DSM
What are your goals for this car and people might be able to give you a more precise car.

jdmguy
well id like to build up the engine, but right now im not to sure, o ya i would prefer a RWD, so other than that im not to picky

5L Mustang would be your cheapest/fastest/easiest to upgrade otpion.

thats true but u see my step dad is building a 70 1/2 camaro and i was looking for an import becuz if i want to drive a domestic i can just drive his. i already know that a stock na rx7 should be faster than a stock 240, but i also know that rotary parts are expensive so if you can think of any cars within the same class as those two lemme know

DeathBy240
My 200SX turbo is probably quite a bit quicker than the n/a RX-7. And its only $2500!

red88.n/a.rx
dont get an n/a rx7, you will never make it fast without boost.

jdmguy
just wondering if it would cost less to buy an N/A and turbo it (used turbo), or is it cheaper to just buy the turboed version?

It'd be cheaper to buy one without an engine and swap in an LS1 :)

Agreed. Turbo the n/a RX-7 is too much of a frankenstien. It can be done but theres alot of tuning that needs to be done. Its not like a honda where you can just throw on a turbo and s-afc and you're good to go.

turbo_dave
just throw in a small block chevy.. no computers needed :) your pops could probably help you out with it.

If we've learned anything from the rotary boys its that, unless you got the money to fix'r when she falls, the rotary is not for you. They are good engines when cared for, but definatley high maintenance.

Or so I have been lead to believe?

it all would depend on what you like i guess, you could get a late 80's mustang GT with nice hp or camaro z28 if you want something with a big v8?

I had an 81 RX7 I bought for $1000, got a street-ported 13B for $1000, the dual race exhaust from Racing Beat for $1000, rear axle/disk brakes/higher ratio diff for about $750, and Holley carb/intake and a few other bits for about $500. All told, about $4250 for a car that would take any stock Mustang off the line, and do 360's on dry pavement from a standing start. No boost, plenty fast.

Conroy's unloading a lot of his RX7 stuff, so you could probably do it cheaper now than when I did it

80's mustangs?:thumbsdow. Dont get me wrong i like old muscle cars but the 5L mustang is the ugliest ever.....IMHO.

Supra_devil
well an often forgotten car is the Supra. i have seen mk3 turbos for $3000 or so, they are beaten and need some TLC but they have a great motor that puts out lots of power.
or the mk2 supra, light, very nice to drive, can be fast with a turbo swap, a 6M, a 7M(mk3 motor), all are easy swaps that can use your stock motor mounts, tranny, rad, etc.
something to look into.
240's and rx-7's are nice cuz they have a lot of aftermarket manufacturers to choose from.

Altezza
Toyota MR2, Celica, Mazda MX6, MX3, Acura Integra, Eagle Talon, Volkswagon Golf all decent small cars. Good gas milage, and all can be tuned if you really want an import then get a JDM vehicle there is a few that are RWD and 5g's

Keith303
a talon/eclipse/laser AWD will net you the most preformance for 5g, wether it be the price of the car by itsself, or combined with mods.

jdmguy
thx for the imput, im thinking of going with an early 90s talon tsi, but thx for all the great tips;)
