We got Pronger!! - Click HERE for Original Thread

DelSoln
So how do u guys like this trade?? Do u think the Oilers are better off with him?

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story.asp?id=132273

blown_mr2
Yay to the new CBA!!

He's the first real marque player we've seen here in a long time. He'll only make the team better. Sorry to see Brewer go, but I think most will agree that Pronger is the better defenceman today, and for the next few years.

Now if they can only land that Modano fellow!! :fingersx:

Jord@n
Pronger's a douche. I wish we didn't get him.

notaturbotalon
So now we have a defenseman that can score more goals than our forwards. It's time to stop dicking around and sign Forsberg already, if we could do that without losing too much we'd start to have a team. No big loss with Brewer, and Woywitka's a chump.

Are you kidding me?

Do you follow hockey at all? Pronger is exactly what the Oilers need at the blue line.

I'm glad we didn't get Modano. He's just getting worse and worse. Then there's Forsberg. What a fucking tool, all he does is dive. That's not what we need on our team.

Ok I'm not a forsberg fan but take your pick Lindros or Forsberg? Who do you think got the better deal? Flyers traded forsberg, recci, hextall + $$$ for lindros.

Yea he dives like no tomorrow here is a guy thats like a horse to knock off with the puck but without it even todd marchant can knock him down. But over all he is the most well rounded player in the NHL he can be gritty when he wants to and he can put the puck in the net he's got finess but most of all he's CONSISTANT!

Oilers have room in their salary to sign one free agent but not someone witha big salary b/c of the pronger trade. They still need to sign smyth, york and a bunch of restricted players in their roster.

I have a feeling the oilers might be going for Satan who became a unrestricted free agent with buffalo giving him a buy out. Don't forget there is Paul Kariya too. Kariya would be a good fit on the oilers team same goes for forsberg and satan. There is rumour also Havlet or Hossa from Ottawa might be available. There is no way unless Hossa, Havlet and Spezza take a major pay cut can sign with Ottawa and have them be under the 39 million mark.

I would like to see either one of these guys in an oiler uniform.
(Havlet, Hossa, Forsberg and Kariya) especially Hossa or Havlet b/c i'm an Ottawa fan.

And for a serious sleeper pick take a good look at Pheonix and the names on their roster.

PS Satan trade was the most retarded trade the oilers could have ever made.

ALIAS81
i love the move for Pronger... why?? Because Pronger brings the leadership that we have been lacking in the locker room. Jason Smith is a leader on the ice, but the locker room leadership has been lacking since the weight/guerin days...

On TSN, there is a team tracker of salaries, and with the Pronger deal we are just under 18 and a half million... doesnt leave much to sign 1 or 2 marquee players considering lowe wants to be in the 20-22 million dollar range...(heard it on either TSN or The Score)

if we could use the Pronger signing as bait to attract other players to come here and play, we might get solid forwards at a fraction of their salaries... Amonte at 1.8 million a year is a steal... and McCarty at 800,000... those are bang for buck signings...

Chris Pronger has never been a player I liked. He is rough, slow and doesn't seem like a team player. He always takes dumb penalties at the worst possible moment.

Chris Prongers 'To-Do' List:lol:

I just don't like the guy, sorry.

I dont think the oilers will have their payroll at 20-22M. Last year, the Oilers payroll was about 33M .... They'd be duping the fans if they kept it at 20-22M. I think they'll keep their payroll the same as last year and grab another one or two more FA's.

I'd like the Oilers to get Kariya though. he'd be an awesome fit for this team.

ae1969
Awesome deal.

Now if we could get kariya.

THAT WOULD give us enough depth in the front to be competitive.

ITs gonna be a great season.

Jord@n
Kariya would be sweet. If we can't afford him, dump Pronger for him.:p

ALIAS81
maybe i misheard him... maybe he meant 30-32 million... my bad..in that case... bring on kariya or forsberg... or both even... haha

playoffs, here we come!!!!!!!!!!

Lowe would be on crack if he thinks he can have a payroll of 20-22 million considering they have to sign york and smyth. Even last year the oilers payroll was hovering the 30 million mark. And i see them this year at 29 to 34 million (which is competative) as for the Flames I give them a thumbs up thye didn't sign huge deals aside for Iggy Amonte and McCarty is a steal of a deal for both those players compared to what players are getting now!

SketchifisT
Karyia is over rated now he has droped off. Forsberg is not the same player from all his injuries but he is still a fantastic player and a great passer ( hopefully vancouver gets him )

yet to see how pronger is after his injuries but he is a great pick up for Edmonton.

As for modano i had him score on me a bunch last summer and it was great. He is i believe the best at what he does. He is so shifty yet so quick, he decieves goalies he is one of those players that will always bounce back and whoever gets him will have a dangerous player. His shots from the off wing are just astonishin.

You played with Modano?!

Bad Egg

Let's evaluate the trade:

Pronger is 31, lot's of mileage left for a defenseman.

He is 6' 6", mean enough & he can skate good enough.

He has won the Norris (best defenseman) & Hart (MVP) trophies.

In the last year of full playing 03/04, he played 80 games and scored 54 points while logging over 27 minutes of ice time a night(2nd most in league).

I would put him at the least one of the top 3 or 4 defenseman in the league. Brewer is OK, but not nearly at the same level. The other two young guys were seen here on a nightly basis last year with the Roadrunners and were found wanting. If the team that gets the best player wins the deal, Edmonton won one for a change.

You have to think that the Blues were just trying to find some room under the salary cap for all their high priced forwards. It's kind of ironic, a player coming to Edmonton because of economic reasons instead of leaving. Gotta give the new CBA a  .

ALIAS81
Mike Peca is the newest Oiler...

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story.asp?id=132334

Bad Egg
Wow, that one is pretty wild too...I kind of liked York and his style of play would have benefitted by the new rules.

On the other hand, any chance to get a guy like Peca on your team you have to take it. He is just a nasty shit disturber and nobody wants to play against him. He is a two time Selke winner as best defensive forward - he is pretty well recognized as the premier shut-down forward/center in the league. Calgary and Vancouver aren't going to like playing the Oilers quite so much this year I think.

Next on the list: A first line center who can shoot the puck and actually put it in the net...

(anyone else notice the new look is noticeably tougher than before?)

Summer trainin camp, played against him and a few others, a lot more prospects then NHL players but yeah ive had my show lit up by some of the greats ;) Ill make a save here and there, I have offers to play Div 1 in Germany which is like AHL level over here, but iwont be a starter so yeah pretty much i will never make the NHL if i do i will be a back up at best.

However right now im not cleared by doctors to play hockey so yeah... im on the outside lookin in

Thats awsome man hope everything works out for you get me some autographs if you can sometime

The peca trade i'm not feeling it why go for a defensive forward and end up trading one of your top forward? With the new NHL rules oilers might be in trouble but then again a free agent signing like Kariya might do the trick!

News: Forsberg signs with Philly

Wask
The flyers just signed Foresberg, turning into a dangerous team. http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/

I think it will be Ottawa and Philly in the east, Calgary and Vancouver in the west for the conference finals.

SketchifisT
If vancouver gets Neidermyer and gets rid of cloutier i could see it. but idont think cloutier can do it. Great goalie but idont think he can do it.

I think the penguins are a dark horse in the East, if there team comes together they will be good. They just picked up Gonchar there 2nd overall pick from last years draft is UNBELIEVABLE i think he shoulda gone 1st and i believe is better then crosby , however we will see how he handle the body being tossed on him. But fluery if plays well it may be dangerous. No clue what will happen all i know is im excited to see everything start goin again.

If oilers get good goaltendin which whatever cap room they have left they maybe another dark horse.

dsl55
Too bad we lost nedved and york, nedved really picked us up last season. I think our new team is gonna have a lot of grit and determination, sadly I will be in ottawa all hockey season, but I'll be at the corel centre for every oil game!

Also: Who plays smallworld fantasy hockey every season? We should make a 780 tuners league in there and we cans ee which of us has th best picks!

notaturbotalon
Kariya's good and all but not that reliable, what we need is another power forward like Bill Guerin. The Peca trade will give us a little more experience but in my opinion York and Peca are almost the same caibre of player. As for goaltending I think Conklin could develop into one of the premiere goalies in the league, which we might be able to keep this time thanks to the CBA. All we need is one more player now, if Lowe screws with the team too much they'll lose their chemistry and we'll be no better off than the Rangers have been post 94.

limecorrado
People lowe should consider dollars permitting

Karyia
young
Messier
Lindros
Carter
Whitney
Salanne (SP?)
Leclair

:fingersx: :fingersx: :fingersx: :fingersx: :fingersx: :fingersx:

Lots of rumours surrounding Karyia and messier comming to the oilers.

...err, chemistry? I hope like hell they loose the "chemistry" that helped them miss the playoffs last year and lose in the first round every other year since gawd knows when. The Rangers post 94 were coming off a Stanley Cup, we aren't close to that here.

York is a good player but with Peca you get a guy that can kill penalties, something the Oil lacked last year with Marchant gone. You also get a super pest that can shut down the other teams top scorers - that is just as important as scoring.

I agree that they are down to finding one more player, ideally a forward (preferably a center) who can score. They have some good young forwards coming up and they are closing in on their cap space so they can't keep up with the big signings.

Yeah, just like a Cobalt and an M3 are almost the same calibre of car. Don't get me wrong, I really like Mike York. Only thing is he can't play defense. Peca will put up more points this year than York, if they play the same amount or a similar amount of games. Only difference is Peca will bug the shit out of anyone, and York just doesn't have that grit. If we can get a FREAKIN FIRST LINE CENTRE LIKE WE NEED, I think the Oilers are a lock for the playoffs.

dsl55
I don't want(and he won;t be coming anyways) lindros here. Selanne is good, but just like kariya has kinda fallen off the radar. I'd like to see us bring in a good centreman like someone said.

We have pronger, a great defenceman who can and will move the puck, and has more points than any of our forwards, Peca, shit disturber who will keep the puck in motion and can cout on to score goals, we have a good young forward in ales hemsky, who if we could just get to shoot the god damn puck, would start to break out(he likes to pass it back) we have our beloved smytty who will get our garbage goals and dig the net, we just need that centreman who can bring them all together.

Anyone hear the rumor laraque is going? I'd like to see him stay, incase no one followed it, he made huge steps in goal scoring over in europe, he's an identifiable oiler, a brand name if you will, the fans love him, and he's someone who can look out for our smaller boys.

And Gator?(Jason Smith) Well I would be real dissapointed if we dropped him, he works hard, is a leader, and he has grit and determination.

Sorry this was so long, I love hockey :fingersx:

shorti
Could you imagine if Messier came back? Everyone in Rexall would be screaming MMMMOOOOOOOSSSSSSSEEEEE!!!!! all fucking night long.....it would be awsome. Other than that he's an old man now, it's time to give him his walker and send him off to a home. :p

notaturbotalon
I really hope Laraque doesn't leave, with the new scheduling methods, 8 games against division rivals, it would be nice to have him out there smashing heads.

ChromeDragon
Whatever happened to Selanne? He came out in his rookie year and assraped the whole league....maybe he just misses Winnipeg?

He is still a great player, but he just hasn't ever come close to that first year.

Yea i was ust having this discussion. 76 goals in his rookie year and 113pts i believe. He ha always been over shadowed and playing with the wrong team in my opinion. He cam close to that mark with anahiem 52 goals but thats the closest. Hes either on a defensive minded team that doesn't allow him to reach his offensive potential or he's either been over shadowed by other star players ei. Tkatchuk, Kariya, Forsberg/Sakic. He would look good in a montreal jersey or oilers jersey. Oilers would be a better choice b/c of the style they play will resemble to the jets. He's stil a 25+ goal scorer regardless.

3gEdmonton
Oilers might be getting Kariya

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story.asp?id=132491

rumour has it...strictly rumour...(taken off of the sportsnet.ca forum)

reasoner and a draft pick to the flyers for Michael Handzus...

Sign Kariya... and Messier...and we'll have all 41 of our games sold out....:blue: :blue: :blue: cant wait for the new season...

Heard about that too wasn't too sure... finally something to look forward to as an oiler fan. Imagine the lineup

Kariya
Smyth
Hemsky
Peca
Pronger
Handzus
Dvorak

Thats a pretty strong team right there stanley cup contenders for sure (atleast on paper)! Messier should come back to finish off his career as an oiler. Whats going on with Palffy... has anyone heard anything about Pavel Bure?! This is a guy that had 50+ goal seasons in vancouver. The russian rocket has lost alot of fuel

ALIAS81
Messier should sign here for the sake of retiring in the Oil jersey...

Pavel's agent says hes pretty much done with Hockey... He would have to go through another surgery before even stepping on the ice... Pavel is more concerned with his health and way of life... wouldve been nice to see him in our run and gun system though...

here is a look on the remaining top free agents at their respective positions

Still available at forward are Ziggy Palffy, Paul Kariya, Teemu Selanne, Jozef Stumpel, Jason Allison, Eric Lindros, Ray Whitney, John LeClair, Peter Bondra, Anson Carter, Yanic Perreault and Andrew Brunette.

On defence, there's Roman Hamrlik, Glen Wesley, Scott Lachance, Marcus Ragnarsson, Murray Baron and Bryan Marchment.

In goal, there's Nikolai Khabibulin, clearly the top prize, as well as Curtis Joseph, Sean Burke, Roman Cechmanek, Arturs Irbe, Chris Osgood and Steve Shields.

3gEdmonton
Eric Lindros,
Ray Whitney,
John LeClair,
Peter Bondra,
Paul Kariya

Would be great candidates for the oil to take a run at... i'm sure Lindros, Whitney and LeClair can be signed for bargain prices.

ALIAS81
Anybody on that list, but Lindros... I think hes too slow for our system... Even Laraque can outplay him now... LeClair plays a Ryan Smyth type in the goalie's face type game, so i dont think we need him... Bondra, Kariya and Whitney are stellar because they posess speed...

On a side note... Bulin Wall signed with Chicago moments ago...

3gEdmonton

I agree with you about Lindros Lowe might be able to sway him this way and sign him up for a 2 million a year contract.. Lindros at 2 mill is a bargain.. he's got injury problems notably concussion but making him commit to playing as an oiler and getting his career back on track... plus we do need a center.

Bondra
Whitney
Kariya
Throw in Palffy too would be a good fit in the oiler style of play

ALIAS81
http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/arti...805_131159_6220

not bad of a core...

Pronger, J. Smith
Staios, Semenov
Ulanov, Cross and Bergeron sharing the 6th position...

Conks #1
Jussi #2

Now lets get a damn Centre already... Bondra or Kariya or even Palffy... I know we can pull it off... After seeing what we've brought in this week, i am getting goosebumps thinking about the playoffs and the season hasnt even started yet...

Lets go OIL!!!!!!

s2oooR
Bondra is a favourite player of mine, but he IS getting old though..... Kariya I really like.... but he's not a true center, but i'd take him anyways.....

shorti
I'm glad they signed ulanov again. You could hit that guy in the face with a sack of doorknobs and he won't go down.
