Im looking for a DV or DVD Camera.
I think a DV better suits me because it is still a tape.
Which one is better, and what is a good one to get for around the price of 650?
Any suggestions of brand and such?
Thx

i like the DV cam over dvd, no specific reasons... i guess its just eazy to trancfer the vid... firewire usualy, some have usb2.0. i like canon or sony i dont know too much about them but if u go to futureshop or best buy and talk to the sales men they should be able to help you, just take what they say and take off the words that sound good to u, eg. "this has excelent reliability, but just incase, buy the extended warrenty." <---that means this is a piece of shit and im getting 4% commision off your misfortune...
haha im sry im not happy with them right now and thoght this plug would help me.
if u go on :google: and type DV camcorder reviews it should come up with some half decent sites... ALWAYS CROSS REFRENCE, between review sites just so u know your not being fed BS, other then that good luck  |

I'd go for DV, there are still too many drawback to DVD camcorders at this point to go that way IMHO (i.e. limit of 30 minutes recording time per side of a DVD, media is expensive, cameras are expensive..) DV tapes are relatively cheap, and you can get 60-90 mins on a tape.
as for which brand, I'd go with either Canon, Panasonic or Sony, all of which have the best quality lenses (avoid cheap stuff like Samsung, they tend to have crappy lenses). different brands have various strengths and weaknesses, for example Sony has a very good (infrared) night mode, but they mostly have a very short optical zoom (10X). Canon and panasonic are probably the top two for video/lens quality and usually have nice long lenses (in the range of 18-22X or more) but the night mode is not infrared so you can't really take video in very dark situations. If you go into a store to buy a camcorder, a salesman might try to upsell you to a camera with a digital still shot mode.. honestly, the camera function on camcorders are a waste of money, you're just paying more for a memory card reader/writer and the camera function which will take at best pics that look like they were taken on a very cheap 1mp camera..
some cameras in your price range I'd suggest taking a look at would be:
Canon ZR100
Panasonic PVGS19
Panasonic PVGS34
Sony DCR-HC21
if you have more questions, let me know, I used to work in the best buy camera/camcorder dept. so I have a lot of info about these things crammed in my head still.. |

agreed, JVC and samsung were ALWAYS being returned or brought back with problems.. I'd avoid either brand.
Malaria - BB and FS are non comission now, so they're still going to try and push the PSP/PRP on you, but they're not getting anything out of it, thats one reason I left - for the amount I was making them in sales, I was making pathetic wage.
and on the topic of "service plans" and extended warranties, its depends on the product, some things it can be worth it, other things its not. I usually buy replacement plans, cause if the product breaks I get a new one.. service plans/warranties however, I almost never buy, because I don't abuse the stuff I buy, and for the amount I would have spent on those, I could buy a new product if it did ever break. and I'm a bit of a techie nerd, so if stuff breaks I'm inclined to rip it apart and try to fix it myself anyway |

ya im sorry im kinda mean when it comes to sales, and i've had questienable experiences with FS (see ps below), bb on the other hand has been great i'd buy from them any day, replacment warranties in general (doesnt matter really which company u get them from) are worth it so much, service plans are kinda a joke...having to wate 3-6 weeks and that. also becarful of exposed LCD view finders not very common now cause of wear problems but on most electronics with LCD's they are not covered on warranty, and are consitered wear and tear if they get damaged!! so look for sumthing that allows u to use an eye piece or a lcd view finder, if you are comfortable with the eye piece.
P.S. At FS in clairview the :asshole: sales guy tryed telling me the P3 was much better then the P4 cause it dosent use as much power :dunno: just one of the reasons i make fun of FS
also same place a diff sales guy told me they sell klipsch speakers cause one of their HP media centers came with a set of klipsch 2.1 even though klipsch's webste didnt list them as a retailer, and FS didnt have a listing on there website  so like websites cross reference what one store says with another store! |
