2nd Gen Cooling Issues - Click HERE for Original Thread

SilverFire
Hey Peoples,

Me again. Just thought I'd start a new thread for this stuff since the engine should be good... at least I'm working on that assumption.

New info...

I don't have any coolant leak according to the guys at Abbey Road, but they did make a point of saying that the coolant pressue test won't show if a lip on one of the housings is gone and combustion gasses are getting into the cooling system.

Just on a whim though, I figured I'd see how hot the rad is getting. To my big surprise, with the heat guage at about half, the rad is COMPLETELY cold. there's a little bit of heat at the bottom, but nothing anywhere else. The coolant lines aren't quite hot enough to to burn, but I can't hold my hand on them for very long at all. I'm thinking that sounds like a blocked rad. I'm going to take it in for a flush on thursday and see if that does anything unless you guys let me know that's normal and that the rad never really gets hot, but that just doen't seem to make sense to me.

With that info, I thought I'd have another look at the coolant in the rad. The coolant wasn't acting like I thought it should. I was thinking it should be a nice, smooth flow across the rad, with maybe a little "bumpiness" due to the vibration of the engine or car. Instead, it was REALLY pulsing. I mean the coolant was almost disappearing from the rad line, then it'd spit out over the top, then dissappear again. In all I'd say it was about 1.5" of variation, but it's frequency had no connection to the speed of the engine. I only ran the engine at idle, (hot idle - 500-1k RPM, I can't be sure when it's that far down on the tach) and the coolant was pulsing at about one pulse every 1-1.5 seconds.

Still trying to get an oil cooler... I thought I sent an email off to Conroy last week, but I'm not sure... would someone let me know how to get ahold of him?

come out to our rx7 auto wrecker and get a rad that works and put in a new waterpump. quickly before you overheat that thing so bad that it is the motor that is the problem. Pease. no more talk, change some parts. used rads are 80.00 and waterpump i think are about 70. not much money to save a good engine.

That's why I was looking for your contact info. How late are you open tuesday? If I don't hear from you tonight I'll be calling tues. morning. I'm pretty much at the point where I don't go anywhere but home and work. I finally have enough money to do something about it too. I just had no idea the parts would be so cheap.

Sorry I took so long to post again, Been 'netless for the last few weeks... Looks like the majority was right. Got a new rad in there and it's rock solid at about 1/4 of the heat guage no matter what I do to it! I did figure out before I got it in too that I was just losing my coolant from the overflow. I'd fill it to full hot when I'd check the coolant in the line - usually overfilling it btw which would spill when I put the cap back on. Guess it was cool by then...
