Rock Chip question (any experience/expertise appreciated) - Click HERE for Original Thread

tRaCerFX
Hi guys,

So my car has a bunch of scratches and chips from rocks and etc (and also when i was washing my car in hughes, the pressure washer took off a lil bit of paint from my 5 year old car...)

So i'm thinking of fixing all that up...and from all the searching and reading the net/forums, I think this is how i'm going to do it:

1. remove wax and grease from the chipped/scratched area

2. Primer?
- some of the readings i've done suggests that i put a primer on before the touch up paint...
- what do you guys think? is that even really necessary?
- where to get auto primer? (i went to crappy tire but gave up coz noone there could help me, the reps there had no experience)

3. Touch up paint - probably a couple light coats of paint using the toothpick/matchstick

4. use Langka or this http://www.autobarn.net/mot08540.html to remove blobs from the touch up paint

5. Clear coat?
- should i do this?
- is it literally only for putting a clear coat of gloss over the touch up paint?

other questions:
- anybody know if Langka or any other blob removers are like sanding (dry/wetsand?)

- for removing minor rust, i've heard that i would need to use a 200 grit sanding paper, is it using dry or the wet one?

any ideas/feedback would be very much appreciated - also if any of the steps above are incorrect, please feel free to let me know =)

Thanks guys.

p.s: is there any store/shop in edmonton that sells primer/clearcoat and can give me advice on how to use it? (so i can just go there and ask them a barrage of questions hehe)

Why don't you go to a paintshop.. or an automotive place.. like: eg. Joey's Place.. on 115ave and 142st and Ask them what you should do?
and you could always just take your bumper off and repaint it for a few hundred!?

CT sells touch up pens, they're like the white out pens but with car paint. It gets in to the tiniest nicks but can also used to fill in larger chips. Far better results than the brush and tooth pick method. The pens come in make and colour like most touch up paint (eg. Honda, Electron Blue).

Clean out each damaged area before you apply the paint to avoid rust and to make sure the paint bonds.

I plan on repainting next year but until then, this is what I use.

You can also try to even the paint out with polish. I suggest using paint conditioner the day after you touch up a chip. Those pen touch up sticks are ok but you gotta make sure the tip dont clog up.
