Sheet metal intakes vs. Stock intakes - Click HERE for Original Thread

BlueTurboEGG
I mena, how much potential can be unlocked by running a sheet metal intake?.<p>For cars with a long curved, or dual runners, etc can benefit from this, but is the cost really worth the HP? and are these things really streetable?.

CYA
question is too vague andy.  plenum size, intake runner length, and cross section are the main things which will determine it's intended usage.<p>seriously... when you asked how much potential can be unlocked... what were you looking for?  how about 200hp?  how about 2 seconds off your et?  you know it's not that simple.  lol.<p>cars with long(er) intakes don't necessarily always benefit from one of these be it sheet metal, composite whatever... it's all in the design and the characteristics above.  you know the basic principal of intake runner length and how it effects power output right?  if so you know what i'm getting at.  <!--emo&;)--><img src="http://www.asianet.ca/images/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'><!--endemo-->

1st gen Talon intakes are only good for around 500-550
hp@crank.
Thats why anybody that wants a OK time in a Talon gets a Hogan or Buchur intake.
The sheetmetal intakes allow the stage 4 heads to be used to they're potential.
If I remember correctly they had a built Talon running 20 psi with a big turbo and got 560 hp.
They put a Sheet Metal intake on it and got 610 @ 20 psi.
That wasn't the end either , now the intake temp dropped because the turbo wasn't so backed up so they turned the boost up and got 680 @ 25 psi.
Now thought they have cars running 35 psi.<p>Andy they are worth it if you have cams , stage 4 or more head , full ecu control , higher than stock rpm's and proper turbo sizing and intake system.

CYA
how can anyone say "they" are worth it if there is no particular intake that andy mentioned??  fact is you have no idea what design andy is talking about and what price tag it carries... so how can you say "they are worth it?"  if i had the time and welding capabilities i'd take full advantage of people who believe this sort of thing... i'd just make a box with some runners all out of sheet metal and sell it as some special intake.  and just because it's "sheet metal" people will think ooooh... this is what i need to make power!  come on... for all you know the intake has the EXACT same design as a stock intake but is made of sheet metal.  andy didn't say anything about which intake and what the application is.  not that if he answered that i could tell him if it's worth his time since i'm not a nissan guy.   but that is why i mentioned the characteristics he needs to consider when looking at the intake.

TALONV8KILLER
Well v8 boy.
There is only the tube or box style available and the runners are just bigger and shorter because front drive cars have a fire wall that limits shit.
It is taken for granted that 4 bangers rev higher so trying to play with tube length or size is not done much.
Just make the serge tank a higher volume based on engine size and boost and open and staighten the runners. Wella , your 4 banger manifold.
Just make sure there are reviews and proof for the brand you want.
In case you didn't know STR,VENOM are the same casting. Hogan and BG also look like they're the same.
We don't have to worry about what to buy because we only need to flow way more up top.<p>Oh ya my previous post was just a review I read from a site.<p>Obviously Andy wants more power and 4 bangers make it buy getting more air and high rev's so bigger is simply better in a turbo application applicable to him.<p>TO A POINT THOUGH!<p>

this coming from a guy who says he's going to buy a titanium crank for his talon.  PLEASE!  do you even have any clue as to how much that would cost?<!--emo&???--><img src="http://www.asianet.ca/images/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='???'><!--endemo-->  if you applied as much time bulsh!ting about things as actually reading and understanding how important these concepts are to building a good motor then maybe you wouldn't be calling so many people names and making yourself look stupid.  as for the name calling itself... keep that sh!t up.<p>on a more technical side... open the runners... just as simple as that huh?  yes you're right... intake runner volume and dimension on andy's head doesn't matter cause it's a 4 cylinder... they have high revs and because of that it defies all laws of physics.  wanna try again?

CYA
and you know what's really stupid? _so what if your 4 cylinder revs to 9000rpm? _by saying... "It is taken for granted that 4 bangers rev higher so trying to play with tube length or size is not done much." ... are you telling me nascar engines don't "play" with intake lengths and size either? _oh yeah... they rev higher so i guess they don't. _they simply open up the runners and shorten them. _"yes... this looks like a nice size... plus it fits with out current hood! _let's go with this intake then!!"<p>(Edited by CYA at 6:28 pm on Jan. 4, 2002)

Please refrain from Name calling guys, try to remember, when the dust settles, we're all on the same team here.<p>Each car can be tweaked to astounding performance, V8's, I-4's, V6's, etc.<p>I suppose I should have added more controls to my question.<p>I've often read that because of the shorter high velocity runners on a sheetmetal is ideal for a turbo car, and I seem to notice that all the fast cars, imports and V8's run some type of specialized intake S.M. or otherwise.<p>So if I took a stock intake, and a S.M. intake with the same inner diameter (for arguments sake and control purposes) made the runners shorter, would it make more power?, how about that?<p>Everybody wants more power, that's a given in any situation. My other question is  would this power delivery be streetable?.<p>Currently I have a few beefs with my car because of it's high maintanence, low slung exhaust,  and I haven't reached any acceptable wheel time to get to know the car better.<p>Funny how all these things disappear when I press the loud pedal to the floor...

<p>no you will not make more power... any gain would be marginal.  shorter runners move the powerband higher in rpm.<p>

Hey TALONV8KILLER<p>Back up your words, and show us the pictures of this amazing engine you've talking aboutl.

I think that was a typo. Weren't engines in 1978 revving closer to 1200?
