| hey, whats up with parts prices so high - Click HERE for Original Thread |

So I have owned my subaru legacy since january, and i am already fed up with the friggin thing. Not that there's anything wrong with it, as an automobile, but i simply CAN'T GET PARTS AT ANY REASONABLE COST. I bought it used from the southside dealership, and 2 weeks later the rear end was bouncing uncontrollably. I thought "well, that certainly sucks, i just got this thing and it already needs work, better get some struts". So I goes to the local parts stores, and they all give me the "i don't have a prt number for that" canned reply. So then I goes to the dealership, and asks them how much... "$333.65 EACH" He tells me. "fuck you" i tells him. they eventually gave them to me for free.
Now, I have a need to replace one or more fuel injectors on this car because it's obvious that one's plugged or failing. Once again, I goes to the local parts stores, and once again theys laugh at me. I checked on all the local forums... nothing. SO for kicks, i thought to myself"self, maybe those struts were just a fluke, and the other parts are less exotic so call 'em". Well, i was not rewarded for my optimism. the guy on the phone says "$275 EACH, BEND OVER ASSHOLE". Well, I might have gotten the quoted text wrong, but everything up to the actual price is correct, then i just kinda tuned out from shock. Im sure that's what he said, or at least what he was thinking.
Is this legal? those prices must be bordering on extortion! I mean, if that was my only car, and i was stranded without those parts, i woudl be extremely upset, as well as poor since I would have to apply for a loan jsut to fix the car. they have a monopoly on available parts, and they are making the most out of my dire situation. I am sure that there are other hapless subaru owners around the city whose warranties are expired, and who are finding extremely high costs to keep the damn things on the road.
I wondered why i was seeing seemingly good subarus showing up at the junkyards, no I know the reast of the story... the owners couln't afford to keep the cars running, so they junked them, since they can't sell it to anyone but their enemies for any price.
Well, that's my rant for the day... now Ill go on eghey and see what kind of shipping rape and delays i am gonna have to endure to get this bastard off its knock sensor.

| No offense - but you should have done your research beforehand. Any car is going to need normal maintenance (Such as shocks, springs, etc...). |

The car manufacturers have patents (or trademarks or copyright or whatever) on the parts in their cars. They are proprietary, until they decide to "release them" to the jobber market. Then, and only then, can parts stores get their hands on them. Until then, you can only get the parts at the dealerships. That's why the parts stores told you they "don't have a part number on that".
A lot of times, it's so expensive to get a new car to market, that sales of the car itself don't pay for the R & D, especially in small car companies like Subaru. So they hang onto the parts sales to finish recovering their costs.
Unfortunately, you got caught up in the middle of it. I know this doesn't make you feel any better about buying a Subaru, but at least now you know why. |

| that is why i drive a civic... when something breaks i have a gazillion choices for parts |

That's why when something breaks it cheaper to replace it with performance parts as oppose to stock parts :p And it's like that for any part from the dealership be it Honda, Toyota or Subaru.

Sure, if you don't mind buying your parts at a junk yard.
If you want cheap parts, buy a domestic. Japanese parts are plated in gold. You're going to have to get used to insanely expensive parts. Esspecially for a Subaru. |

| Stupid parts prices is one of the main reasons I sold my otherwise perfect '95 Tercel. That and it was too small for a family vehicle. Anyway, this is why I won't be buying Japanese for quite some time. My domestics WILL break down, but at least I'll be able to aford to fix them. |

there are plenty of domestic and import parts, but theres alot more domestics then imports which is why their cheaper. on the other have a guy at hondatoy was asking me to bend over and give him 350$ for a new transmission, my mistake, old and probably junked transmission. and for the swap id probably need another 500$ worth of parts, those guys are just there to entertain honda owners that ask them for quotes. assholes want 600$ and a freakin blow job for an automatic transmission. well mainly the 600$, but they wanted the head as a 'throw in'. damn, 600$ is pretty damn close to what i paid for my accord.
i actually emailed them asking why their transmissions for the older accords were so much more then newer civics and accords and stuff

Simple......
Supply and Demand.....
If I accumulate too many tranys for a model car that is still covered under warranty, chances are, so to, have my competitors. When this car gets old enough that it is no longer covered by warranty, we all want to have the best price on the transmission or what ever part it is that we have too many of...... Supply has exceeded demand....... Once our stocks start to run out, some times we realize that there will be more demand for some parts than we had anticipated, so the price starts to climb as demand exceeds supply. Some times the demand never really does catch up to supply.... the prices stay low until we are forced to start scrapping good tranys or whatever...... Most of us are using computers to track our requests and sales and adjusting the price accordingly.... That said sometimes we have just missed making a needed adjustment to pricing......
This is just such a case, I have not reviewed this pricing for some time, as I have not been buying many Accords from this vintage......
Dave.

still, 350$ for a transmission for an accord which is worth close to nothing, i have nothing againest them, they are a business and need to make profits as well. but as sparkycivic said, their just bordering on extortion. since this is my only car chances are id have to haul it over to pick and pull, and do the most dreaded thing i ever though possible, go and yank out a new transmission for my car, all on my own... |

i bought it because it was really fun to drive... and i had no other car at the time cause my civic got written off. My festiva is getting me around for now, but my friend is depending on my subaru cause hers is still waiting for shocks, and that one just got a used transmission She actually likes mine better than hers because it's standard, and it fits all three of her kids' seats in the back. There's a break in my story--- she found struts for her 99 subaru for only 110 bux ea at some parts store, when she was quoted $320 from the dealership. they should be arriving from a SK depot as I type this. they didn't have injectors for me, though :(. so I'll be able to park my wagon later this week, and, of course, continue driving my vibrating, oscillating, stock bass-thumbing fastiva
"when I get some money..." Im gonna have the best civic in town!!:drama: i have an EF sitting on jackstands, waiting for a transmission, and wiring/fabrication of mounts. then I will be happy again. |

Hi Auke,
Talk to Hugh and Harv at Autorola on Whyte. Accross from Sun Toyota. They may be able to hook you up with some parts.
Also for the injectors buy this stuff called Liqui Moly Jector. It is about $11 or $12.00 for a 300 ml can,but it is the best stuff that I have bought in my life for injector cleaner. It is made in Germany at literally works with in 10 min.
It is only avaliable at Autorolla and works like a charm.
Please take a look at the review I wrote on the supraclub website.

Tell them the Mike the one with the Red Supra sent you.
Hope this helps.

| Send the injectors out to someplace like RC Engineering; they can rebuild them for you, i'm assuming a fair bit cheaper than new ones would be. What year is your Legacy? |

| Check to see if Subaru used those injectors in other models. Because Subaru had such a limited model line, they often use the same parts through many of their products. You may be able to find a used set cheap. |
