what are the laws and or restrictions refering to right hand drive cars.

Xx D-MAN xX
Must be atleast 15 years old and has passed the provincial mechanical inspection to prove that it meets all safety standards and that it's road worthy.

Contact Import Concern or visit their website for more detailed information...

chico_kj_23
why do they have to be at least 15 years old

dance_of_curse

chico_kj_23

If you don't believe us(I've had people tell me their friends friend has less than 15 year old LEGAL imports which is a lie) then you can look up the government website(I knwo someone has it... www.riv.ca? I totally forget haha) or calll our government.

dance_of_curse
what i posted has all the answers and if you think anyone can get through it tehir liers and tell them to stfu cause theyre worng

BLK_LBL
apparently if you were a citizen of japan, you could bring over your car as 'personal belongings" if you were to come to canada and obtain citizenship.

once the car is here, i dont think you would be able to register it though.

dance_of_curse
no yeah there are legal way to do it but then its a hassle why no just move to japan and then buy the car:dunno:

mx73someday
Don't get mixed up though, there are some dumb shits who have imported vehicles newer than 15 years old from Japan by lying about the age of the vehicles.

dsl55
Oh Yeah of course, the white skyline from 2004 rings a bell.

Cobra_R
I think the 15 year law is

a) to long
b) really stupid

what would be wrong with it becoming 10 years :(

dance_of_curse
lots of things it so that theres not an inflow of machines that are from over seas...its not really a jdm only law its anycar from any other country except the states

Here's a silly Q.. what if I wanted to buy a 91, a really good one came for auction so I buy it, can I import it and store it myself til it's legal to be registered and insured? Or use it for "Off road purposes" til it's legal?

The only way you could do that is if you buy it, store it in Japan, and then bring it over once it's 15 years old. I beliieve if you import it for offroad use, you will never be able to register it for road use.

SilverNeonRacer
Well thats no fun...

dsl55
Import it and store it I think you could. They'd never have to know, even if you illegally imported it, its not like you're driving it around, so as long as you waited till it was legal to register it, you wouldnt be commiting insurance fraud or anything.

dance_of_curse
yeah u would teh car cannot touch canadian soil unless its 15 years old at the tiem of arrival if you imported and stored it then reged it when it becomes legal...it would still be illegal:bthumbup: the link i put up before is not just some guidelines its the law and if you dont abide by it when u import the cars...they become illegal:bthumbup:

mx73someday
Customs wouldn't release a car to you if you just wanted to store it at your house. It would sit at the port until time runs out at which time they'd seize it and scrap it.

Cars imported under the race-only rule can NEVER be registered for the road according to the legislation, even if they become 15 years old.

dsl55
So if guys are running around with ILLEGAL IMPORTS or were, why couldnt you just illegal import one now and then store it? If these guys can get past customs and then go on to do insurance fraud, why couldnt he get it past customs and store it?

SilverNeonRacer
not like I'm going to.. would be nice... but... it was just a question.

Nightstalker
someone please make a sticky about this shit so we don't have to answer the same question 5000 times for people that are to lazy to find out on there own.

Mustard
it's not the registering thats illegal.. it's the importing

You can register and insure anything you want... they don't care.
Don't belive me, call up your insurance company and tell them you have a 1999 nissan from japan, and you want to insure it.
They will say, bring us a passed inspection check and your done.

Getting a car through the customs that is younger than 15y/o is what is illegal.
It's an old law, but you know what, your just gonna have to deal with it.
The law is around to protect markets and discourage globalization.
