door ajar light - Click HERE for Original Thread

bigdawg889
I have been having a problem with my door ajar light coming on along with the dome lights once and awhile even though my doors are clearly closed. The lights will flash for a bit, when I am driving then evenutally shut off. Have taken to the dealership and they claim nothing is wrong with the door ajar switches on my 2004 Rav4. Any ideas of what the problem may be, or how I could solve it. I read somewhere about using WD-40 on my door latches.

make sure the door latches are adjusted properly, could be not pushing the switch all the way, the switch could also be out of adjustement.
i had a supra do the same thing, adjusted the door latches and the problem went away.

The dealership said they checked the sensitivty of the switches, and they could find nothing wrong, should I take it in again and ask them to check the latches. It's still under warranty.

Hi Bigdawg889,

Your description of the problem leads me to believe that there is a problem with the switch not making proper contact with the door. You can test the swith your self by locating it and pushing it in while the keys are in the ignition. When the switch is pushed in, your lights will go out. The switch is located along the frame of the door when the door is open. You will be looking at not the door its self but where the door connects. The switch is this little rubber nob that is sticking out of the frame. Chances are that your door may be out of alignment, or the latches are not allowing the door to close properly. Another possibility is to check to make sure all your doors are properly closed. Next time the light turns on, open the door and try to close your door with a little more force next time. It may help the problem.

Vehicles are very finicky and are exceptionally good at making us look like idiots by not reproducing the issue when we take it in for a problem.

This is all I can advise for now. Hope this helps.

Does the glass open in the back hatch? If so, you might want to check that the hatch is closed and the glass is, too.

I rented a Matrix a while back, and the stupid door ajar light kept coming on. It was really annoying for about 3 days, until I found out the glass flips open in the hatch. The glass looked closed, but it wasn't.

No their is no glass hatch in the rear tailgate, it's a full door and window together. The problem is still there, the last few days, I checked the rubber switches and they all work when you press them in . Sprayed some WD-40 and I guess that didn't work either. Don't know what else I can do, expect take it back to the dealership and have them look at it again, though the last time I did they told me nothing was wrong, and that I should make sure I shut my door fully. I am pretty sure I shut the doors fully, as I have had this vehicle for a year now, and this problem only materialized recently, and it has been happening at least a half dozen times now.

I had an Eclipse with that problem - the boot that was over the switch was torn, and the switch inside would get corroded. Cleaned it out, worked fine.

That being said - I'd hope with a 2004 it wouldn't be corroded...
