engine in car, clutch issue. - Click HERE for Original Thread

dogstar
im freaking out here, i want to drive my car so bad.

some of you know the story... basically theres been an engine rebuild in the works for the last 9 or 10 months, and finally it was done, so i thought this would be a good weekend for the swap.

we started friday night, supra_devil and Dave (many thanks guys :D ) helping, beginning around 6 pm, and finishing just before 9 pm with the engine out and on the ground.

around noon on saturday we started, and the new engine was back in the car by about 9pm, producing oil pressure.

well, we got the old engine out and the new in easy enough, but i KNEW something had to go wrong.

im getting some seriously funny behavior from the clutch.
the pedal will travel about 2-3 inches before starting to firm up, then has normal pressure and seems to actuate normally, although at a much lower point than before.

beyond draining and refilling the clutch fluid with dot4, nothing was changed in the clutch system, it all went in the same way it came out, and was swapped over by supra_devil, who knows exactly where it all goes.

i have a hard time believing that with nothing changed, the pedal could go so far out of alignment, so im thinking there has to be either an air bubble, a leak in the line, or the slave cylinder is screwed.

we've bled it till were blue in the face, and it improved from where it is, but its just not good enough.

Well,

From my recent experience, you will need to drop the tranny again and reinstall it.

Did you grease the input shaft that the clutch disk slides on?

You have tested this while driving?

Keep us informed.

CanuckDave
well the clutch is not perfect, but it is drivable, and the engine is actually in and running / driving now, after plenty of frustration, swearing, smashing ratchets on the garage floor etc.. success! that was quite a weekend, learned a ton..
took plenty of pics through the process, will be posting all the good ones as soon as I've got time, probably tomorrow evening after work.
damn was it ever good to see that engine actually start, run and drive. the car hauls ass now!!

Supra_devil
hauls ass? if the road was grass, it would be a nice fancy john deer riding mower, thast how nice it is, lol. theres almost always issues with these sorts of things, this time was no exception. the highlights are watching flame in the end of the tailpipe, large injectors. and hearing it scratch tire going into third during its break in still. its fast, just how we like em:bthumbup:
part 2: IC piping, once thats made up then its turbo time.

dogstar
it is good.

scratched the tires going into third, and on the way home, i humiliated a 99 camaro v6 with bolt on mods.

so far the general consensus is that the slave cylinder is leaking or worn, and that if i get a new one and properly bench bleed it, the problem should go away.
i figure ill order a stainless braided line while im at it, for 29 bucks shipped, its hard to go wrong.

shes leaking a little less...seems the seals are swelling up nicely, i expect drips and drops for another few days, maybe a week, then i start chasing leaks.

thanks again dave and glenn.

HeavyEarly87T
Well done guys, did ya sleep at all?

CanuckDave
ugh, not much, going in to work now, this should be a fun day :p

I put some pics up..

Supra_devil
i got a full 8+ hours a night, lol. come on dave, you got lots of sleep, you didn't even call me till like 3 on sunday. lol.

celica83_gts
Congrats Barry! I was under the impression the turbo was going on right away, now you have even more to look forward to! Hope to see it this weekend.

Clutch cylinders seem to dislike any change in their lives, I had similar issues with my winter car. I think that the piston moves to a different part of the bore, and with worn parts, just won't seal consistently. A new slave should solve the problem.

Bob

Supra_devil
everyone seemed to think the turbo was going in at the same time as the motor even though we said all along it wasn't :dunno: hell some people i had to explain to several times why the motor was at my house, why i paid for some of it, and it was going into barrys car. they couldn't grasp it, lol.

for the turbo there are still a couple parts that barry needs and IC piping needs to be made as well as mounts for the IC. exhaust needs to be done too, but thats probably going to be done after the swap, driving around with only a downpipe should be reasonable enough, lol.

dogstar
aaahahahahahahaha

so, we bust our asses so i can get the engine in the car and running nice... i make plans to dyno it, yadda yadda...

yeah, and i get sick on monday...go to doctor and find out its mono.
so i STILL cant drive the car.

well, i could, but why drive somewhere when i feel like 10 pounds of shit in a 5 pound bag.

ps: if i see any of you supraclub people lurking around my car, be aware, i can still aim the shotgun ;)

lol, hope to be seein you guys again soon.

oh, and im probably ordering a clutch slave tomorrow, along with a braided SS clutch line.

details in another post.
