Well, My buddy just called me up. He has a S13 JDM Silvia with a S20DET, and was driving along, apparently not doing anything stupid or aggressive, and the car was driving/sounding great. When all of a sudden there was a loud bang, smoke and small chunks of rubber went flying behind the car, he then coasted 100m and then the engine dyed. It cranked over once and then never turned over again. I can't wait to take a look at it, but it did this 500KM's from our home town, so I have to wait a couple weeks to go take a look at it. He has no mechanical skills and only took a quick look under the hood and under the car. He said all looked fine except oil pouring out of the back of the engine. But he seemed to think there weren't any other fluids leaking.
So.....What do you guys think it could be? What do you think I should look for when I get a chance? I was thinking maybe a oil line or rear main seal or something might explain all the oil, and maybe it seized when all the oil drained out?
He doens't want to puit money into fixing it as he was just going to sell it soon anyway, so be on the lookout for alot of parts and body panels going on sale very soon!!

Complexity
Major bummer man. Personally I have no idea what it could be. However, I am interested in how much he will be selling the car for.

This thread is about the problem.

But if your interested in the car or it's parts. Send me a PM.

if your saying he turned it over and it wouldnt go again, a rod probably found its resting place:( check for a big open hole in the block!! but i hope thats not the problem:fingersx:

twinturbo
Yeah I was thinking it might be a rod or the whole crank cracked. Should cause similiar symptoms. Easy enough to check though, just need to drop the oil pan and look!
Wish it was here unstead of in Edmonton!

Pro Drag
We should start a pool.

Here's my guess, the crankshaft pulley seperated on him and some shrapnel pierced the oil pan causing the leak.

twinturbo
Have you really seen that happen!
That would be pretty wild.

A pool would be very funny!

Hi TwinTurbo,

I would agree with Blaine. The bits of rubber would be what is left of the belts. The engine seizing would be as a result of the crank pulley coming loose and taking out, or putting a hole in the oil pan leaking out oil, causing the engine to seize. Also with the crank pulley (harmonic balancer) no longer providing balance to the crank shaft this inturn will no longer keep everything running smoothly causing your pistons and connecting rods to do some really interesting things.

Inshort your friend will need a new motor. It sounds like the bottom end is gone, and the head "may" be too. I think the Silvia is an interference motor.

I have done some searching and there are alot of SR20DE motors, but I can not locate and SR20DET motors. He can check www.nissanforums.com and see if someone there has one for sale or knows of someone that can connect him.

finding SR20DET's for sale isn't really a problem. Calgary has some shop ( I forget the name) that sells them for between $2000-$3000. And assuming everything else is fine, which it should be, this would be a easy, somewhat costly repair. However he is lazy and would rather loose money and just sell it as is or part it out, unless it's a cheap fix. I have told him, there is a 2% chance it's going to be a cheap fix. But, maybe it's a chance for him to get a new set of wheels and someone else to get a great, cheap project.
