Ok, I have a friend who wants to give me a 81 Corolla Sr5 3dr Hatch, it has a 1.5L(I think) Hemi in it, 5spd. New brakes/rubber/exhaust/windshield. Body is rough if I remember correctly. Not sure how many km, prolly 2-300,000km.
Now it is free, well plus ins, reg, etc. Should pass a safety, mind you the ins co I'm planning to go with says they don't need one.
I want opinions, should I get it or what? Basically I would drive the corolla and stop killing the wife's 02 R/T, as I do do paper delivery with it.
If I get the corolla, I would rarely drive the Neon, and I would have to return the Neon to pretty much stock, prolly leave the CAI in.
Thanks |

Oh hush.... I ment CAI... I'm ad work and posting between ppl walking by.
Second Q would be how would that engine in the corolla handle a turbo? Just wondering cause I have a smaller turbo, I wish I knew what it was, came stock in my 2.3L diesel truck, I could use, I got 20lbs of boost in the truck at 3000rpm, so hopefully it'll give me 5-10psi on the car. |

| I own an 81 Corrola as a daily driver/winter beater car. They are tank tough and cheap to work on. The engine is a 1.8 with the spark plugs in the Hemi location. I don't know whether the head is a real hemi head or not. There is a good chance the carb will need a rebuild if it hasn't had one yet. The big thing to check is the u-joints. You can't replace just the u-joints themselves, but you have to replace the whole drive shaft if the joints are worn. |

Yep 1.8 litre 80hp engine, pretty indestructible. Those cars take a beating and just keep on going. I think that car is REALLY where the Japanese quality concept first started to take hold in North America.
Going downhill with a tailwind (on a race track, of course) that little car tops out at 140kmph. You can also thrash the hell out of it, and still get 30mpg in the city and 40 on the highway.
I have great memories of when I owned one in the 80's, right up until some lady in a Volvo ran a stop sign and I T-boned her big-time. That was the end of my "Silver Bullet". *sniff*
The engine is called a 3T-C, and it's interchangeable with the JDM twincam version, called a 3T-G, with 125hp. You can also drop in a 4AGE, but that's fuel injected, so it takes more work and parts.

Not looking at putting any serious money into it. I had a Tercel with a 1.5L in it and that thing moved pretty good, till I tore up the tranny, it was supposidly replaced right before I got it.
Supposidly a trip to red deer or round trip, can't remember is about $15 in Gas.
A lot of older toyotas are Hemi's same with Mitsubishi's as well. |

only if it's had an engine swap. That would be an R series engine, a lot of work. Maybe it's not a Corolla? but a Celica? |

| The Celica had a 2.4 litre engine, but the Corolla model in 81 only came with a 1.8 litre engine. |

| Naw.. it's a corolla...with a Hemi.. I think he be confused as far as I can see it should have a 1.6 or 1.8L.... maybe it does have a swap.. I dunno, it's still rwd.. if that makes a diff. |

| On a second note, really whats make the SR5 different from the regular, I know on a 82 Tercel 3dr hatch it was the way the headlights where shaped different and it came with 13" mags.... dunno if there was any performance difference. |
