night_font
hah, A lifetime supply of bus passes, good one. maybe you could consider a MK2 (82-86) supra, not to fast and nice looking hah. and use the money you save for mods.

Supra_devil
an 80's honda, great on gas, lots of parts at yards if need be, cheap to get tires for. fun to drive, lots of cargo space(i had an accord hatchback)

Heh ya my vote goes towards the MK2. If you can dish out some extra cash, then i would suggest the MK3. I would have suggested a 80s Corolla GT-S, but stupid initial d tax came in.

all yer gonna get for "advice" here is different people opinions about different cars, and it will more then likely flame when someone says you should buy a car someone else think's is shit...

better plan:

Step one) Goto www.canadatrader.com
Step Two) Search in Edmonton and area for Cars
Step Three) Set Max price to $5000
Step Four) Look at options.. and repeat as nesecary

If you find something you like, then maybe visit a forum dedicated to that car... i garuntee you will find one.
Those people will know the car best... look to see if there are common problems that owners run into... yadda yadaa....

have fun! :)

DomesticDrifter

The Bargain Finder and Auto Trader (under $5000) come out every Thursday. Drfinitely a must if you're looking for a car.

The only other 4 banger that does very well to mods is the SR20.:fingersx: :D

2ndgenlude
88-91 prelude
decent DOHC B20 engine
lightweight, fun to drive. some even came in 4ws.
should find a nice one in that price range.

ChromeDragon
Z31 Nissan 300zx Turbo. Can be had easily within your price range and are capable of 13s with less than $1k in mods.

this is the other thing i knew was gonna happen :p

7 of the 10 people who made suggestions for cars, OWNED the cars they suggested...
you can't deny the biasness in those kinds of responses, i would imidiatly disregard them :p
The ones that made suggestions of cars they didn't own, did so probaly cause the cars they DO own would run more then $5000.

just something to think about...

i know i know.. i'm being a jerk. :D

turbo_dave
hmmm.. since v8's are out the question i would say anything with a turbo. Turbo mopars can be picked up cheap and can be made fast; out of the box they're not really that great. However, throw in a manual boost controler along with some supporting mods like exhaust and it's a different story. A wealth of information is avaliable on the net and there are many fast turbo mopars even in edmonton. Plus, you can pretty much find hundreds of parts cars at pick n' pull :)

If you wanna go the turbo mopar route get one equiped with the turbo II as they already come intercooled and i beleive have a more efficient head and better turbo ( a little rusty on turbo mopars tho :) )

superspeed
