Which vehicle for under $60k? - Click HERE for Original Thread

LeadSled
What would you guys buy for under $60k?

I am talking only new ( or maybe a year or two old) vehicles here, and with an emphasis on performance and looks, not much emphasis on mileage or hauling people (no ball and chain yet). I am thinking of trading in my current ride and have a limit on how much I want to spend.

I am tossing around a few ideas.. SRT10 Ram, WRX STI, used C5 Vette, 04 Cobra, 05 Mustang GT :dunno:

Anything else I should be considering? I am kinda leaning towards the SRT10 right now because my cousin picked one up a couple weeks ago and its a nice ride.

suprafast
i would get an 05 cobra if i was u. thos are sweet.

but the 04 cobra is pretty f'n sweet

blown_mr2
M fuckin' 3!!

LeadSled
Unfortuneatly the next Cobra is an 07 and is due out for June 2006 :( I checked

And the M3 is around $85k for a new one, not sure how much a slightly used one would go for.

Under $60K for a 2003 easily. Check Candatrader, there are a few of them right in your price range.

LeadSled
Thanks for the heads up Blown... I just checked on there and found this  I can imagine going to party at the lake with this sucker :P

blown_mr2
^^ Wow!! Definite panty dropper!! :D

ChromeDragon
Out of the cars you listed I would say the C5.

Mekanik22
Toyota Echo

nissanz32
Bavaria BMW has two M3's sitting in their used car showroom, both under $60k.There was also a guy selling one on here for about $54 000.For a year round vehicle I would look at getting an M3 or an STI.

TrevorK
If you go German, can you afford (or do you want to afford) the maintenance?

Going with something domestic, like a Cobra, Corvette, etc... will definetely be cheaper to maintain...

GQsmooth
c5 for sure

REFLUX
Get the damn Porsche!

I say go German, sounds like you want a head turner and as blown_mr2 already said...a panty dropper.

Many a more panties will be flying w/ a Porsche than with a Cobra.

You drive by.
Unknowing females: "Why does that mustang sound like that?"
or
"mmmMMM!! I'm g'na f*ck HIM" ;)

Of course a Cobra is a very respectable car but if you're looking solely for performance & looks, a Porsche/M3/etc is going to gather more attention AND have similar performance.

~S20o0~
STI:bowdown: ... but if you're looking to get laid then i agree with REFLUX 110%

DarrylBleau
Checked out an Infiniti G35?

I can concur, the STi is great. But it's sort of ugly looking.

What do you want out of a car?

Kiddo
get the porche hollyyy crap its so nice hhahaa

dmak_el
my vote go to M3

POX

s2oooR

Couple comments:

- you've got ~$60,000 lying around that you could spend on a car? Wow... how old are you? What do you do for a living?

- since you've got this $60k, are you sure you want to drop all of it on a CAR purchase? Don't get me wrong, cars are very much a priority to me, but I'd have to seriously consider where else a portion of that could go: on the mortgage? top up available RSP room? etc. Are you sure you want to spend $60k on a car??

- $60k is a huge purchase, and would get you a very nice car, definately. However, if that's the case and that's what you want to do, I would think that you would be doing tonnes of your own research on these cars and not rely on the advice (or Opinions) of total strangers on internet forums like this. If I was going to buy a $60k car I sure as hell wouldn't ask people on here what I should buy. I would buy what I LIKE and what I WANT, and who the hell cares what other people think? The best you could hope for is to ask for owner's impressions of people that actually own some of the cars on your list. Otherwise the decision is purely up to you, and I don't see how people on this forum would be any more qualified to make the decision for you than YOU.

I disagree.

I'd ask for opinions - I never would have thought a 911, which goes for 110K+, would drop into the 60K price range. I never would have even looked for them (Just assuming they're out of the price range).

People might be able to give him more options that he can consider, that he may not have thought of.

I know myself, when my house is paid off in 2-3 years, I was looking at getting a nice new car. I disregarded the 911, since it was 110K+. Now that I see I can get a newer one (I think the same body style even?) used for half that, it's definetely in my mind.

s2oooR
house can wait.... you'll have more fun in the Porsche lol :p

turbo_dave
buying a 911 is one thing, maintaining it is another. This is why alot of high end cars deprciate in value so fast, the owners can't afford schedueled maintenance.

I know this doesn't fit your criteria but i would buy an older muscle car and restore it to numbers matching condition. This would then become an investment, it would appreciate (if done correctly) in value. Also, nothing turns heads quite like 60s/70s muscle :)

If your fixed on buying a new(er) car i suggest a c5 corvette zo6, one of the best bang for buck cars out there. Its a triple threat; looks, acceleration, and world class handling. You can buy one starting at around 45,000$

Cougar_boy
BMW 850i or a Mustang cobra R

Jord@n
Personally, I agree with Inzane. Definetely consider your priorities in life before making that large of a purchase on a vehicle. Remember, a vehicles purpose is to transport you from point A to point B (And maybe look good while doing it). I don't know your personal situation, so I won't lecture anymore, but personally I would not spend that much money on a car unless I was very, very rich...

My vote goes to the Porsche though. But personally if I were to buy a new car right now, I would look at a 2005 Black Maxima. But that is nowhere near the same price range as the others you have mentioned.

I would say, that's one of the purposes. You might also want to buy a car for competitive purposes.. maybe you like autox or drag. The _purpose_ of a car can also be as a hobby. Or maybe you just like driving, period, and the purpose of the car wasn't getting from A to B, but the interim period (the travel itself).

So back to my original question, what do you want the car for? If it's just A to B these are all the wrong cars.

LeadSled
Inzane, I am financing the vehicle... I make enough to make payments on a $60k vehicle and then add tax and the APR % on top of it. I can drop $1000 - $1500 of my paycheck a month on a vehicle, all the other priorities are taken care of (or don't exist yet lol)...

And the only reason I am asking is because I'd like to know of some other nice vehicles I may have overlooked.

To be honest, there's no way I'd get the Porsche... it would sit in the garage all winter collecting dust. At least I wouldn't feel bad beating up on a Cobra in the snow and salt :D J/K

I think I know what I am getting, but the test drives would be the deciding factor. I am going to the city next weekend to take a few test drives, and I am going to also throw the 298hp G35 Sport coupe into the mix :dunno:

Thanks for the replies, and any other suggestions?

LeadSled
Darryl, this vehicle is to be a fun car to rip around in, carrying people and gas mileage don't mean anything to me, although this will be my main transportation.

And TurboDave, the muscle car project is already in the works, I have a 440 from a 69 Chrysler 300 that I am rebuilding to put into a 70-74 Duster/Dart Sport/Demon. Do you know of any around that would be a good project car?

se-i
I would say but S200 but I dont think it would be to good in winter. There are alot of different cars on the list you can go with.

dsl55
I don't think you can really beat the sti if you're looking for all season driving and performance to rip around in. Those g35 coupes are nice too

A guy in our office was looking at 50K cars and was unimpressed with the handling of the 300 Hemi - the car he was interested in at first. I talked him into test driving the G35 and he liked it a lot, but he finally ended up with a Volvo S60 - around 60k for a turbo AWD car that is pretty sweet. You might want to look at that one too.

crazyrx7
Get a used M5 or E55. You will spank vettes all day and still take home 4 hotties every night.

You could try ed's project cars in calgary .My cousin just finished restoring a mopar, a super bee, and he made some money and had alot of fun with it (550 hp 383) :). Mopars are highest valued muscle cars right now.

As your main transportation, it will have to drive in the winter as well yes? I'd suggest if you're getting something fun to rip around in (higher horsepower) you'll want something AWD or you'll be cursing yourself in the winter (or wrapped around some pole someplace).

Volvo S60R, WRX STi, AWD Dodge Magnum (cheaper, but leaves cash for upgrades if you're into that), Infiniti G35X (but only as a 4 door, which sort of sucks but it handles great.. I threw one around a parking lot for a while), Audi TT (personally, I like this car, thinking of picking one up maybe), I can't think of any others off the top of my head but you might find something in there that you'll like. Don't forget the winter tires in the winter. And come out to a snowx so I have someone else to beat in my minivan :P

Seriously, get M3 / Volvo / or H2 (if gas is not a concern)?
Let us know what you got when you decide to get one...

Neo-Blue99GASE
Id say STI, you can drive that think year round and outperform most cars on the street in almost all areas. Just think, AWD, very fast 1/4 and nice in the auto-x. It would be my choice. Its no panty dropper, but you know, if a chick dig's you because of your car, you will only have her as long as you have the car or until she gets bored. And dont get the H2, ive seen far too many at Soughtgate Pontiac to really like them anymore. If you want a hummer, go with the H1, those are much nicer!;)

srt-4toys
just buy 2 srt 4s

ehos
993 was the last reall 911 made. If you're going to buy one, at least buy the correct one.

Neo-Blue99GASE
OH, get an SVT cobra R. I just saw a black one in the park today and it looked sweet. To bad its RWD and would be a bithc to drive in the winter. A sweet car though

~S20o0~
if you want an STI with the 2005 look too it you better hurry, because the new model STI is out now....so i don't know how long the 05's will be made...:dunno:

turbo_dave
my advice ,if your buying new, is don't. Let someone else take the depriciation hit, buy slightly used.

I saw a pic of the 2006 STi in an ad in the paper today.. almost puked, it looks disgusting. Maybe it was just a bad shot but geeze.. the 2005 was just sort of.. normal looking. The front end I saw looked like a grand am and a freight train had a badly malformed bastard child.

Unless that shot was taken by the worst photographer in history and it really doesn't look all that bad, if you're going STi take the advice and go 2005. Lease return if you can find one, why not, save cash for mods.

no you didnt ... you seen a knock off ... 00 Cobra R's were available only in red

Neo-Blue99GASE
Damn good knock off then, he had everything from the cobra R body kit to the SVT badging. Or he could have gotten a paint job. All I know is that it looked real and it was the latest gen of them, though im not sure what that is.

2000z
Not a very hard car to knock off. The hood, front bumper, spoiler, wheels, exhaust and badging are the only external differences. Available from Ford even.

Did it have the side exhaust too?

Charles_00civic
Buy a 2000 civic si. Lip kit, 17" rims with spinners, Air Ride, leather, sound system, entertainment, lambo doors, HID'S, K22 WITH TURBO!!!! and a nice HKS or Greddy EVO2 exhaust. or get a cobra. lol. but the civ is nicer.

IIRC the newer supercharged cobra outperform the older cobra R in every way. It's stilll one mean looking car.

Skip all the boring cars. There is a BMW Z4 at an Acura dealer in Edmonton going for $45,000 right now. Call for a testdrive.
