Andy I'm not a photo radar guy! :D

There's an idea... Are there laws governing the painfully slow? |

Section 75 HTA states that it is an offence to impede traffic. I have actually given out a couple of these in my career. When there are multi-lanes for the same direction of traffic however it is kind of hard to prove because people should just change lanes. I would like to see a "Keep Right Except To Pass" law be written for 4 lane divided highways. Then the fast lane would be free for passing or for emergency vehicles.

| My aunt got a ticket for going to slow last winter going to sherwood park from stalbert.... it was during a snow storm but they still gave it to her... Kinda funny * first time I've heard of that happening :) |

Photo radar is sub contracted. My buddy works for the company that does it.
Wouldn't you like to know that there are some little tricks to foiling them :D |

Hmm i wonder if there is set minimum limit here.... if so that would be cool (depending what it was set at) and if it was enforced as much as speeding :) |

I'd like to see more emphasis on some of the "other" dangerous driving habits, other than speeding.
Examples:
1) Tailgating.
2) Improper lane changes (particularly people who consistently turn into the far right lane while turning left, or move into the far left lane after merging/turning right).
3) Changing lanes without signaling.
4) Not using your headlights at night, or when other conditions require them.
and while there is no law for this yet, I'd like to see one:
5) NOT using your headlights on the highway, at ANY time of day. |

Those ones really get me mad!!!!!!!! I hate it when drivers drive in the dark without lights.... they ought to have their licenense revoked. |

my question, how much over the limit can one go before worrying about a ticket? i know that there isnt much tolerance in playground zones, but what about normal roads? i usually drive 10 over...
btw, great job albertrc! |

Well let's see. A speeding ticket for 1 km over the speed limit is $40 & for 10 km over it's $64. All I can say is if I stopped everyone going 10 km over the speed limit I'd never get anything else done. This question is very subjective though. For example if you're travelling 100 km/h & the speed limit is 100 km/h but the roads are icy you may still receive a ticket for "Too Fast For Road Conditions". Remember back to driver training (or that little handbook for people like me who never had enough money to go through AMA for the training) a speed limit is the maximum allowed but it is also dependant on road conditions, weather conditions, lighting conditions, traffic conditions, driver ability, vehicle ability etc.
I would tend to watch the 10 km/h over if you're travelling around the city. I'm not exactly sure what the photo radar folks have for a tolerance. Remember not everyone's speedometer is dead on & if you're going 10 km over but you're speedometer is 2 km slow = 12 km over. An improperly calibrated speedometer is NO defense for a speeding ticket. FYI - Highway #16A travelling west from Edmonton has a speedometer / odometer calibration section & from beginning to end your odometer should read 5 km - 4.5 km means when your speedometer reads 100 km/h you're actually travelling 110 km/h. Likewise 5.5 km means when your speedometer says 100 km/h you're actually travelling 90 km/h. If your speedometer is still in MPH ... well let's not go there.
Sorry Jeff but I can't give you a specific number. If I did & then a month down the road a police officer gave you a ticket for less than that I would probably end up getting a Subpoena for your defense. Plus ... I remember reading somewhere on this topic about not giving out all of my trade secrets!!
Jimbo :P

I definitely agree!!!!!!! This is why in probably the not so distant future we will be using more non-traditional police vehicles (talked about in another posting). We have a poster in our office that shows a rear view mirror with a marked unit shown in it & the caption "Now You're A Good Driver".

I've seen that billboard. It's kind of ironic cause everyone has a tendency to do something thats against the law everyday when they're behind the wheel, but as soon as they see that squad car, it's back to "normal" driving. |
|
|
| 1mns13 |
You mean abnormal driving, don't you? Normal is what you do usually not occasionally. I find it quite common that the flow of traffic is faster than the cops are driving and the speed limit.

| Good point man normal is the flow of traffic... it's abnormal to be so "perfect" until the cruise shows up in your mirror :) |

What about adopting hte "When in Rome" attitude?
If everyone is travelling at a certain speed, you drive at that speed too, but what if they are ALL speeding??...
But if you're the one going slower than everyone, then everyone is making an effort to get past you... |

Odd thing happened to me on the way to work...
I was driving along jasper and around 90th street (I think, have to double check) There is another car on my left speeding and driving like a total tool.
I see a photoradar van on the side of the road, I check my speed, it's 55, 54 kms/h the car on my left speeds up and the photo radar van goes off! catching the two of us...
I noted the time of day, location, all details of the other vehicle.
Now how the heck do I prove I'm not the guy speeding?... |
