Hey Jim,
I'm new to the forum, actually only joined because I noticed this sub-form regarding chatting with Law enforcement.. Must start with saying that it's very awesome of you to give your time and make yourself available for questions..
Now for my question.. is it illegal to warn oncoming vehicles of a speed trap?? That's the general question.. I'd be happy to relay the whole story once I get that answered =]
thank you!

| Yes it is. 6 demerit points and a fine, I believe. It is considered stunting. |

Don't worry, we welcome people from everywhere, so welcome to the boards...
But yeah, I recall a story on the news during the summer how 3 kids got charged with stunting while holding a sign warning oncoming traffic of the photo radar van...
Ridiculous.
If you ask me, those photo anything devices cause more problems then they solve. (Vans, Redlight camers, etc.) |

| It is a serious offense. I never do it. You just never know who is ahead of you. |

Does anybody know of somebody who has fought a ticket for this offence? I don't understand fow it be seen as stunting either.

You're distracting other drivers and basically drawing attention to yourself...
IMO, if you can't handle 2 or 3 distractions while driving, you shouldn't be driving. Not continuous of course... |

| A bright flash in a person's rear view mirror, or keeping an eye out for parked idling vans is a greater distraction. |

| My point exactly, especially at night, I always though Photo radar was not allowed to run at night or low light... guess I was wrong. |

| Photo radar should not be out after sundown.. its against the rules I think.. here is a good example why.. I was driving past bonne doon mall going south.. its 50 there and they have a truck there pretty often.. but aimed north.. its getting dusky.. I am just driving along all of a sudden (just before I get to the pedestrian cross walk) FLASH.. and for about a second or 2 I am totally blind.. I have seen old ladies cross there without pressing the button.. what if one of them was walking out.. the photo buggy flashes me.. and I leave a tread line across some 90 year olds neck.. Think about that one.. damn photo radar.. |

Unfortunatly it will take an incident like the one you described for any change to be considered. |

ive seen photo radar out at 1 45 am.
now, im tempted to ask why photo is out at that time of the night, in the area (end of whyte where it curves north towards groat), but obviously, the person in the van felt it was a good place to stop and get a good relaxing read of their playboy.
yeah, i walked up to the van and took a look, i think it was the october edition, although i could only barely see the front cover.
so, being bored and having time to kill, i waited around.
this photo van, so carefully tucked in the bushes where you couldnt see it, didnt flash but once for 20 minutes.
i dont know how much the people who sit in those vans get paid, but sign me up. :D chilling out, reading a playboy and getting paid for it, golly, i want into that racket.
also, i thought photoradar had to be parked someplace visible with signs posted???
jim, do know know the rules on this, and should we be complaining when we see crap like this going on, or will we simply be ignored? |

Hey guys,
The only reason I brought this question up is because one day when I was feeling particulary bitter towards speeding tickets (on my way home from paying 2-3) I noticed a few police offers had set up a speed trap.. I was on my motorcycle so primarily I just decided I'd have some fun and flash my headlight and oncoming traffic to warn them of the cops..
Then I thought I'd get smart.. I turned around went back down the street again just to flash my head lights.. Still no reaction from the local law enforcement.. So THEN I stopped a block ahead of the speed trap.. got OFF the motorcycle and stood on the side of the street slowing ppl down with hand gestures warning of speed trap ahead.. I did this for about 2 minutes until a female police officer shows up in her cruiser.. Tells me to take off my helmet and gloves and straps on the cuffs.. Reads me my rights and tells me that I'm being arrested for "obstruction of a peace officer" She then proceeds to "manhandle" me into the back of the cruiser..
Basically I ended up getting three or four lectures from 2-3 different cops on how what I was doing was illegal and I'm going to be going to jail etc . etc.. But then they decided to let me go..?? My question is.. by slowing people down, if the police arent out there to make money, aren't I helping them?? Also I doubt that case woulda standed a chance in court.. But maybe the law enforcement officers on this board could clear it up??
thanks

| the police don't run the vans though hey... they're comissioned by the police and don't pick spots out of random they're actually targeted areas where the police know speeding may be a problem. They're out there to get people to slow down but how many of you slow down.. take a few quick breaths and then speed up again? I know I sure used to but what's your hurry in the city unless you're late for work or something is there really a good reason to speed unless you're bleeding to death or your wife's amniotic sac burst open all over your leather seats?... The only way you're gonna learn to slow down is getting slapped with photo radar and laser radar tickets... it's the only way I learned.... the best way is the hard way. They're also supposed to have a sign in front/behind a vehicle warning people that there is photo radar in that location... can't remember the distance before the radar location that the warning must be posted but I think it was in ummm Ontario that they got rid of the vans.. mind you they also have lower insurance rates and no god damn blood sucking ambulance chasers (accident injury lawyer)s is a good word they use... I call em leeches. We'd be better off w/o them oh no i got hit at 15 k.m from behind and now I can't work for 4 weeks... B.S  |

ive got nooooooo problem with photo, in fact if im going to speed, id much rather it be photo that takes my money, and yeah, if i get flashed, i do slow down.
normally i drive 8-10 kph over the limit, which i know is still speeding, but it also helps me make the lights in some places, eg: downtown, where 10 kph over the limit makes your trip from 124th street to 100th street about 20 minutes faster due to no red lights.
not saying its right, but simply saying i can justify it in my own head.
my comment was more geared towards the abuse of the photo radar system, as it is meant to slow people down, but it doesnt really make much effect unless people know they got hit, and if that doesnt happen until a week later... well a lot can happen in a week.
enforcement by threat is usually much more effective than enforcement by delayed punishment. |
