Sometimes I do...
Most of the time I shut down.
What you can do, is log out. By log out, I mean 'close all programs and log on as a different user' (win9x)
Some apps and even the OS itself, misbehaves and use up the system resources, without releasing the memory back into the pool.
The only way to reclaim the resources is either to consistently log off or restart the pc.
There are utilities available that reclaim these resources, but I find a reboot will cure any weird errors |

I used to leave it on 24/7 when i was participating in distributed.net RC5 cracking efforts. Now that it's finished, I turn it off when I don't use it.

| I think my idle on ICQ says I'm at a few weeks...I never reboot this bitch! It runs 24/7, and except for a reboot for new programs or updates and such, thats the most downtime it sees. |

| I'm with Benny. I rarely turn off my computer. Too lazy to turn it on and off. Plus, I'm too unpatient to wait for my computer to boot up. |

my up time was at about 5 months after i got windows XP behaving nicely, then the only reason i shut it down was to install a hard drive.
win xp is great, i used to have to reinstall windows 98se about every 4-6 months, but not so now :) |

| I personally shut all my comps down when I'm not using em even if I'll be back in 2 hrs.... call me paranoid I guess... I'm running win 2x on my new new comp and 98 on the 2 older ones all hooked up with a linksys router which has a natural firewall then i have sygate firewall tuned to a 'T' and I still shut everything down.... doesn't your comp need a good reboot once in a while to get things in working order? Or do I worry too much? |

with win95/98, i either left it running perpetually and hoped for no problems, or i shut it down nightly.
win2k i havent used much, heard its just an older, ugly version of win XP, so it should be alright to leave fired up.
winME... um, dont use it, nuff said
winXP, do whatever you like for shutdowns.
unless you mess with registry settings, or all kind of funky bootlegged unregistered programs, you usually dont have any problems. |

i'm using win2k right now. it's pretty good. it's the upgrade to NT but user friendlier. way better than 95/98 and hell of a lot better than ME |

24/7, my longest stretch for the comp staying on without a restart was on good ol' Win98 at 22days and 14 hours.
