Did you know that the Canadian Government pays the British Commonwealth $14 million a year just to be a member of the British Commonwealth? We don't get anything for that money; that's just the annual "membership dues". |

| At least changing Calgary Trail North to Gateway Boulevard made some sense. (Calgary Trail North didn't lead to Calgary...) But the highway thing is stupid IMO. Although I doubt anyone will ever refer to the highway by its new name. |

Yes we do pay money and such, have you ever gone to europe? they bend over backwards for canadians in a lot of areas, you go there and the people can tell you which regiments went through their towns. its a hand in hand thing, mutual respect of you will.

Actually, Ralphie announced it on Monday, and by Tuesday evening they were supposed to all be in place, so that on her trip yesterday she could see them. I think that if I would have had half a brain, I would have driven to Calgary on Tuesday night (late) and taken the chainsaw with me. Think that would have made a statement? I think so.
And as to being the richest woman in the world, I don't think that she has money on paper (actuall assets in her name), but if ever she wants anything, all she has to do is ask and it is given to her. I wouldn't doubt that the wal-mart Heiresses have more assets, but it would be interesting to see if Walmarts Gross Profit exceeds that of the tax base of the UK's 60 million+ residents, plus the $14 million from each Commonwealth nation (I have no idea how many there are, but I am guessing somewhere around 8).
I don't agree with the royal family. If they still ruled the country and had to actually work for all that they receive, then I would not have a problem with it. There are other countries that have Matriarchs that are active rulers, and I have no problem with them. What I hate is that they are "born" better than us, and so all they have to do is ask for money and their "subjects" are forced to give it to them. Not only their subjects, but as was mentioned earlier, the countries that they visit are forced because of social appearances to pay for their holidays to our countries.
And as to the fact that Canadians are treated well in Europe.... That is not because we pay $14 000 000 annually to the queen, it is because we aren't the pretentious dominating ignorants that most of the world perceives Americans to be. We are well respected because of our general compasionate attitude, and willingness to actually "help" in international situations through peacekeeping missions (rather than dominate and try and make others conform to our ways). Of course, we are no longer able to effectively contribute to peacekeeping missions because we have no way of transporting or supporting our troops in the field due to aging/lack of military infrastructure. Maybe if we took that $14 million that we give to the queen anually and bought a couple of transport planes, or some decent submarines, we would actually be able to maintain that image internationally.
I am done my rant, but our whole system of government pisses me off. They spend millions of dollars every year on non-essential projects (like the arts, etc) while there are still people that live below the poverty line, unemployment, 8 month waiting lists for specialist doctors/procedures, over crowded classrooms, lack of ability to defend our country from attack, etc. I am not saying that the government shouldn't spend money on non-essential services, but really, we should take care of the more essential things first. |
