Would you like to see the police make use of more non-traditional police vehicles (SUVs, Mini-Vans, Station Wagons, Pickup Trucks, etc) to stop the high risk drivers on our roads? This applies to both city police (EPS & CPS) & the RCMP.
Please add any comments you may have; however, they are not required.

| I think better crackdowns on people speeding in playground zones would be best, as these are the drivers that obviously care THE LEAST about public safety, in my opinion. People doing 30 over on the highway are IMO possing less of a risk than the people whom dont even slow down for a playground zone...I HATE PEOPLE WHO SPPEED IN PLAYGROUND ZONES! |

I dislike the idea of changing mainstream police vehicles. I'm sure they could use other vehicles when the situation suits the vehicle... 4x4 to catch an illegal offroader/hunter/whatever... minivans to round up rowdy drunks on whyte. Frankly people recognize the current police cruisers and realize that they should behave better when they see that car, to change the vehicles may just spook to many people?! Maybe I'm wrong, I've seen many sorts of police vehicles at edmonton k-division off 109st?!
I dont' think St Albert has a lot of playground zones?! Anyways, I never really drive through them, but when is the 30km/h speed enforced?! |

Benny --> good point enforce school and playground zones.. i live near an elementary school..what i find is that most drivers do follow the 30 kph during school hours but they don't slow down for playground hours..
Jim ---> are high risk drivers that big of a problem in the grand sceme of things?....i know that high risks affects everyone through higher insurance rate, etc ,etc.. would it cost more money to implement different police vehicles just to fight high risk drivers....if it doesnn't cost more than by all means...but if it does couldn't the money be spent on other things ..maybe fighting rapists or maybe recruiting more police officers |

| We have that here in Van. I actually like the cars, then again, I don't race on the streets. I saw some guy get pulled over by a Grand Am on Hastings in Burnaby. |

I think it's a good idea. I know the Vancouver police used a 2000 Impreza 2.5RS and that had mixed reactions. It was good in that it seemed to catch a few street racers (gotta watch for entrapement though) and the what not (seemed to be effective b/c people did not expect this sort of vehicle to be a police cruiser) but bad in that it had the potential to create a good relation between the import crowd and the police, but as far as i know, the officers using that particular car were not very friendly.
I think the use of non-traditional cars, especially imports would help bridge the gap between these 2 groups. Mind u some imports are not suited for all police duties, BUT it could be used in others. |

| Eyah... if the job requires a certain vehicle's special abilities like a 4x4 then why not? People are getting too used to seeing the regular cruisers around... having different makes of vehicles will keep them on their toes... and maybe think about their driving habits a bit more |

the military police in namao use at least one volvo t5r sedan... 200 + ponies with european handling... i wanted a ride at the last bike races, but the officer wasnt able to give out rides :(
as far as i know, the rcmp down east have a jag, looks like an s type maybe.
not sure if its a cruiser, or just for special events/pr.
i think the police forces should use whatever it takes to catch crooks, and if they can get some good public relations by using an import, thats cool.
hell, id even like to see the cops on some street bikes, itd give them a semi even chance to catch some speeders on bikes.
on that note, i had a good laugh last summer... city cop on a harley trying to chase down a kid on a brand new gsx1000r.
not funny, but i couldnt stop laughing as the kid pulled a wheel up, then disappeared. |

I would love to see non-traditional vehicles to pull over the a$$holes who don't know how to drive.Yesterday on ST albert tr. I saw a white car pulling up very(prob110km/h in 70zone) fast on my left, also that a vehicle was trying to merge into traffic on left. The merging car pulled out slow, the white fast car, didn't slow down until last second, then hammered braked nearly rearending other car, then very quickly pulled into right lane, passed merging car, flipped him the bird and sped on his way again.I said to my wife'damn that guys going to kill someone'.
Between that and the people that pull out 200m in front of me from offroads onto the hiway that I have to hammer my brakes on for,I think itt'd be a wake up call for a lot of unsafe driving.
I would not support it being used as 'cash cow' just to catch speeders and such so vehicle wouldn't be recognized.

i agree with ya.........using different veh can help police crack down on the dangeruous drivers.....aswell as make some PR points. Believe it or not but Edmonton only has 2, yes 2 actual "school zones"......BUT this does not mean that they are not playground zones all over the place.
The thing about police vihicles though is that they are ment for durability and they take alot of abuse (trust me).....and using non-traditional veh which are not specifically made for this demanding roll may cause more headaches in teh end.....ie repair costs . I cant imagine a vw beetle chasing a suspect (no other unit available)...and going off roading or jumping curbs  .....
and about the volvo t5...the MP's have one and I know a few of them and they say that is good for 240km/h....with pedal left  ......but tis always in the shop.
there is an RCMP det in BC somewhere that has a 2002 Subaru WRX.......shaweet :owned:

I just wanted to add that I saw a little clip on CFRN just now.
Stony Plain RCMP got a truck called "black knight".
It's all fully outfitted and stuff... not only with equipment, but with an ATV in the pick-up, Taz stickers, taillight covers, tint. Pretty neat.
B) I guess it doesn't really matter what we say, these cars are already here? :D
They mentioned mini-vans and all. But no mention of sport compacts (domestic or import). I think that would be neat. Be pulled over by some undercover sport compact complete with three decker wing, and chrome fender liners. :P j/k |

| hahah that guy was a fool to race on hastings... i was there this summer and this '01 vette wanted to race me on that bridge that goes over part of the port heading to gasoline alley and kitslano, you'll know the bridge.. soooo i did ehe and about 4 sec. later a cop zooms by but not in some cruiser... but some other vehicle i didn't recognize.. only a light on the dash.. that scared the shit outta me so the rest of the time i was a good boy in Van. i heard they're real pricks the whole lot of em so i didn't wanna get pulled over with a temp plate and insurance on a porsche when i'm only 18 visiting from alberta hehehe, time to get the car strip searched ;) so ya be nice in B.C kiddies those cops go hard on racers am i right? |

LOL having an import pull someone over would be sweet.
On St. Albert trail in the summer 2002 a 1986ish prelude with about 5 kids stuffed into it was at a light with me and revved its engine and then launched.
I just drove normally and then pulled behind them and flashed my lights at them for about 6 seconds and then they pulled over on the side of the trail and stopped.
I don't know if they thought I wanted to talk, or if they thought I was a cop.
Funny either way! |

| I'm against it, not because it will work, or because i'm afraid of getting busted, but i'm afraid that some hillbilly rapest will put a light on the dash of his chevy pick up, and pull my sister over. This scares me allot, and as of now, i'm telling my sister that if any vehicle besides a cop car/ van/ truck (all must be CLEARLY marked as police vehicles and the cops must be dressed accordingly ) trys to pull her over, she should NOT STOP, but either phone 911 on her cell, or drive to the nearest police station. "albertarc" could you give me some advice as to this problem, I've heard of crimnals impersonating officers and using that to target victims, so how can I look out for my sister when i'm not there to watch out for her (she's sooo tiny, 5 ft even) Even for myselfe, if i get pulled over by a unmarked unusal police vehicle, my doors stay locked and my window goes down only inch, untill i see some valid ID. But I can even see this as a problem, as i'd want to leave the car in gear, just in case it really is an impersonator and they try to do something. Well thanks for any help you can give, also one last thing, is there any way to be "sure" that a person really is a cop/ rcmp? Any tell tale sighns on badges or ID? thanks |

| I never thought of imposters pulling a person over and doing whatever.. I don't even trust an officer in uniform really call me paranoid but it's easy to get a hold of a fake badge, uniform and go knocking on someone's door... As far as I knew... traffic cops had to be clearly marked cause any idiot can get a cherry on his dash and pull ppl over. And a lot of ppl wouldn't stop. I heard of a guy in a vette on the highways, would turn it on if someone whipped past em.. he'd have em pull over then speed off. If the lights aren't permanently mounted in the back window or on the roof I'm not stopping |

| No I don't agree with this I think it's bording on the Verge of Intrapment I thought the Police were suppose to deter not Arresst Instead of unmarked police vehs put more Crusiers on the Street. And I Agree they should focus on Playground and School Zones. As well as I think there should be Random roadside veh inspections |
