Addicted To Speed... - Click HERE for Original Thread

Benny
Heres my Dillema Jimbo...

I speed...

...but...

I never EVER speed in playground zones, residential, or busy roads. You should see me, I'm ANAL about that, and I spaz to hell about people who pass me in playground zones. (Usually call their plate in)

But when I'm on the highway, and the limit is 100 or 110 (For example high way 2 between Calgary and Edmonton)...I always find myself doing 125-140 without paying much attention to that, thats just what my car wants to go on the highway...thats the comfortable speed for my self, and thats the exhaust note that seems to sound best.

I know it doesn't matter if you speed by 1km over or 100km over, speedings speeding :P , but what should I do about that?

Its habbit I guess, its hard to break.

I will always follow the flow of the faster moving traffic. Generally the flow of traffic is exceeding the speed limit anyways.

Any tips or advice you can give me, I know it seems simple to some, just dont speed, but I just feel SO SLOW going 110 on Highway 2 for example. Am I being a hypocrite because I get pissed at people who speed in the city, but I speed on the highway?

I would like to hear a Law Enforcements point of View.

Thanks in advance Const.

Happy New Year.

Cheers

i'm no Jim but I find that cruise control helps A LOT

GTS Jeff
hah i dont even have cruise control.

i think the reason that i speed is cuz i like the feeling of passing other cars. if all the other cars are going 20 ill need to go 25...if they go 110, i go 120...

ben, just buy a radar detector and be done with it.

Kato
I can't go 120 kph in my car for long periods of time, the exhaust note is so loud, it gives me a headache  . I usually will go a little bit more than that with faster traffic to about 125 or 130 kph and it quiets down.

Jim, imagine hearing that as an excuse. "I'm sorry officer but in order for me not to get a headache, I have to drive faster...."

That's freakin fast. In my buddies 'Lude, we made the trip in 2 hrs.
I don't condone it nor would I ever do it again, that was along time ago.

fastest I have heard for the trip was an hour 15 from the door of one place in E-Town to the south of Calgary in a 996 Turbo. B)

The Speed limits on our highways are stupid.

European Sports/Luxery vehicles are a fine example of this. Those vehicles are designed for a comfortable drive, and good gas mileage at speeds of 160-200 KPH on the autobaun. The majority of our sports cars from the import scene and even some few select domestics get better gas mileage and run more effectively and efficiently at higher speeds.

For instance, my best gas Mileage in my RX-7 that I have ever had was at 140 KPH, That is the perfect speed in fifth gear where the tourque and power curves get along with eachother.

Now in 80, 60, 50 and 30 zones, that is the speed I go. I personally believe in the 10 over rule simply because my car gets better gas mileage at 10 over once the speed limits hit 100-110 KPH.

The only thing that I can see keeping out road speeds at 100-110 is because of two reasons that I can see:

#1 Summer and winter...we can't be going over 100-110 to Calgary in a bad winter year, it is unsafe. They should put up summer and winter road speed limits (or even for wet conditions).

#2 Road Work...this is Alberta and our roads are crap and poorly maintained.

Loose
Fact:

1. Cars get ASS gas mileage at higher speeds. You want good gas mileage? Go 60 km/h.

2. I don't ge more ghetto than this... People like me who drive fucking 1985 Buick Skyhawks would be unsafe if everyone was going whatever speed they want. How am I supposed to merge if my car will only go 153 km/h? What about the semi trucks?

Agreed with PraxRX7's comment.

Safe road speeds are calculated with safety, road design, road conditions, and vehicle construction in mind.

Vehicle quality and technology has been continually improving, with great strides in crash safety in the past decade. However speed limits have not increased for whatever reason.

Vehicle safety checks to get some of the junker's off the road might help. Junker does not necessarily have to equate to age of the vehicle as most of us know.

Anybody else able to shed some light on why we can't have
HWY 2 regulated by a higher speed limit? Similar to the Autobahn?

What the fuck are you implying mister? Buick owns you.

there is nothing wrong with high way speed limits.... true cars have gotten better but people's driving skills haven't ........

hell with ... let's make the speed limit slower on highway 2 to 100 km/h...

there are enough deaths on alberta highways already....stop the carnage

Nightstalker
210km/h no stop in red dear. 93' Civic SI coupe $12 in gas (I only run 91 octane).

Screw that! 100 on Highway 2?

Its a fucking straight divided 2-3 lane highway for 300km! Anyone who crashes into someone or something other than wildlife on that road deserves it! Pay the #%^$%^*#%^&#%^&$%#$%^& Attention!

Driver education and alertness needs to go up 10 fold. Why should everyone else be inconvenienced because a few people cant drive and seem to have found their licence in the bottem of a cereal box...

Lowering speed limits doesn't save lives, proper education and training does.

The more people on our roads who are CAPABLE of driving the better.

wrxtasy
My 2 bits

1. It is speed differntial that causes multicar accident not out right speed.. IMHO a shmoe going 80 ( -30 the limit) is more dangerous than me going 140
I know I am going faster than most of the traffic and have to react quickly as I overtake vehicles... Someone going 80 effects everyone else and the dude with his cruise set at 115 and who is not paying attention will be the one that gets collected.

2. It burns my butt that the dude with the a car that can barely stay on the road ( pos car bad tires blah blah blah) at 130kph gets the same ticket as i do in a car that can stop in half the distance....

Somebody needs to calm down...
I wasn't implying anything about you specifically, look at the time stamps on the postings, my post was started in response to Prax's post, just took me longer to post than yours did.

By junker I mean broken/burnt out lights, worn out brakes and other safety equipment. I have seen footage of the 'Skyhawk' in action.

Totally agree with Benny.

When I got my liscence it was a 50 demerit limit, and I thought that was leinient. Now I hear it is @ 75 demerits???

Government thinking continues to boggle my mind on some issues. :thefinger:

SRBURG13
It should be like in Germany: The Tuf. If you don't know what it is, it is a regulation that every car has to be put through. The cars have to be in pretty much mint condition. Thats why you don't see old ass peice of junk cars on the road in Europe. But for some reason, there is alwasy the duschbag that drives that '71 Monte Carlo doin 20 under the limit, and is driving in the left lane on the highway.

If you are traveling on the highway, stay in the right lane unless you are going to pass someone. I was on my way to Calgary, and this chick is driving in the left lane, and I am flashing her (highbeams, get your head out of the gutter) and she won't move, so eventually I pass her on the right, and she gives me the finger. I just about ripped her friggin head off. Dumb b*tch. IF you are caught doing that in Europe, the police fine you. Driving in the left lane is a big NO NO unless passing. Why do you think they say that the best drivers in the world are from Europe. (Not neccessarly because of this lane issue).

Hmmmmm, what else. Speeding: I agree on the stay on the speedlimit in the city. But on the highway, 150 won't hurt anyone. The only people that get hurt are the dumbasses that don't know how to drive. I feel for the people that they take down with them though. No one said that driving was the safest thing on Earth. So we should treat it like it is.

Yeah, I lost the concentration, so I'm gonna roll.

PEACE

P.S. We should have our own Gumball 3000. Hehehe. Edmonton to Calgary. Hmmmmm. I won't if that will go over well with the 5-0.

MightyMidget
i agree and disagree with most of you......

a family friend who moved to e-town 8 years ago from england says that the speed limits on hwy 2 are a joke......he says that they should be at least 140-150km/h. also does anyone know what kind of drivers training and the driving tests that they have to do in europe (not a question)......but from my friend...they are FRIGGIN hard and cost $$$$ mucho.

I also am a true believer that speed limits should be set by road and weather conditions. I mean you have ppl going 130+ on hwy 2 and they get a ticket but the dip sh*t that is doing 110 in a blizzard gets nothing. its all common sense people. can you all guess which one would be more dangerous:mad:

anyway this unfortuntely will never change due to al the collisions and friggin crazy ass insurance rates.

dogstar
arrr, dont get me started on insurance...

as for the speed limit, i think if you lower the speed limit to 100, the people who are going to do 140 will still do 140, but the people doing the speed limit will be at even more of a differential, which will cause more accidents because you will always get some retard doing 55 kph in the left lane.

what i think would be a good solution...
a speeding/commuting lane.
if you want to drive in that lane, you have to take your car in to get tested, and if it passes, you get a big S sticker to put on your rear bumper.
then you can drive in the inside lane and do 150kph all day long.

itll never happen, obviously, but i think it would be a good compromise between keeping the masses of unskilled, uneducated people safe, while allowing those who can pass the driving and automotive upkeep tests to make good time on the long straight highways we are blessed with.

VR666
Here is what I think about all this. Most people think they are better drivers than they actually are. I'm not saying that you guys don't know how to drive, I'm sure most of you are good drivers, but do you really know how to save your car if it goes into a spin because you hit a patch of black ice. Plus the fact that most people don't pay attention when they drive. How many times have you seen people talking on their phones, reading paper or eating while driving. I'm sure the government doesn't set the speed limit at 110 just to piss people off.

To me a good driver is someone who is in control of their vehicle at all times regardless of speed AND someone who travels in a manner which does not hinder or jeopradize other vehicles travelling nearby.
