how far up the temp gauge is overheating? - Click HERE for Original Thread

newaccorddriver
like the topic states.

my transmission is slipping pretty badly and after it slips my engine revs up really high. as a result when i look at my temperature gauge it is almost near the top so id have to turn my heater on full just to prevent it from overheating. but how far up the gauge is overheating?

mr_sars
The needle should always sit just a little below the middle point for a normal car. Anything above that and I'd be suspecting that something is wrong.

:dunno: I had the same problem a couple months ago and all I did was replace my thermostat. I think I paid about $25 for it or something stupid, but its not whole lot to dish out to just change a thermostat.

Just go to any dealership and ask for a thermostat and gasket. Replacing it is stupidly easy and if you have some sort of repair manual you can do it in less than half an hour.

newaccorddriver
its not the thermostat, its the fact that when my transmission slips my engine is revving alot more and causes the heat to go up. if the transmission doesnt slip the temp stays the same

manual or autocrapic?

newaccorddriver
autocrappy, when it slips alot and often thats when it rises up

i bet that the tranny cooler is either really close to the rad, or integrated(my festiva is integrated-hoses all go to the same rad). It is likely that the tranny slipping is causing the oil to reach high temperatures, and the heat is being transeferred to the engine water through the radiator, thus the temperature spike shown on the engine temp gauge. My advice: get a tranny from a wrecker, or as a matter of fact, i think there's an auto for sale on here somewhere for very cheap, and then install your own "towing package" to add safety to the tranny for future needs. when I say "towing package", I mean spending 50 bucks on a nice new oil cooler from your local u-haul dealer, and ditch the shared system. just make sure to install it BEHIND the engine radiator somehow, otherwise the tranny might freeze up in winter with too cold oil, or source of heat to keep some warmth in it. -- or use cardboard in the winter :D

auto trannies are not worth fixing unless they are rare, or from very expensive cars.

i was thinking something more like a 5 speed swap

best of luck....

thanks, just need either hondacrazy to respond with what he has or a diagram of what i need for the conversion, then i can head down to pick n pull or karbashers when i find it and get all the nessecary parts
