External hard drives - Click HERE for Original Thread

ChromeDragon
Who has had experience with these? I just picked up a USB2.0 160gb AcomData unit with push button backup and it fucking OWNS!

This HD is nearly as fast, if not as fast as my laptop's internal HD. Transfers are damn fast either direction and it has no problems running media files from it. Seeing as I take so many photos I think this was a great investment.

Oh yeah, reg price on the HD was $229.99. I got a $60 instant rebate and will soon receive a $70 mail in rebate for a total of $100 for this kick ass little HD. :D

So yeah, does anyone else use external HDs?

I just use a little flash drive card. It is 512MB so it isn't nearly as big as yours but I am quite happy with it.

They rock...

I've been using my 40GB external for quite some time, love it.

No-Pistons
any one know much about the wireless hd???

TurboMR2
Matt i'm actually looking at purchasing an external HDD.
do you mind if I ask where you bought yours form?

ChromeDragon
I got it at Compusmart. I don't know if you'll be able to get the instant rebate anymore, but you should still be able to get the $70 mail-in rebate.

I've been 200gig Segate in a Bytecc case for about a year now. My main computer is my laptop with a 40gig hd so the extra storage rocks. :)

Id like to get somthing like this in the future. I love that its a print server too. Maxtor

Here are reviews of some other network drives Tom's Networking

I have a 120gig in an external case, only down side to mine is it does need a wall outlet. The thing is USB2 is 480mbit, and IDE is 133Mbit.. so you can run full potential of harddrives. I do hear the 1394 drives are faster for some reason, for a laptop, other than the cost of the drives, I'd recommend a 2.5" external HDD, as it runs of USB power alone.. no wall outlet required.

The only issue I've run into is win 98/ME need a driver and have issues with the larger drives.

im going to toss my old 80 into an external box one of these days, use it for backups, but ill just go for a big internal drive as my main.

That sounds like an awesome tool. How does it operate. Do you just plug it into your USB and it becomes a D:\ etc drive that your computer reconizes? Do you need any special software? Does it work on older 1.0 usbs?

ChromeDragon
Essentially yes, you just plug it in and your computer should recognize it as an external hard drive. It will work on USB 1.1, but it won't be nearly as quick obviously.

Using this HD I can say that it is pretty much as fast as the internal HD of my laptop. I wouldn't be trying to play games over it or anything, but it works great for transferring and running files.

SilverNeonRacer
I have a usb2.0 external HDD with a 8mb 7200rpm 120gb drive in it, PATA and I played games off it, all my music is on it.

I need to get an external enclosure that'll take a SATA drive now...

It will work with any USB plug, but transfering a 1 gig file will take hours. For about 30 bucks, you can get a PCI card with USB 2 and you'll be far better off.

With USB 2, you and run movies, directly off of the exteral HD. It's not recomened, but I have seen some people run games off the the exteral drive as well.

SilverNeonRacer:
I wait a bit. I think enclosures with SATA 2 will be out before the end of the year. 3Gpbs and NCQ baby!

SilverNeonRacer
I have an 120SATA drive.. I had a PATA drive, I swapped them cause I kinda had to.. and my laptop obviously can't take SATA drives and my current enclosure won't take SATA.

I ran games off my PATA USB 2 external enclosure, no probs, but it was an 120gb 7200rpm 8MB cache drive.

gerrycurl
anyone selling a external drive?
