Impaired Driving - Click HERE for Original Thread

Here's a poem I'd like to share. Some of you may have already read / heard it but I think it's appropriate around this time of year.

I WENT TO A PARTY, MOM

I went to a party,
And remembered what you said.
You told me not to drink, Mom
So I had a sprite instead.
I felt proud of myself,
The way you said I would,
That I didn't drink and drive,
Though some friends said I should.

I made a healthy choice,
And your advice to me was right,
The party finally ended,
And the kids drove out of sight.

I got into my car,
Sure to get home in one piece,
I never knew what was coming, Mom
Something I expected least.

Now I'm lying on the pavement,
And I hear the policeman say,
The kid that caused this wreck was drunk,
Mom, his voice seems far away.

My own blood's all around me,
As I try hard not to cry.
I can hear the paramedic say,
This girl is going to die.

I'm sure the guy had no idea,
While he was flying high,
Because he chose to drink and drive,
Now I would have to die.

So why do people do it, Mom
Knowing that it ruins lives?
And now the pain is cutting me,
Like a hundred stabbing knives.

Tell sister not to be afraid, Mom
Tell daddy to be brave,
And when I go to heaven,
Put Daddy's Girl on my grave.

Someone should have taught him,
That its wrong to drink and drive.
Maybe if his parents had,
I'd still be alive.

My breath is getting shorter, Mom
I'm getting really scared.
These are my final moments,
And I'm so unprepared.

I wish that you could hold me, Mom,
As I lie here and die.
I wish that I could say, " I love you, Mom!"
So I love you and good-bye.

I've heard that before. It's very depressing to think of the reality that a stupid mistake can cause. I mean you could do everything right but because some jerk didn't think about what could happen you could be hurt. I think they ought to just take drunk drivers out and put a bullet in their knee, just to teach em a lesson and that'd only be the start!

I don't know if this seems selfish or just plain rude, but I really think that drunk drivers are possible the worst out there as far as traffic crime goes! That goes the same for people who drive high... "It's not the same as being drunk, really it doesn't affect anything!" "Then why do you claim to see cool colours (or whatever)"

So far I'm glad to hear that no one on this forum has been hurt because of someone else inconsideration!

Honestly I think drinking and driving has been blown out of proportion, don't get me wrong, drinking and driving is not a good thing, but I just think people are too concerned about it.

brandon
Man that is depressing.

Ummm as far as I knew (I may be wrong) but alberta has the worst record for drinking and driving which means we aren't concerned ENOUGH about it. A friend of a friend of mine was killed by a drunk driver when she was 16 and thats more than enough reason to be concerned about this. I'd like you to take your comment and say it to the families of the thousands of people who have been killed by drunk drivers and listen to what they say. Sounds like you need a wake up call.

ehrgeiz
ughhh I never should have said anything on such an opinionated topic. I'm not looking to get into an agrument with anyone, that will do nothing more than waste both our time. I don't need a wake up call, my opinion is unchanged, lets leave it at that.

BlueTurboEGG
ehrgeiz, don't even beak a sweat about it, noone is here looking for an argument (if they are, they'll be swiftly and quietly taken care of :))

I think people around here are looking for answers.

I do see you're point of view, how things can be blown out of proportion buy the very people who are trying to deliver the message.

People should be less concerned with the stats and more concerned with the problems.

That whole gun registry thing fueled by the shooting that occured at the girls school many years ago is a good example of how misdirected efforts have a negatory effect on the public.

ehrgeiz
Thanks BlueTurboEGG, maybe I have just been hearing too much about it latley. I understand it's the holiday season, but I honestly think everyone knows it's a bad idea, but those who are going to do it, are going to do it regaurdless. As I recall most of those caught are repeat offenders.

Yes and repeat offenders should be treated as such. They don't care about other people and thmselves and should get the death penalty.

Maybe not the death penalty, the second time.... that should be the allowing of the police to put the person in a full body cast... :)

I still think DUI is a serious problem... even including ppl who smoke weed while driving. I have no respect for someone that would basically play russian roulette with someone elses life by driving under the influence. I wish maybe we had stricter laws on people like that... perhaps worry about real offenders more so than speeders (a problem in itself). I think that bust a villenueve for the racers was overplayed a little much, because everyone there was there to race or watch the races, and not put people at danger other than themselves! Drunk drivers on the other hand don't "intend" to put people at risk but they act with such a selfish attitude towards life I don't think they care anyhow... they're the ones that ought to receive more than a stiff penalty and loss of license, they're out to kill or be killed.

1mns13
Maybe not the second time, but other than removing some of these people from society, there is no effective deterrent to prevent them from driving. The gov't doesn't want these people to pay for thier actions, and the offenders don't care about what they do. Impaired driving is certainly a greater threat to society than people racing each other in the middle of nowhere. Some people take a hint and the penalties that are in place for impaired driving work for them. Repeat offenders need stiffer consequences. To come up with an appropriate penalty one has to look what will get through to the denser of our population. Why is common sense dead? www.whiteline.com.au in the funnies

Really, why is commonsense dead?! Somepeople are just braindead and it's disturbing. That goes along with watching somepeople drive when they're sober and you ask yourself "how the hell did this person get a license" the ones that can't control speed, are always riding brakes, don't drive in a single lane at a single time... The worst thing about someone who drinks and drives is, they're the ones that survive the collision they cause not the innocent person/people in the other vehicle. Why aren't these people charged with second degree murder, it was thought out but they did kill regardless?! You drink, you drive, you kill, you should be slapped twice over and charged with more than a stupide dui and loss of license for a year or whatever... Charge em with such a stiff penalty that people will think more about the consequences of their actions! That would be commonsense, an eye for an eye, gross penalty's for something that is sometimes laughed off and at!

"With the onset of the legalization of marijuana, use is going to jump exponentially. They want to legalize it because too many young people are getting criminal records from minor possession. So because too many people fail to abide by a certain law, they decriminlize it. Lets say a large population of people go nuts and kill some neighboring people. For example lets say the people of Quebec decide to kill all English speaking people in their province, does that give the government the right to legalize murder and slap people with a $400 ticket per offence? Didn't think so, so why is it such a good idea to legalize marijuana? "

I think this is one of the dumbest laws the gov't can change, I think people won't be able to handle themselves with this. Something terrible is going to happen and there will be no one to blame because "it's legal."

On both comments above, I just hope that all of you and me stay alive for many more years, and dont' hvae our lives cut short by the stupidity of some yahoo that probably shouldn't be behind the wheel to start with!

I think its a sad state of affairs when someone being killed by a drunk driver has become such an everyday slightly overlooked event. Someone mentioned the Villeneuve incident as being overplayed. I totally agree I mean my car along with others was all over every major news station and radio that weekend and I'm sure after the big news splash of us they had "in other news a woman was run down by a drunk driver at a crosswalk now onto weather" or something similar. It just seems the police and media spent a ton of time dealing with something that COULD have been a problem in the unlikely event one of us crashed rather than dealing with something that IS a probelm like drunk driving. Now I have an example: At my old high school the constable there told us before grad that if he walked outside onto 163rd street he could nail an impaired driver within 30 min or less. I don't know if he was exagerating but that sure as hell is a scary stat considering I drove on that road almost every single day. If there really are that many impaired drivers out there why don't we have more checkstops?? Sure they are a hassle but they do catch people and if a person has had something to drink and still gets through maybe it would've scared him/her enough never to do it again. Just a thought. Any other suggestions?

redbaron303
My suggestion is media awareness... I don't think MADD does the job in the capacity it should. In some country's they cut off your hand for stealing bread, imagine what they do with an offense like dui, if it's an offense there. Here, DUI is an offense, it's serious, and many people just don't care. When street racing hits all the media harder than DUI cause accidents, that's sad.

"Look we can race cars in a remote location and possibly damage millions in aircraft crap if the car goes 200mph.... blah blah blah!"

It doesn't seem to me that our media emphasized the harshness of a dui. With a good lawyer I'm sure people can get off the charge and be back at it that very same weekend. If only alcohol bottles had pix of people killed by drunks plastered all over them, like cigarrettes do lungs and teeth... then people may think twice; what if sporting events could not be sponsored by an alcoho company, "molson indy" or even the track name, "budwiser MOTORSPORTS park." Doesn't it seem like theres an emphasis on drinking and how if you're drunk you can be cool?! Unfortunatly that image kills especially behind the wheel, even if it's not intentional! Why don't we all go have some drinks at budpark come summer, race, have some more, then drive home.... "we could have an award for the person to make it home alive and with the least damage to their cars..."

The phrase, "think and drive" comes to mind but I don't think it does in eveyone elses, especially repeat offenders!

1mns13
I'm glad to see more people discuss a topic that could any of us. i.e. a drunk crashing into us. Hopefully we can continue this message out to our environment and make a difference. Maybe our voice will institute stiffer penalties. Long life to all of us. As you said redbaron303 let's hope more people "think and drive".
