| Carrying knives, What's acceptable? - Click HERE for Original Thread |

OK, most of you know I would be asking this question sooner or later...
I'll do away with eh silly questions like "Can I carry my war sword to work?"
But when you go walking around malls and stuff, you see the kiosks that sell knives and the sort.
Now, about these knives with the "pocket clip" to "clip it to your pocket and carry it all day long without it getting in you're way"
Is this legal?, would anyone be breaking any laws by carrying a folding knive equipped with a pocket-clip in their pocket?.
Or is this soley rest on the physical size of the blade?
What about this new technology of "automatic knives?" I'm seeing a new trend of these "speed safe" style knives which look like an ordinary folder, but when you ince the blade out alittle bit, a spring takes over and "snikt!" out comes the blade... Or a typical folder that operates like a folder, but when you slide a switch activating a "torsion bar" and inch the blade out "snikt!"
Just a curious blade connoisseur. |

| well to my knowledge as long as the blade is legal to posess and you carry it in plain sight i.e a sheeth on your leg with your 2' machete in it... that's legal inm public places but obviously a lot of places like well stores, or restaurants won't let you in. I also heard that you must have a reason for carrying it.. i.e religious reason or costume.... and any blade over 6" is illegal to carry concealed.... but I've seen a cop slap a buddy of mine with a concealed weapon charge and it was 5" or so... Any knife that can be opened with one hand (switchblade, stiletto, sometimes gravity blades like paratrooper knives) are illegal, I've got some paratrooper knives and they're questionable... just get yourself an extendable baton for some ass whoopin  |

I should add that I don't go anywhere without atleast a 4" folding clip. That's the reason I ask.
I've also been known to add "more" but nothing over 4" |

I too, never go anywhere... (can't take it on a plane anymore)..
without my pocket knife.
.. From what I've been told, any blade longer than 3.75 inches is illegal to carry.
Most leaththerman, swiss, gerber multitools are legal to carry on your belt. I believe that might be considered 'in plain sight'.
You can check the length of their blades... I don't think any of them are longer than, 3.75"
BTE- 4" folder is pretty big... considering the handle as well. |

You can still take a knife "to the plane" just not on the carry on luggage. If you put it in you're compartmental luggage, it poses no imediate threat.
I have confirmed this with atleast one carrier Westjet, and I spoke to the head of Security about this, they are ok with it. As long as it's not in you're carry on stuff.
Hmmm 3.75" huh?...
For me the 4" is ideal because of it's versitility, I have a Cold Steel Recon 1 with a plain edge and Tanto tip in AUS 8 steel.
I like this design because when you use it with a reverse grip, you have a slight nub above your thumb knuckle if all you want to do is subdue your opponent. |

Here goes the skinny on the bringing a knife to a gun fight topic: (I have confirmed my answer w/ an RCMP member who actually is certified as an expert in classifying weapons under the Criminal Code so it's good).
There is no legal / illegal blade length limit (same as there is no limit on an engine's horsepower on the street). Any weapon designed to be concealed is considered PROHIBITED. Any knife that can be opened w/ centrifugal force (butterfly knives) are considered PROHIBITED. This also includes knives where someone has modified the blade hinge so that it's so loose a flick of the wrist can open it. Any knife that uses a switch or catch to open the blade is considered PROHIBITED. This does not include however knives that you initially open the normal way & a spring assists. Knives that have a stub to allow the blade to be opened by one thumb (one hand) are NOT illegal. Pepper spray is a PROHIBITED weapon when specifically used or sold for it to be used on people. When it is sold as bear / dog spray it is not though (let's not bring anyone's exgirlfiend or exboyfriend into the equation no matter how much you would like to do so!!!).
I myself carry a Beretta 1/3 serrated 3" blade clip knife. If the clip is sticking out of my pocket ... no problem - if it's sticking out of my boot & under my pant leg ... problem. Once again a little common sense must prevail. Likewise if you have a fish bonker in your car on a Sunday at 7:00 in the evening & you just came back from the lake w/ a nice big Lake Trout ... no problem. If you're driving around at 3:00 in the morning & it's stuck in the cutout of your door panel & you don't even have a fishing licence ... problem.

Yeah, thanks for the info Jim.
I guess alot of common sense would help in most situations :)
Those classifications sure are wierd though... just like everythign else I suppose... |

So, this would mean that I can wear my combat kit (which includes a 7 Inch bayonet.. and my fighting knife...) as long as I am going to the field ?)
The Bayonet is a Ontario Kinfe Company M9 black Carbon with black,
and the fighting kinfe is a KBAR..
- Just to state that my kit normally stays in my trunk unless I am going from my house to the car or my car into the field.. mostly because I have a thie holdster for my side arm and its all connected.. But still.. |

Well, technically you could, but then again, who'd let you into their store and who would call the cops if they saw you strolling down the street one day with your web belt, harness and all sorts of edged weapons dangling from every inch of you harness?.
If it's you're own feild, then I suppose it'd be ok.
I carried my JungLee Military Bolo when I was out hiking in Bear Country in a shoulder rig... It didn't creep anyone out, but being discreet helps too :) |

Basically you can walk the street with a 2 foot machette but can't have a 2 inch punch blade in your boot.
:) |

Yeah, go figure huh?.
(again though, you won't get very far packin' a 2 foot machete :D) |

I still don't understand the reasoning behind butterfly knives. I mean if you don't know how to use them properly you're going to do more damage to yourself than anyones else.
In regards to pepper spray I 'm not even going to get into the age long debate on the government taking away the ability of person to defend themselves.
Just sad that honest individuals are hindered from protecting themselves from criminals.
Granted there are extremes but restricting even basic defence items like pepper spray and tazers is getting a little extreme IMHO. |

I dea of gravity knives and anything that can be opened with one hand and opened quickly is so you cannot get the "drop" on anyone. Say a Police officer.
Funny thing is, I betcha I could end a knife fight faster WITHOUT bloodshed with a pair of butterfly knives than I could with a tactical folder that could end in bloodshed.
The idea is to psychologically undermine your opponent. Physically manipulating a Balisong requires skill and shows you have it, especially two... the sound is extremely menacing. This would make you appear to be the aggressor and cause your attacker to back off and think twice.
Of course you'd only use this course of action if you were met with equal force and not just metting another tough talking guy/girl.
The the attacker continues his path of aggression, well, I would hit and jab until he is not the aggressor, if he continues to threaten my life and those around me, I may have to cut him.
Hmmm... How would that sound in court?! |

im glad to get a concrete answer on this too, i always carry a boker 4" tactical folder, and sometimes a boker 3.75" inch fixed bud nealy.
a question...the bud nealy fixed blade is in a paddle sheath of kydex, and normally i wear a vest and i tuck the flap of the sheath in my arm hole, so the handle of the blade hangs down outside the fabric of the vest.
this, is legal i think, as, you can clearly see the handle of the knife, but if i were to reverse it, so you couldnt see the handle(it was on the inside), but could see the 3x4 inch flap on the sheath, is that a legal carry??
and ending a fight without bloodshed, using a good solid 4" folder is really easy, just use it like brass knuckles or a roll of quarters and pack your fist.
added bonus is that the butt of the folded knife can be a good semi-pointed instrument, yet is difficult to cause major damage. |
