Exhuast Systems... - Click HERE for Original Thread

Hey people,
got a question for everyone...
my idea is to paint the welds on an exhuast to help prevent rust from forming...

so... i did get some feedback from a friend of mine...

A] i could try some sort of rust check spray,... but be ready for a funny smell for a few weeks... and the risk of the paint just flaking off becuase of high temperatures...

B] find high temp paint (for instance... stuff you would use in the engine bay...), again a funny smell... and "maybe" it will not flake off... and "maybe" it will rust...

C] don't worry about the welds...

anyone got anything to say?

And Merry Christmas everyone!

Get a fine steel wire brush and clean all the welds off the rust. then use the high temp manifold paint

Well you could by a exhaust that is made of a material that does not rust.. =) that would work

:D
it's only the welds that i'm worried about. i hope the rest of the exhuast will not rust... well... rust as fast as the welds anyway...

it's these welds i mean to ask about...
(does the exhuast material look okay though?)

see there's pretty much two kinds of welds on the exhuast...
the dark grey one is only on the muffler, and the shinnier silver weld is anywhere else on the exhuast that needs a weld joint.

Well, if i remember correctly, in silversmithing one would use a soldering material that is usually a harder alloy than the items being soldered together. (I'm not quite 100% sure though). Does that mean that the same theory/practice is used in welding? since both soldering and welding are dealing with metals? ( I know someone who has a welding book that might help) If that is the case then I would prolly try the high temp paint for the sake of just not leaving it and then say "oh crap" when it rusts apart. If it does flake off or rust, nobody knows. But otherwise I don't think I would worry about it.

Marlowe, that looks like all stainless. It shouldn't rust at all. Is that for Robee's Integra?
