Is proficiency at the English language dying out??? - Click HERE for Original Thread

REFLUX
Is it just me or is proper grammar, spelling & variety in vocabulary slowly becoming extinct?

In the past little while I've read some pretty poorly constructed sentences, I remember a time when my prof's used to deduct marks for poor use of English but within the past year there has been talk of eliminating the English 101/102 requirement for a university degree.

It just doesn't make sense to me, sure so long as you understand & can use what you have learned, there is no real need to know how to write it out but just like many other things in life, being able to write well takes Practice.

You may not be required to organize and put your thoughts on paper for Class A but you will need to for your resume, for a cover letter. Where are those writing skills then? Probably left behind with, "is jus a stupid essay, i no how to do the werk"

Spellcheck & Grammar check can only go so far!

I mean, does anyone else notice how mind numbing it is to read a sentence like this:
quote:
is XXX use this site his ride is stock blue i wanna see pics of his ride

Honestly, I don't think I have dyslexia but I seriously had to read this TWICE before I fully figured it out.
Not only was it difficult to comprehend but within the same line of text, "his ride" was referenced twice. Maybe it's just me but one should be able to infer that "XXX's" ride is the subject of discussion.

Does anyone see the point here?
Sure the gist of the message was conveyed but with much difficulty & redundancy. How will the English speaking world communicate if more & more people speak/type like this?

Especially if the Internet is becoming a major artery of communication.

wel my ranting stopping for becose totly pissd me off now i is

I hear ya man, I took IB english and some of the stuff here is just rape of the language.

I love the excuse "it's just the internet, who cares, I ain't in english class yo"

Haha and while we are on the topic of slaughtering the english language, where is bigmack000?

REFLUX
In bigmack000's defense, he has good reason for his poorly typed English.
He can post about it if he wishes.

But even then, his posts are still better than the one I quoted.

i had really bad lead poisoning as a kid and it pretty much killed the spelling and grammer section of my brain. if it has to deal with english skills i suck the big one.

its not like i can just learn it like that. let say our brains are highways. all of you have nice straight highways that let the info you lern to just flow on in nice and smooth . Myself on the other hand my nice stright high way got nuked and all i have left is this twisty ass mountain road that is gravel that is all pot-holes .

quote:
Normal Values Return to top

Adults:

* Less than 20 micrograms/dL of lead in the blood

Children:

* Less than 10 micrograms/dL of lead in the blood

Note: dL = deciliter

What abnormal results mean Return to top

Adults:

* Workers exposed to lead should have blood lead levels below 40 micrograms/dL. Treatment is recommended if the level exceeds 80 micrograms/dL.

Children:

* Greater than 10 micrograms/dL of lead in the blood is abnormal. The source of lead must be identified and removed.
* Greater than 25 micrograms/dL of lead is abnormal, and may indicate the need for treatment.

i was at about 35 micrograms/dl google search it or go here http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/...icle/002473.htm

also i was in grade 2 and 3 when i got it. didn't find out till grade 4 . i do try my best but it hard to learn and when i do figer stuff out i forget it rigth away or i forget a bunch of other stuff permanent brain damage is hard to over come .

Yes, the intarweb is killing the English language. This isn't really news, though. And it's also not the first time English was morphed into a lesser tongue. The shit we speak now would make Shakespeare toss his biscuits and blood pudding; and that's for those of us who use grammar.

JustinL
As long as I can understand the message in one read I don't take issue with it. Although having said that, a person's grammar and spelling is a contributing factor to impression people get of that person through reading.

The one that's killing me now is the apostrophe.
's denotes possessive not plural.

Jord@n
It doesn't require much effort to make your sentences readable. This isn't an english essay, and we don't have to have perfect grammer/spelling but the time it takes to not type like a douche isn't much different then the time it takes to type like one.

That fact should be intuitively obvious even to the casual observer.

I agree about the Internet, but it started long before the Internet was invented (by Al Gore).

Mark Twain, in the 1800's, wrote:
"Anyone who can only think of one way to spell a word obviously lacks imagination."

wubba_65
Agreement in whole. People who have the ability to write correctly, but are just too lazy to take the time annoy the crap out of me. Especially with using the wrong spelling of words.

Hear - refers to the ability to listen to some sound source. Ie I can hear the drums

Here - denoting a location. Ie My car was right here when I last saw it.

Write - marking some surface with characters in such a method as to be able to communicate some message to someone who can interpret and understand said characters

right - a direction (antonym = left), indicative of a positive outcome (I was in the right when I proceeded on a green light), etc.

Some people obviously have development issues, and can't understand the difference easily, but others are perfectly capable, yet choose (not chews) to ignore the basic concept of proper (somewhat) english.

Another thing I can't stand, and I think it happens with the younger people on the board, is the tendency to type a post in the same style they would speak it to their friends.

Ie So, um, yeah, I got caught speeding last night, and I was like only doing almost 20 over, I think. I don't really remember anyways, the cop comes up and was like 'you know how fast you were going?' and I was like, I dunno, 55?

It PISSES me off!

/end rant

what really bugs me, is when people mix up "then" and "than"

DeathBy240
I agree with you guys. What annoys me the most is subject/verb agreement. So many people mix up 'is' and 'are.'

My schooling and job have made me a grammar nazi, so much to the point that when I read anything with bad grammar, I want to pull my hair out. It's even worse when I the mistakes are in a published work.

Another big pet peeve is "I seen." It's I SAW the car, not I SEEN the car.

Joel did you copy and paste your reply into Word to fix any spelling errors? :D

ChromeDragon
Haha, Dave you ass.

Like Dave I have become a bit of a grammar nazi over the past couple of years. Before taking all of the grammar courses at school I would get annoyed at the really basic mistakes, but since it's not so bad. I realize that most people never really fully comprehend grammar and that's ok. Just because you mix up subject/verb and pronoun agreements doesn't mean you are stupid, it just means that you never really spent a lot of time learning that.

While most of you are looking at it as the degredation of the english language, I am seeing it as an evolution of human language as a whole. Sure it's aggravating to see people using punctuation for nothing but smilies, but that's one of the evolutions of our languages. I think that the internet is slowly developing a universal language that will be around for centuries, possibly even becoming a general universal language.

We are becoming very close on a global scale in terms of business, travel and basic communication, why not language?

P.S. I wrote a couple of papers about this in grammar class so I could go on for quite some time. Hehe.

dsl55
I wasn't trying to make fun of you bigmack :P I just always see someone bug ya a little about your typing, seemed like a running joke. Sorry though.

Buddyworm
I don't run into a whole lot of "there, their, here, hear" nor do I often notice when people mix up "its, it's". What really gets my goat is when people completely do away with TRYING to spell and use single letters instead. "k y r u so nazi about gramar??? cum on man" $#@! When the first four words of your sentence are distilled down to 4 letters you need a smack upside the head.

Hi Reflux,

That is in an iteresting point inwhich you have raised. I did thoroughly enjoy reading your post. I must admit that I agree. A fair amount of posts I have read I have needed to put on my special pair of decoder glasses to decode and fully comprehend what is actually said.

I do feel that in the society inwhich we live in, one has lost the ability to wite and communicate effectively. Granted there will always be spelling and grammar mistakes due to the diversity inwhich the 780 Tuner crown posesses and our vast multiculturalism. This things can be overlooked due to the nature of the group.

I feel that good comunication and clarity are essential in daily life. I do feel that these skills are lost and not effectively used. As time proceeds, these skills and the people whom posess them become infrequent and unusual.

For me, I prefer posts with content, good information and or good criticism. I must admit that reading the "Flame Wars" can be amusing to a point. However the flame wars never result in productive time. Ususally ego's becoming bruised and hard feelings.

Mike,

Mate, "inwhich" isn't actually a word. :)

The only thing worse than bad grammar is "business speak". Man do I hate that! It's the easy way to spot someone who doesn't really know what they're talking about.

To really leverage your grasp of the english language, you must use the best practice of bench marking against others. Otherwise, how are you going to fast track your game plan when your ducks aren't all in a row and you can't get reader buy-in?

It's gotten so bad, that there is business speak for business speak... these words are now called "fuzzwords"!

Hi Justin,

My appologies. I know I have used that word many of times. I just need to remember to intergrate better words. Nice catch on that one.
