Yup... my lil 2.3L turbo diesel, new Head $1000, new short block $2000, new Diesel injector pump $2800.

Hense why i don't have a buncha new wngine parts for it. Still need to work on it to see why it doesn't run. Head looked fine, block looks fine...new head gasket, and she still doesn't fire up. grrr.

I love how diesels work no sparkplugs just compression.

Speaking of which. Do newer FI diesels require glow plugs, or does simple compression get the job done while you're turning it over?

SilverZ24
Ford and GM are still using glow plugs for sure. Don't know about anyone else.

SilverNeonRacer
The newer Dodge's use an intake air heater. Mine uses glows and a fuel heater.

They still need the glow plugs. Until the cylinders heat up from the first few seconds of running, the compression alone dosen't heat up the fuel enough to support combustion. It can be done by not waiting for the glow plugs to cycle through, but you end up having to crank the engine over longer and you get a big puff of smoke once it gets going.

I understand what glow plugs do. It's just been a very long time since I've driven a diesel. Even then, most of it was on a tractor. :)
