| i wouldnt call them the most reliable cars around but they are very economical and cheap to fix when they do break down. they are a great little a-b car for sure. they dont have a shit load of power but the turbo gives it a good little jolt i suppose |

| no no they arent bad.. im just saying they arent as reliable as say a honda civic...something u can bash and bash and it never dies... if you maintain it, it will last you a long time.. the one my brother had lasted a long time had over 400k on it. just find a good one, and then take care of it and youll be fine and they are pretty good on gas..i cant remember tho are the turbo ones v6 tho? |

Hi Josh,
The Dodge Shadow Turbo is a good car. I believe the turbo motor is a 2.5L Turbo. I think there may be an option for a 2.2L Turbo also. I know that there are an abundance of these cars in the wreckers so parts would be easy to find. I have found that the Shadow has good room, interior is alright and the power is not bad. Another car you may want to consider is the Dodge Spirit. It is a little larger (interior) and I believe has the same engine options as the Spirit, Le Baron.
Inregards to the hp and lbs I am uncertain. Stuff that can go wrong with them is no different than what can go wrong in anyother vehicle that is not properly maintained. In the 2.5L engines the belts will squeel a little as this is normal. It is a different waterpump pulley set up that was used. I believe the pulley is an ungrooved pulley where a flat unribbed belt needs to be used.
Hope this helps,

| The thing about k-cars, you can fix them with chewing gum and a bootlace. |

I bought a Shadow Turbo ES new in 1988, and they came with a 2.2L turbo 4. It made 150hp, 170 torque. In later years (not sure when) they bumped it up to a 2.5L turbo.
They were not the most reliable cars even when they were new. Ours kept blowing the head gasket, cause it was just not engineered very well. The auto tranny (3 speed) also gave us a lot of problems, and was repaired/replaced several times. We sold the car when it was 6 years old.
I tried running the car at an autocross once. What a waste of time that was. The thing horrendously understeered on the course!
For bombing around on the street, though, they were a fun car to drive, and I really loved the comfort of the front seats on long trips. |

Oh the ticking you hear is normal :P
My dad had a 2.5L K-car was a blast, even though it was a NA Auto. I managed to learn how to control the shift with the gas pedal, if I pinned it, it wouldn't shift out of first unless Ilet of the gas.
I blew the head gasket by rev'ing it up to 6500rpm, blew the block heater right out.
Finally sorta killed it by ripping around trying to keep up to a pony with 3ppl in it, I had a total of 4 or 5 ppl and 500lbs of tools int he trunk, I forgot to check the oil and it was down 2 quarts when I did.
When he sold it to a wrecker, my dad got it when it was 5yrs old, and got rid of it 5yrs later, it had the name K-truck and it was about the throw a rod if not 2, the lifters or what ever wheren't doing so good and there was only 3 bolts holding the K-frame on. |

I keep seeing these cars with blown head gaskets, that's the most common problem with the 2.2/2.5 common block. With a replaced head gasket it's a pretty decent car, despite the usual chrysler problems like peeling paint, and the other things that come along with a car that's over 10 years old. The boost hits at about 3000 or 3500 rpm and really delivers. With some very mild modifications to the exhaust, intake, etc. this car is capable of a 14 second quarter.
cougar boy, I see you bought the car already. Refer to allpar's shadow's and "P-body" forum, and they'll tell you where to get the best headgasket for the 2.5L. Forwardmotioninc. sells one, they're probably the authority on parts for the 2.5L.
Oh about the ticking, this could sometimes have been linked to faulty valve guide seals. |
