During autox, I discovered some nasty problems with the power steering on the new car. Seems that above 4k rpm the power steering cuts out, or something. Whatever happens, it becomes nearly impossible to turn the wheel. Sort of feels like power steering does if you don't hook up the belt. Makes autox nearly impossible.
The car is a 93 rx7 with a 3rotor conversion. The fluid is fine and I had a shop check it out, no obvious problems like broken hoses or lose connections. I don't think it's overheating either as it will happen at any time, car in operating temp or not. Also, it has an external power steering cooler.
I have a few ideas but I thought I'd ask and see if anyone else has encountered a similar problem. I'm thinking that the power steering pump and pulley are from the 2rotor and that the output pulley on the 3rotor is bigger and is overdriving the pulley at higher rpms. Sound reasonable? |

| Don't the third gens have that variable power steering? So when you get to a certain speed it reduces the assist and it is suppose to make the car feel like it is handling better because you can "feel" the road more when there is no power assist??? Maybe I'm worng - and I probably am , just an idea |

I think you might be on to something here. Any problems you can see if I just disconnect the variable sensor thing from the pump? |

I believe if you unplug it the feel will be like the above 4000
all the time.
