Has anyone ever lived in a dormatory, or went to school somewhere away from their home town?

How was living? Was it expensive for food and such?

I have a decision to make here, if I should head off to Fairview Alberta, and reside at NAIT there to complete my education.

Or take something for the year being, and try to apply again for the same course at the Edmonton Campus, which is very, very, very competitive.

I can tell you that Fairview campus is great - 3 hole golf course, everything.

The downside is that I've yet to meet anyone who's been there who hasn't been bored out of their minds when they aren't working (Pretty much half our department has visited).

A lot of their dorm. units come with a kitchen, so you can cook all your own food. Other than that, prices in town seemed pretty much comparable to here.

Which program?

I am really considering going, as I do not want to waste my 1 year here taking soemthing that doesnt interest me, or upgrading, and not have a 100% chance of being accepted next year.

THe program is Power Engineering.

I thought we offer a distance learning option for Power Engineering where you can do it pretty much online (Except for testing) and get your 4th class?

Or were you looking for the experience that comes with the classroom setting? If so - I'd say head to Fairview. PE is a tough course to get into because of a huge demand, so there is no guarentee you'll get in next year....

You can get dorm rooms for ~$300/month with a shared kitchen, so the cost isn't great at all to live up there....

Is there really a online version? Trevor, could you please find out for me about this. Becaues that would save me alot of money.

I am not to worried about the clasroom environment, because I work better (get stuff done) on my own.

But yea 300/month, does not seem bad at all for living costs.

REFLUX
I was in London, Ontario for my first year of university.
Living in residence (including a large meal card) cost about $10k all said & done.
About $6k for housing & $4k for food card.

In general, when people talk about living on campus...it's the experience that is talked about the most.

Typically, if you want to have a good time, you should be pretty active in & around your campus.
There will always be the Thurs/Fri/Sat partying but if you aren't into that nor do anything extracurricular, it can be pretty damn boring.

It really depends on your personality type.
Some people do well being surrounded by people 24/7, some people need more of their own space.

Finding personal time when living in dorms is difficult (especially if you have room mates) so you'd have to go to a library or someplace remote & quiet to be left alone.

If you have any more questions, post away as I'm not sure what other information you'd like to have.

Yeah - Power Engineering is offered through CML, which does distance deliver. You don't get the classroom experience, which may help you get the job, but it's all the same 4th class certificate you get in the end.

Here's the link:
http://www.nait.ca/portal/server.pt...p;CalendarID=96

Hopefully that shows up right - the navigation is:
NAIT Home>PartTime Learning>Subject Areas>Distance & Online Learning and right at the bottom.

Power Engineering Computer Managed Learning (CML)
Contact Information
Power Engineering information - Phone: (780) 471-8595
CML information - Phone: (780) 471-7027 or (780) 471-7815

The only reason to take the inclass is for experience, Grant told me it makes you more marketable (Was inquiring for a friend) to your first employer....I keep thinking when you take the classes you need 6 months of experience after to actually get your ticket? Which is where he said the challenge is for the people who don't take the class (And why the class is a huge demand).

I wouldn't count on someone being there though in summer time - but you can call 378-5000 for info on registering or you can call the numbers above for actual info on the course/speak to the power engineering instructors (When they come back from vacation).

Thanks alot Trevor. Yea definitaly the classroom will land me a job quicker. But im sure I would be able to work something out where I could get them to be an intern or something to that nature.

I still think Fairview interests me, just being away from friends and my car is hard haha.

Fairview is a LONG way away from here.

We usually fly to grande prairie and rent a car from there....
