REFLUX
just doing some down the line hunting

but what/who would you guys recommend when the time for a rebuild/new engine comes?

Options:

-Rebuild
-Jspec

if it's rebuild, by whom? any experiences/recommendations/fingers to point
if it's Jspec, where/from whom? experiences & etc etc pls

thanks!! :D

EDIT: any info on mazda remans?

REDX2NV
rotary?

i suggest rebuild with some heavy duty apex seals...

edmrx7
come to the next club meeting... we can talk your ear off about this stuff...

You do not want a j-spec... Too much money, not enough gain to warrant it.

Rebuilds come in all qualities... Depending on your car, you might want 3mm seals if you have a turbo, and you'll most definately want a street port, etc..

come by on Feb 4th and meet us... There is more info about the meeting at

Edmonton RX-7 website

s2oooR
is that blond girl comming to the meeting :D?

WookeysRX7
Hey richard, i am gonna try and show up at the next meeting this time. i'll bring the ol'7 too. haha. I heard there was a RX7 specialty place down in calgary that rebuilds rotory's and stuff. I'll see if i can get the same from somewhere. gimme a bit.

WookeysRX7
k found it. The place is called RX7 Specialties. Try them i guess. I heard they were good. unless there are people here in the city that rebuild them and do a good job. I heard that Karl from Mayfield JB's rebuilds them.

True, but I don't know how experienced he is.... I'd go with Richard & Conroy they're pretty good and have credable work rollin around the city...

The guys that run the edmonton club have some neat toys that they themselves have built + some friends cars they've done... There are people here in Edmonton that can do these cars just fine. RX7 Specialties I haven't heard to much about them, a couple of good things and a couple of bad things.... take your pick!

WookeysRX7
heh well. now we know people that can do it in edmonton too! sweet. i was just throwin some names out and i heard of the one in Calgary so i though i'd put it out there but if its crap then dont go for it. I'd go with guys that really know what they are doin and guys that actually drive 7's and use their own stuff so by the sounds of it, i'd go with Richard and Connroy.

Peace

how about Carl?

Mazda Mechanic.com

heard good stuff about him too

Richard, Conroy: any feedback about him?

PraxRX7
Ah Carl Modine... where shall I start...

The work I have seen come out of his shop is cleaner than most other places. He does do good work. Personally I will stick with Doug at Abbey Road.

I e-mailed Carl when I was first looking for a mechanic to work on my car...he was extremely rude, extremely egotistical (best of the best of the best SIR!), extremely unfriendly, and extremely unfair.

But he does good work. (I personally will not deal with a self-centered ass like him though, in 30 years of working on Mazdas he still hasn't learned how to treat a customer or possible customer).

Doug at Abbey Road has always been friendly, straight and to the point, and IF something comes out of his shop that wasn't quite right, he will take responsibility where it is due. I will not take my RX-7 anywhere else.

The ONLY thing that impressed me about Carl was a 12A rebuild that I saw that was done so neat and tidy it almost brought a tear to my eye.

I am sure Doug from Abbey Road is as good if not better.

Richard and Conroy know thier stuff as well.

My advice, talk to em all, make a decision.

Personally, any guy like Carl who only has a website and an e-mail address to find him with...well...if he has to be that secretive he is not someone I need to deal with. He basically told me that he didn't need my business because he already has enough of a customer base. He wouldn't even answer any simple questions. He cares more about the $$$ than the cars and thier owners. He won't just help out or give advice out of the good of his heart unless $$$ is involved.

Not a nice guy at all.

Doug is great though!~

was thinkin this would b my best option as well ;)

but i will call around, i would still like to hear what Richard and Conroy have to say about Carl

Rotary specialist to rotary specialist

4kruzn
richard has still never ment carl moidine and I (conroy) have known him for over ten years. if you ever talk to carl mention my name and he will tear your ear off for a half hour about back yard mecanics that know nothing.... while hes talking i will be putting the finishing touches on our 100th rotory rebuild. in the spring we will be showing our newest monster rotary which is a supercharged, nitrous injected first gen....... we are hoping to see close to 300HP!!!! we have our fingers crossed. see you at the track. conroy. remember red lines are for sissys!!!

REFLUX
thanks for the input Conroy!!

i will see if i can make the next RX-7 meet & maybe we can do some talking (with Richard if he's there as well)

P.S. I remember Edwin telling me something about the backyard mechanic thing...;)

now
I have a few engines on hand and ready to go.
86 to 88 n/a rebuilt to stock
89 to 91 n/a rebuilt and ported
93 rebuilt, every seal and bearing new, 3mm apex seals, all sized to mazda min specs.
all are priced about or less than mazda rebuilt prices.

see ya at the next meeting
matt

4kruzn
hey there NOW when you rebuilt those engines did you put in a high lift cam? what about the 5 angle valve job or what about copper head gaskets??? I ve heard you can get a stroker kit to turn a 12a into a 13b any info on that???

LMAO! Karl, i gotta see your wagon run man, I was the guy that game and talked to you a couple months back about the 7 you took her for a test drive and i have you $5. Remember me?! anywase, how much did you say that you could get a Header for again? for the 13B.

Oh and heres a dumb question, how much do those turbo's in the sprints push? haha like what, 2 psi?lol :gay:

now
ok if anyone has checked as of late the prices for mazda rebuilt motors
are as follows:
86-88 n/a $2381.46
89-91 n/a $4437.00
93-95 TT $4590.00
+ $1000.00 core charge
less what ever discount you can get off retail at the dealer

now as for the motors i have on hand:
86-88 n/a $ 2000.00
89-91 n/a $ 3300.00
93-95 TT $ 3800.00
+core
these are all built with new apex seals, oil control rings, and race corner seal springs.

Hey, So did redoing the exhaust help??? I hope my 10 min. diagnosis was worth the $5 :D The headers are about $250 I think. But ask Conroy (4Kruzn) about them cuz he's the guy who builds them. He'll be at the meeting when you come. I'm sure you'll see the wagon run this summer. It won't be the fastest car out there but it will be the fastest station wagon.......... with a factory roof rack!!!

:) Mazda rebuild aren't always built with new rotors or rotor housings. The "spec" all their parts and re-use the okay ones. But spec to Mazda means .014" clearance on the apex seal groove in the rotor and up to .250" of chrome missing from the rotor housing. Mazda takes the cores back like everyone else and re-uses as many parts as possible. Try pricing out all new parts next time you're at Mazda and you'll end up with about $3500-$4000 just for rotors, housings, and endplates. NOT CHEAP! So..... there's some edumacation! My brain hurts!

Karl :gay:

4kruzn
Edwin the factory rebuilds like we all do only no garrenties as to what is new and what isnt. I dont like to bad mouth the mazda motors but the factory will even reuse apex seals... no part is garrented to be new except the gaskets. the factory has a spec manual and anything that is within spec can go back in... i have taken apart a factory motor with 3k on it and found that one of the rotors had a big dent in it and had been filed down in spots to cleen it up???? at least with the local rbuilds you can be told or request what is to be new or replaced in you motor.

convoy builds a good motor, but in most cases is rebuilding your motor and
depending on the damage the cost can vary, what I have is ready to go
regardless of the condition of your core.
I can build a cheep rebuilt, reusing oil control rings that are within spec
good for maybe 50,000km that saves almost $300.00 and you wouldn't know
until years later, along with used apex seals that are within spec, saves even more.
all my rebuilds have: side housings lapped to flat, oring grooves are
bead blaster 100% clean to insure like new seal, most get new bearings
all 93's get new bearings, the list goes on.
mazda factory rebuilts are built with anything that meets their specs, I have seen
some of what mazda's rebuilders have put together and you are kidding yourself
if you think you are getting new rotors and housings.
I have seen a couple motors that had oil control rings that were more than 50% gone
and housings that were well used, out of the box from mazda, some are real junk and
some are great, you just don't know what you are getting.
matt

ewind
i see.. thanks for clearing that up dood

now
did some checking today and my price for the 93 motor is very good
to get a 3mm apex seal motor built will cost you way more than what i am asking

You do not want a j-spec... Too much money, not enough gain to warrant it.

First of all, 3mm seals are crap. I suggest reading this thread: http://www.rx7club.com/forum/showthread.ph...25&pagenumber=1

page 1, about 3/4 way down there is a link to another thread you should read.

Jspecs are a hell of a lot cheaper than a rebuild. Plus Id almost trust a jspec over some of the rebuilds out there.

redbaron303
You mean this link on that debates the seals?!

As much as I loved my rotary, I didn't know much about all of the seals and works as I have never rebuilt a motor. Frankly I would say a piece of equipment that does the same thing just as good but is cheaper is the way to go. I'm not so sure if that is a good way to think about rx7's... In anycase I'm sure you can get great 2mm seals and I'm sure you can also get equally great 3mm seals which probably leaves it to the question of what you'd prefer to put into your motor. That comment is based on assumptions and no technical/hands on based knowledge. Oh well.

(Just putting a link to that thread)

dr0x
Mazda seals have been proven to take 800bhp :) That should be enough of a reason to not use 3mm alone.

I know a few people who found motors at our local auto wreckers
they were a great price, I feel this is no different than getting a j-spec.
J-spec motors are nothing more than a motor from a auto wrecker in japan,
and anyone who thinks these motors from japan only have 30,000km on them
are dreaming, I talked to a couple of guys in japan that source motors for the
importers, they laughed when they heard that the j-spec motors are said to only have
30,000km, they said that most wrecker motors are 60,000 to 100,000km and
the only ones that are good to "drop in and go" are ones that came from a crashed
car, which are only maybe 10% of j-spec motors.
Most of the j-spec motors have been sitting around for years before they
have found their way to north america.
In my opinion a j-spec is only good for a core to rebuild, this way you know what
you have and you know how long it will last.
As for the motors that were from the wreckers here, both needed to be rebuilt,
running them as they were would have only done more damage.
But if you still think a j-spec is a great deal, get one and you will find
in the long run it will end up costing more than getting a good rebuilt.

Matt

dr0x
I dont think they are a real good deal, but Ive seen rebuilt engines w/ 1k on them that showed 80psi on a comp test (warm engine, spark/fuel disabled, WOT) Ive also seen jspecs that still had 120psi comp.

I would fully expect a rebuilt with only 1k on it to have low compression
in fact a rebuilt getting 80psi at only 1k is great!
until a fresh rebuilt has 5000 miles or more, the apex seals have
not really had a chance to wear to match the housings.
Way to much is put on compression tests, the motor I have
apart at the moment had 185000km on it and its compression was great,
going on compression along a person might have concluded that it would
be good for a long time, when in reality the apex seals were worn to the point
that I would bet money that they would have failed within the next 10k.

matt

4kruzn
 the problem is is that a rotory engine can have perfect compression five seconds before it blows up! as a matter of fact in racing these engines for the last ten or twelve years, it has been my experience that they tend to run best just before they blow. dont take our word for it but you Will be far better off with a rebuilt motor from any one of us local builders than taking a chance on a used jspec...

No not at all! It was just an idea, I was so set on an EG project, then I started thinking about an RX-7 again. One thing is I really have a problem with 2 seaters, so I would have to find an S5 2+2 in perfect condition, which I have a feeling I will not find. Terry yours is great except for it's not 2+2, you don't wanna sell it anyways do you?

ewind
i think you'll have a very hard time finding a perfect s5... let alone one with w 2+2 ... i think anyways..... unless you go out of edmonton, but i honestly have never seen a 2+2 s5 unless someone modded it

RX_AGENT
That's why I see it as a very slim chance for me to go back to an RX-7, unfortunatly.......

dr0x
I believe there is a s5 NA being sold on canada trader in edmonton. It has like 100k on the clock and looks pretty clean. It might be worth checking out.
