Driving Age - Click HERE for Original Thread

There must be a law that has old seniors between a certain age to drive throughout the city. I don't think they do pay attention on the road. If there is a law for kids to start driving at the age of 16..there has to be a law to stop seniors such as ages 65+ to stop driving because they drift into your lane and sometimes they take up both lanes.

not sure about here, but in BC, I believe seniors have to get re-test every year to ensure they are capable of operating a vehicle....

HOLY that is aweseome! AB should implement soemthing like that too.... I htink everyone should be retested every few yrs...

But i mean tested from teh govt. NOT some priivate testing school!

agreed with yearly testing 4 seniors

& i think Canada should adopt similar laws to that of Europe

even BC laws aren't tough enuf IMO

from what i remember my friend telling me (he's from Germany):

-it's something like 2000 marks (1 mark =~1 cdn) to obtain a driving license
-there is a 1->2hour driving test & the standard for passing is HIGH
-u also need to pass a written exam with similarly high standards as the road test

that's about all i remember, i'm sure there are more

Plus in Germany (not sure about rest of europe) everybody must complete a state taught driving course, everybody learns "exactly" the same as the next guy/gal.

I think that's what we're lacking, manditory driver training... I also think there are a lot of people who lack proficiency in English who drive and really don't understand our rules... My chinese friend said that his parents took their driver training and license test with an instructor who spoke chinese, which is fine and all... but how does that help them communicate with other drivers who don't speak chinese. (This is not just meant for asians, but everybody who's second language is english)

I think that manditory DT would cost so much though, maybe that's why Canada doesn't use such as system, but rather insurance companies use it as an incentive for cheaper insurance. Just look in the phone book for driver training, there is a company for nearly any "fool" that wants to drive... for instance the company I used, their instructor basically slept/read magazines/ate while I drove... I don't know if that was because I already had my license before going?!

BTW, for those of you "young" ppl on here, if you already have a license but no driver training, take it now, you'll save at least 25% from a respectable company on your lessons, which results in LARGE insurance premium reductions...

I agree with more consitent and stringent testing for all drivers. Having autoxed for years has greatly increased my own driving skill. A test at greater than the speed of the average slow driver would help eliminate the people who cause accidents. My grandpa probably should be re-tested for going too slow. I know we're all going to get slower, and if I was too slow for traffic I would prefer my limousine to driving myself anyday.

Think before you speak!!

I don't know about you, but I for one don't plan to give up my hobby at age 65.

I have a doctor friend in Vancouver who's near retirement, he's 65+, and he has a 600+ hp 300ZXTT. I've riden with him on several occasions, and I'd trust his driving any day.

Oh and just to remind you, comments like yours are discriminatory against seniors.

The reason seniors will NEVER get their driving priviledges taken away is because they are a VERY powerful voting block. Any politician dumb enough to attempt to take it away or enforce it at a certain age will get defeated in the next election... to be replaced by some dumbass who will promise to give it back to every 99 year old blind, deaf, senile lady driving a $80,000 Caddy at 20km/h in an 80km/h zone...

Ever hear of the story of the 70 year old lady that backed up and ran over a 16 year old girl and dragged her 100m while hundreds of screaming shoppers tried to stop her? Her defense was that she was too busy putting on her seatbelt to look behind her and she thought that "thud" was part of the car's operation or she ran over a rock or something. The girl died and all she got was a stern warning. She got her license back and didn't give a shit about that girl she ran over because she didn't know the girl and only cared about her "right" to drive. How would you feel if that girl (boy) was your son/daughter/sister/brother/mother/father/whatever? :tear:

Yes Jay, how would you feel if it was your brother...

There should positively, without a doubt, be testing for seniors.

If you can drive, you can keep your license. That should keep all the *enthusiasts* happy. But if you can't operate a motor vehicle safely, you should have your license taken away!

I never said I was against TESTING for seniors!

The comment I objected to stated that 65+ years should not be allowed to drive. Just because you've reached age 65 and above, doesn't automatically mean you've lost your capacity to drive. To state that without any kind of qualifier is discriminatory.

But testing beyond a certain age, absolutely. I'm all for that.

Heck I know plenty of 18-30 year olds out there who could use a refresher based on what I've seen.

HEck test them chinese ladies too! (I'm asian btw)

That old lady should be hung by the nearest tree, along with the judge and whoever allowed this miscarriage of justice. By the way tetesting slow drivers would be a good idea. If a person can't operate an automobile at speed, get somebody else to do it.
