All DSMs were produced in the Normal, Illinois factory which was at the time owned by a company called 'Diamond Star Motors' (hence, DSM), which was a joint venture with Mitsu and Chryco.
But which parts exactly came from Japan is an interesting question... one I don't know. Obviously the 4G63 did, but I don't know about the rest. I always assumed the entire drivetrain was Japanified, but I don't know for sure. Where did the body panels come from? Interior? Dunno.
This brings up even better questions, without knowing, can you really call a DSM an import? What if 50% by weight of the parts were domestic? What is it then?
Ok maybe a philosophical question, but still... are DSM domesticated imports? |

| I heard that the 4G63s were made in mexico, there was a story about how mexicans used to smuggle themselves in with the engines. Maybe our cars are hispanics. |

| It was just rear-ended? That wrote it off? Does anyone know what the insurance companies are valueing these cars at relative to what it costs to get one? |

I'm still fighting with that one. Going to court I think in a few months. |

| So I take it they don't value them nearly high enough? :dunno: |
|
|
| beatshack |
| they probably do a direct japanese-black-book to US dollar conversion without taking into consideration the cost for importing. |

I thought you had to get the car appraised and then the go by the orginal appraisal from when it was first imported? |

It depends on your policy - typically when you have a car insured for a set value they give you certain rules to follow about where it can be driven, etc.....
When you get a policy that insures your vehicle UP TO a certain value, there are no restrictions.
I think it's section 19 and 19a ? |

I saw the accident and it seemed pretty likely it was a write off, smashed bumper, trunk, quarter panels. I highly doubt insurance will appraise a 16 year old car too highly. |

| So was it a rear accident? Is the front unscathed? |
