My little review of the Mazda Cosmo - Click HERE for Original Thread

REFLUX
Alright I don't really consider myself a person who's been exposed to a large variety of high powered vehicles but it's hard to miss quality & sheer oomph when it hits you in the face....or the back of the seat in this scenario.

Earlier today I dropped by Fulblown Motorsports & they got a dark blue with tan leather interior Cosmo sitting in the lot.

Josh offers to take me for a spin in it & we're off.

The power delivery is just astounding! The linearity of it all felt like it was a massive Normally Aspirated engine. It just kept on going and going and going, never did it seem like it was slowing down.
Watching the speedometer climb up like it's a tach is the only indication of just how much punch this beast has.
Inside, the cockpit is stealthy quiet, it has a comfortable suspension (comparable to that of a Lexus SUV) and feels extremely stable at speeds.

Just experiencing the engine was only 1/2 of it for me.
The rest of the goodies were found inside.

Remember, this is a Mazda made in 1990.
Amongst the list of over the top amenities are:
-a Television which picks up local channels
-an air purifier
-factory 12 disc CD changer
-touch screen monitor (doubles as the TV)
-temp, cruise & assorted controls found on the steering wheel
-automatic tilting steering wheel when the key is removed
-automatic up & down driver side window
-power everything (even folding side mirrors)
-GPS

Honestly, when you put it on paper, this car is on par with practically every luxury car made in 2005.
Then you have to think back again...this was produced 15 years ago by Mazda.
Not some luxury division of Mazda like Lexus of Toyota or Infiniti of Nissan and not a luxury only automaker like BMW/Benz/Jag.

For the price, you get one helluva car.
You get power, an over abundance of luxury items (who the hell has heard of an AIR PURIFIER in a car???), North American rarity, comfy ride, subtle good looks that don't scream "Steal Me NOW!" and technology that was released over a decade too early.

After all that I can only think of a few down sides (some may not consider them to be though):
-It still is a 15 year old car (no warranty, normal wear & tear)
-RHD on LHD roads (takes some getting used to but do-able from what I hear)
-Rotaries scare people
-Rare car = expensive parts (i.e. body panels)
-High HP/TQ + RWD + heavy foot = purchasing of body panels in winter

Actually after putting all this down I've come to one conclusion:

Don't buy the car.
It really isn't for you.
It's for me. ;)

turbo_dave
they run the quarter in the 15s right?

Adam
I've never heard of this kind of car...pictures??

turbo_dave
cancel that... low 14s... nice sleeper :) reminds me of the Lexus SC/ Toyota Soarer

Yeah i was at Fulblown today as well the car is amazing love the 20B not to mention the looks

DomesticDrifter
I was there today too, good thing Josh has a radar detector in the Cosmo because with that much power hes gonna need it! The M3 they have for sale is nice too, only down side is its an auto.

Anyway bump for a good guy with awesome pricing:bthumbup:

Every VW on the market, for a few years now.

Anyway, I've been kind of interested/scared of the Cosmo since I first heard about it in GT (yes, I too started my enthusiast life with playstation). Damn cool car. I imagine it goes through gas worse than a HEMI, but really, how often would you even drive something like this?

A dedicated air purifier?
I don't mean a filtering system built into the vent system, the Cosmo actually has a little contraption in the back that sucks air in & blows it back out.

Never heard of VW having an air purifier, if it's true, that is totally cool!

But yeah, I'd be scared of its gas mileage :D

oldraven
Well, they all come with pollen filters, (which is what I was thinking about), but it turns out VW sells ionizer air purifiers as accessories.

Purify and eliminate tiny particles that float in the air. Circulates clean air electronically with no fan, no motor and no noise. Ionizer comes with USB cable and 12V adapter for your car. Screened Volkswagen logo. Aluminum.

ahh that's cool
a little different from what the Cosmo has but neat nonetheless :)

What do you like better about it? THe unpainted kit? The blackenss(what is that? shit from the exhaust? burn? dirt?) around the unpainted kit where the exhaust exits. The decals that have words spelt wrong?

1.hmmm lets start off with frist its twin sequenial turbo! unlike the NA one metioned above!
2.that kit is a RE-Amemiya (two tone paint sceme!) vs. the stock body above
3.the carbon from the side pipes, mean this car is obiviously not stock and has over 400hp
4.the amount of JDM decals on the car, make your car look domestic!
ummmm and who would have thaught that maybe not all the japanese ppl can spell english

1. Looks like you were wrong.
2.it doesn't look two-tone, it looks one tone painted one tone unpainted or grey.
3.yay for it, perhaps cleaning?
4. the amount of jdm decals makes my car looks domestic...HAVE YOU LOOKED IN MY RIDES SECTION? That makes no sense. And what is so special about a jdm decal? is it right side only?

ummm it's from japan, it's written by the japanese, why is it even in english? I don't write in japanese :dunno:

Thanks for coming out.

Btw, if fulblowns cosmo looks like the very first pic posted, that is one sweet ride!

qualthar
"my penis is bigger than yours"

They're both nice cars in their own way. Reflux was just reviewing the Cosmo that he had a ride in, not starting a pissing contest. Come on guys, grow up already

redbaron303
This thread is kinda funny... LOL

Nice review Terry.

dsl55
I pointed out flaws in the car you displayed. The cosmo is not mine, and it's twin sequential like your friends, is it not? So I won't be having fun in my non existant cosmo, but I'm sure it's owner will, as reflux gave a stunnign review.

I'm not hiding behind my computer, I merely talked about that cosmo you showed. There's no need to get all upset about that. We're both adults.

sil_eighty
ok maybe u should review your post there kiddo........
i displayed that cosmo becasue there arent a whole lot of them around, and i was adding to the post ...(theres another one in edmonton)

first thing u did was pick it apart..because?????
oh and the guys been my best freind since grade 8:bthumbup:

dsl55
I never questioned your friendship... And I don't see anything in my post that needs reviewing :dunno: I was very clear, I used proper grammar...

The cosmo has a 20B right? That's a three rotor right?

Oh really?
Damn, thought this was the first Cosmo to arrive in Edmonton!

And thnx for the compliments of the review, it really doesn't do the car justice though :D

dsl55
If fulblowns is as nice as the pic you showed reflux, it looks good enough to be a 2005...

REFLUX
^^^
I didn't post the pic but Fulblown's Cosmo was dirty so it was hard to tell exactly how mint it is.

I'd have to say it is at least in Very Good condition.
Interior has normal signs of wear.

dsl55
Oh my bad, but it looks very modern.

ChromeDragon
Terry.........shuuuuuuuuutuuuuuupppp!

Nobody is supposed to know about these......:p

TyPhOOnSliPPerY
Cosmo is such a nice car .....the acceleration is soo smooth on the car and the looks are soo modern compared to its age. I have wanted one of these for soo many years and it has lived up to its expectations since I have gotten it. As for the comments I could care less what people think of it as I thin kthe side exhaust and kit make the car unique

That has to be one of the funniest things I have read. Now every dumbass on the street with an unpainted kit is going to say they have a two tone paint sceme. lol That car would look a hundred times better solid blue IMO. And it looks like the kit has been like that a long time because there are tons of rock chips and scratches on the front bumper.

Oh, and I have lots of carbon coming out of my tip, so my Cavalier must have over 400hp. :D

But joking aside, I love that car and agree it was way ahead of its time. I think I will have to stop by Fullblown to take a look.

BLK_LBL
heh, that black cosmo has the same ugly BBS wheels as i have on my 7

turbo_dave
there is no suh thing as an ugly BBS rim. :)

COSMO PICS

Here is the COSMO's first CANADIAN ROAD TRIP.

We picked her up in Van, and drove her threw the mountains.... and what a drive it was.

Best 2 day vacation that involved 14 hours of driving, ever!

ENJOY!

BLK_LBL
obviously havent seen my BBS wheels and low-performance 205/60/15 all seasons.

Lightweights :)

The 20B goes better in the FD, too :P

All joking aside, looks like a very nice ride. Hmm... a cosmo in the collection? I thought about picking up that kitted up one when IC was selling it.

Are you planning on doing any sorts of motor sports with the cosmo? Thought at all about what you'd use for management? Seems that tossing the sequential and going single snail makes for cleaner tuning.

Its FOR SALE!

I have too many vehicles as it is!

So buy it and do as you wish, but truthfully, this is the ULTIMATE daily driver... AS IS!
