No thats Sony that was talking about shipping without the HD. They need to compete with MS $300 (usd) price tag.
I will own a 360 if only for Halo3. I'm addicted to Halo2 on Live. |

lol, 90% of current games are under 3GB. PS3 is gettin a blu-ray to help Sony win the HD-media race, not because games need more space.
I'm goin with x360 cause my HDTV needs some love. Also the launch line-up is sick(bolded the bad-ass games):
The Darkness
Tony Hawk's American Wasteland
Quake 4
DEAD OR ALIVE 4
Project Gotham Racing 3
Perfect Dark Zero
Madden NFL 06
Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter
Call of Duty 2
Amped 3
Condemned: Criminal Origins
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
FINAL FANTASY XI
Full Auto
Gun
Kameo: Elements of Power
NBA 2K6
NHL 2K6
The Outfit
Ridge Racer 6
Saint's Row
Top Spin 2
Then they have crazy shit like Gears of War coming out in early 2006, this should help ease those winter blues. |

The Launch Line-up is a kind-of fake...
it looks good until you read on and find out that the term "Launch" by microsoft, has be redifined from "out when the system is out" to "out within 2 months of the systems relase"
you can be damn sure many of those will be out after christmas.
360's will be rare at launch btw... the whole global release date made things BAD... i heard something like 5 pre-orders only at certian shops... even the big ones :( |

you mean the 4 weeks between Nov 22 and Dec 25? That's the launch window.
Some of those games might pushed back but most are confirmed for launch.
For me COD2, Oblivion, Kameo and PGR3 are great and are all confirmed for launch o rearly december, Condemned looks like a blast but I'll probably just rent that, PD0 looks like it plays alot like Goldeneye but I'll wait on the reviews.
NBA 2K6 is also looking sick, and next gent NHL 2K6 should be pretty nice. So all in all, there's a bunch of games to buy, too many actually.
And futureshop is offering 50 pre-orders a day on their website. |

2 months, 1 month.... whatever, the point is... they arn't true launch titles, and i won't budge on them being stupid about this.
the internet agrees.
regardless i'm acctually kinda excited myself, don't worry, i'm not dissing the system or anything like that.
I, however, will wait and see if the pre-orders acctually show up, and more importantly, wait til i get my 400 Ralph Bucks to purchase it anyways... i have exams to pass around that time anyways. |

IMO if the games are 2-3 weeks apart it's basically a total non-issue. If it was 2 months that's a whole different story. And regradless on your opinion there, MS has not released an official launch lineup, so I'm not sure what you think is stupid.
This is because most games are currently going through certification, and they may or may not make day 1, the official launch list will be available soon enough.
They're not being stupid at all, name one console that announced it Day 1 complete launch lineup over a month before launch, it doesn't happen, launches are messy.
Would you prefer they rush the games to make some arbitrary date on the calendar? |

Wow thats great! Care to point out where I said it was because games need more space? Its not just for the media race. You can also stream from the BR disk, which is a bonus. And the extra space will help. Also I don't have to go out and buy a BR player for god knows how much money.
I may pick up a 360 after seeing and reading about Oblivion, PGR3 and Condemed. PD0 doesn't look to immpresive IMO. Condemed should be the sleeper hit of launch titles. |

I would LOVE to see half those games in the month after launch....
i would LOVE it...
but you're right, launches are messy, i'd be surprised to see 5 games the day the system is out and i'd be astonished if there were 10 games come chrstimas time.
You're also reading me wrong... i'm excited, don't make me the enemy here ;)
I just don't like hype... it pisses me off, you get people's hopes up only to dissapoint them.
I work in a Video game store... i get people coming in DAILY saying they are going to buy blah blah blah the day it comes out, and i remember seeing the SAME PEOPLE 4 years back saying the same thing about the Xbox and Ps2... only to be utterly dissapointed with final launch titles waiting 4 months for the games they wanted to play in the first place. :( |

How am I supposed to read your mind? You simply said it would not be worth buyign a next-gen console without BR/HD-DVD, and that's a ridulous comment, since it's a GAME MACHINE and as I pointed out, games do not even take up half of current disc space.
Now, if you had said "It would be a wast of money BECAUSE I want to primarily use it as a HD movie player" then you might have a point to bitch, but you didn't.
Also, IMO, it might very well be a waste of money to buy a untested, possibly sketchy first generation BR drive as your HD movie player, may be a much better investment to buy a standalone player that will last. Especially considering it will be $500-600 CAD, that's an expensive gamble, and both PS2 and XBOX left a sour taste in my mouth as far as reliable movie players.
I own a HDTV and I will definately consider PS3, talk about killing two birds with one stone, however if I can pickup a standalone HD movie player next year for <$300 I will do that in a hjearbeat, then pick up a PS3 in 2007 or 2008 when it has dropped in price.
p.s. You do realize that data can be streamed from DVD right? And that if PS3 has anything less than a 4x BR drive it will actually be slower than a 12x DVD drive...I'll let you decide how likely it is that Sony packs in a 4x BR drive in a $400-500 USD console.
Maybe you referring to data redudancy? The extra space of BR lets dev's duplicate files throughout the disc which help decrease load times....however it still may very well be slower than just using a regular DVD. |

within week we should get 2 more...
Dead or Alive 4
King Kong
AND THATS IT FOR 2005!!!
Scooby's original list had 22
We get 16...
Ok so, thats not bad i'll admit...
REALLY
until you look a little closer
6 of the games are sports games (maybe 7 if you count amped)... more then 1/3rd, almost one half of the games!
not only that of that 1/3rd... 2 are basketball!
But it's worse then that, only 5!!! FIVE!!! of the 16 games are "brand new", the rest have already been released, or will be released shortly on older gen systems.
Now in the case of sports games, i've learned people are idiots, and they buy the latest rehash of the same game every year as soon as it comes out... so they probably own a good chunk of the games.
The worst part of it all!!!
I'll probably be buying one!!
and i know i'll be dissapointed if it wasnt for PGR3 or DOA4... which they delayed... *sigh* |

"I would LOVE to see half those games in the month after launch....
i would LOVE it..."
So instead of half, you get 3/4's and you're complaining!??!?
The lack of a solid RPG sucks, Oblivion being pushed back is a big blow.
But it's still a sick launch, Kameo just got an 8.7 at gamespot. I'll be picking up PD0, Kameo and NHL 2K6 for sure.
Then there's COD2 (fucking amazing game), PGR3, Condemned, Madden 06, and Tiger Woods 06 vying for 4th spot.
Finally after all this time, my HDTV will get a work out, can't wait!
p.s. I just noticed your comments about sports games and people being idiots. Not to be rude, but do you have any idea how ignorant that is? No-one is an 'idiot' for wanting to play their favourite genre with next-gen GFX. And for any sports fan having updated rosters and stats is very important, and we don't want to sit around for 4 hours updating stats.
Also, sports games continually improve which is why sales keep increasing, it's not because gamers are idiots, it's because they keep imrpoving the gameplay and features. If they churned out the same old game every year (which they do sometimes) sales suffer. |

scooby, it seems we will never see eye to eye... and i've decided i'm ok with that... :P
i did admit, that the launch numbers were a lot more impressive then i anticipated... my ignorance there was not an issue :P
the problem i had, was not even LOOKING at the launch titles, and only the numbers... which most other probably did.
My sports game issue still stands, however, ESPECIALLY with EA.
Updated rosters are the PRIMARY reason they release a new game every year... secondary advantages is they get to try new stuff that people usually hate or whatever...
With Xbox Live, things should have changed.. but it didn't... you now have a way to spread updated roster data almost instantly to 100's upon 1000's of gamers. But they never did... they just get pump'n out the maddens
In Japan, Anyone who knows Winning Eleven (or even here) know that they've had online roster updates for a number of years... the only problem THEY had was they couldn't get the licenses for all the teams cause stupid EA had them all.
So the roster updates were for Japanese teams only.. but still it worked.
The game was only re-released on a bi-annual bases, and it's worked well.
I dunno, i've always been frustrated with major sports titles... people came in for a while asking which hockey to buy this year.. and the only advice i had, was to choose the one you liked last year... cause they are very similar with some of the stuff from last year missin, and new stuff that will be missing next year :P
As for graphics... the only REAL adjustment is framerate... and maybe some smoother textures (mainly cause of high res)
Next year, that'll be an issue... but not this gen...
And thnkfully i know this is true, because i'm sure they've already got the next 2 years of Madden ready :)
I shouldn't really compain though, sports games account for a lot of our sales... and probably keep us a afloat :P One thing we can always count on, is a stupidly busy rush when madden comes out each year :P
THAT ASIDE:
the sports games are only a few of the ported titles...
GUN, Call of duty 2, NFS, Quake 4... they are all already out. you see my issue? |
|
|
| scooby_dooby |
I totally see your issue, cross generational ports are pretty gay.
However, I do there's a good selection of games you can't get on other systems(except $2000+ PC's):
Kameo
PD0
PGR3
Condemned
COD2
DOA4
COD2 and Condemned are both on PC(well they wil be eventually), but to play at those settings you need a $500+ gfx card, and even with that you don't get surround sound, big screen, or the comfort of your couch.
That's pretty solid for launch, and alot of the other titles are good regardless of whether they're on other consoles, like King-Kong, that game rocks and the X360 version is a whole new game(graphically) made by a different team (hint: it looks sexy!) Madden 06 is also a whole new footbal game, everything from stadiums to crowds, to animations, it's not the same game as on the XBOX.
Anywyas, enough of that, do you have one pre-ordered? WHat're your plans for launch day? |
|
|
| Mustard |
agreed...
though i'd take amouse and keyboard for COD, over the large screen anyday Surround sound, i do have on the PC :P
regardless...
one of the guys with a bit more money at our store is buying one, and he'll be bringing it over... i imagine Perfect Dark, or PGR3 will be the order until DOA4 come out.
I hope they arrive at our store early so we can take one home on the weekend, but i kinda doubt it.
Funny story
I was at school on thursday (NAIT) and i noticed a guy had hooked up a video game system to one of the public tv's in the "Naitrium" (relaxing area with couches and what not)
nothing new really, until i realized i couldn't recognize the game...
so i walked over, and to my surprise he was playing Kameo (!)
so i asked.... WTF?!
turns out he won one of the pepsi "play before any one else" systems... he didn't even enter a code from a pepsi though, he just entered in the no-purchase neccesary form online, and the bastard WON!
it looked pretty nice, (as nice as it could be on a crap TV of course), though the game didn't intrest me, really.
The system was significantly smaller then i expected, and the controllers were a lot more aroganomic then i had anticipated as well.
He had no other games, which was fine because i hated him anyways :P but it was kinda cool to see.
He had his ipod hooked up to the USB port on the front and was playing his Music in the game which i thought was kinda cool, and i saw the hard drive which was also smaller then i thought.
All in all, smaller then expected was the order of the day i think :) |
