RCMP Requirements - Click HERE for Original Thread

Jim I remember seeing a show a couple of years back about RCMP training. They followed a class of new recruits and showed what they must go throw. It was like the army! Im just wondering what is involved. I have always heard you cannot become a police officer if you have a record, is this true? What other special requirements are there? Also one more question, is it true you have 3 choices for placement after graduation? And did you get your first choice? Thanks

If you are going to be RCMP make sure to try and get into the ERT training..

ERTs are the swat equals for RCMP.. nothing like carring a MP5 in your trunk.. sure beats a shotgun IMO..

Here's a website that describes the RCMP's recruiting process:

http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/recruiting/index-e.htm

As far as a criminal record you're right. If a person has a minor record you can always apply for a pardon & when that's completed it's as if you never had a record.

There aren't a lot of specil requirements but a point to remember is you are competing against everyone else that wants to be an RCMP member. If there's one spot left & you & I are competing for it & our applications are exactly the same except you have post secondary education but I don't ... who do you think they will pick???

As far as your first posting leaving "Depot" - you put down where you would like to go (let's see if I can remember the specifics). You give your first 3 choices for provinces. Then your first 3 choices for areas within those provinces. Then your first 3 choices for specific detachments.

Alberta is my home province & I wanted to return but I was posted to Saskatchewan. Even though I was in a different province I was still only 3 1/2 hours from where I called home. I wanted to work in a small community which is exactly what I got. Stony Plain Traffic Services is my fourth detachment & I couldn't be happier!!

When you sign on the dotted line prior to going to "Depot" you agree to be posted to any spot in Canada. This being said "Staffing" will usually try to accomodate your wishes unless there is an operational need. There used to be a time when you would never be posted to your home province. Over time that philosophy has changed - lately the provinces have wanted the civilians they send to be returned when they become members; however, even though it does happen ... it is very uncommon that you would return to the Edmonton area if that's where you're from.

Is the RCMP a career that's for everyone ... definitely not. Is it a career I would recommend ... definitely!!

my buddy just god back this fall from rcmp school. he was #1 in shooting and met all requirements other than report writing. he wasn't given a reason why he flunked that part. weird. i'd have thought you just need to put down details. it's not like you're writing a book...
