| Yeah that would be a great idea rig a car up to be stolen then bam your busted one of the better ideas the cops came up with  |

to avoid the high speed chases afterwards they should install something the remotly turns the engine off.
also how the hell did the driver only get 2 years in jail?
he stole a truck, ran more than 2 stop signs, was driving more than double the speed limit more than once, wasn't wearing his seatbelt, evaded arrest.....
he got off easy |

I was under the impression that most do have remote kill switches, I know on that baitcar.com site there are a couple videos where it says "Car was remotely disabled" and then the guy would start freaking out.
Very funny stuff. |

| YA I think the whole point is to keep the guy inside the car. They let him drive a couple of blocks then the car dies and the doors lock. Some even have speakers inside so the cops can let the guy know he's busted. We should get these here, Hell I'll help fund raise for this, better than some other ideas the cops have come up with. I think ours should have built in tasers in the seat, just incase the guy fights it. HA HA |
|
|
| Kyle2K |
lol, ya im up for the taser idea too.... and shorti, the whole point of having a bait car is so they can remotely shut it off and not risk a pursuit.
the cops let them drive a few blocks because i believe the people at the police station tell the patrol cars that one of the bait cars has been started, then a few patrol cars find it, radio the station and they turn it off.
i would also fund raise for this cause newtuner |

Ya but if you read the caption below the video it states that was a training issue and there where 2 times the engine didn't get turned off, and they they have re-trained all the officers involved since. |

| Who would have to pay for the cars,( I know when it boils down to it we have to pay for everything as taxpayers). I know myself I have had my cars broken into 4 different times, aswell as all the time I have read here that somebodies car was trashed. If you watch Global in the morning they say how many cars were stolen the day before. On average it's like 20 to 25 cars EVERY day. Which city department would be the ones looking into buying these types of cars? This might be a good cause for 780tuners as a group to push. Nobody on here could say this doesn't effect me. What do you guys think? |
|

| BananaBoy |
| Great Idea! I saw one clip with a bait car that had a GPS system and a camera inside. They didn't even have to stake out the car, just came by and pick the theif up the next day, or even better lead them to a secret chop shop. |

i agree, but what could we actually do about it? of course we could go to a city meeting or whatever, but do u think many people would go for the idea of spending $Millions on the program?
one suggestion of mine, how about we dont spend millions for the queen to come to Alberta, and spend it on somthing for the people of Albera (like this baitcar program). The queen can fricken pay for herself if she wants to come here, not like shes not a billionair or anything. |

| just wanted to bring this thread back to life after hearing the EPS is thinking of investing in these bait cars... hope it pulls through  |

We have bait cars in vancouver and they work but the thing that happend , is bait cars are in high crime areas for us like Surrey for you West Ed. Well what happend was car theives stopped hittin those spots and went to other places. In general thefts are not really down. In the high areas yes they are but now we are loosin a lot nicer cars out in our richer areas because the cops are stuck on the high crime areas.
Its a great idea and should be everywhere but , Evil prevails and if they really want to steal car , going 10 mins out of the way and into an area without a chance of being caught they will probably do that |
|

| Nightstalker |
| Well all they would have to do is get a 2000 civic SIR. That car would be stolen with in a week from west ed for sure. |

Wasn't there a blip about this on the news yesterday about starting a bait car program in the city?.
They showed the now infamous meth-head video during this segment (screaming and flailing wildly while ripping around at 123 kms/h)
Or were they just talking about it?. I think the bait car is a great idea personally. |

| The cars they use are ones that have been seized by police. |

| there was a similar project done in regina and it worked for a while. they used a neon, an intrepid and a caravan. there was alot of work done to convert the vehicles to be "bait". the only problem that came up was after a while, the guys that were stealing alot of cars became wise to which vehicles they were, and the bait cars became ineffective. i know they were trying to swap vehicles with other major centers to keep the cars effective. if that was the case, edmonton should get involved. |

when you get caught for something on that they dont charge you for all the small crimes they focus on the biggest crime becasue lawyers can get you out of all of those smaller ones easily. |

In Canada, sentences are served concurrently, not consecutively. If he got two years for theft over $5k he wouldnt have to serve the sentences for anything less than two years. In the US, terms are often consecutive, that's why you see serial killers get 300+ years in jail. |

Are there any statistics to show that this type of program actually lowered the number of cars stolen, in any given city, over any given time period? I realize they'll catch more thieves this way, but that's not the important number to be looking at.
Vehicle owners will certainly be the ones paying for the bait cars in some form or another. The only people that have a vested interest in stopping the thefts are the owners, and the city (ie: tax money).

| set up your own bait car and have an auto lock..so it locks him in. and call the police and wait...knowing how long they take in the city....hed be there a few days:p |

| yeah we should have bait cars but with plexi windows and flame throwers inside. to burn those bastards alive instead of giving them 2 years to sit in a thinking cell to figure out how many more cars they can steal or break into when they get out. i'll pay taxes to see them burn anyday. |
