Hi Hearse,
......Well that is a good question. It depends on what shape the body is in and if it is a Sedan or a Wagon. I would look to do something original. I would completely repaint it with a multipayer paint job so that the paint would change colors depending on how the light is striking the surface. I would remove everything out of the car for the paint including the engine. I would paint the engine bay the same as the rest of the car. Why??? Because I like consistancy. The paint would be complex, but yet simple and classy. I would fabricate something for the body to make it more bold, yet distinguished. Something along the lines of a front and rear spoiler to make it look like it came from the factory. I would shave the door handels.
I would then switch out the motor and maybe throw a 1JZ or a 2JZ motor with all the wiring harness, ECU, manual transmission, fuel controllers, boost controllers, etc that I would need. Another Engine choice is the ones for the Tacoma's or Avalon/Camry and throw on the TRD Supercharger.
I would drop the car a little (maybe 0.5 or 1.00 inches.) I would upgrade the suspension so it is firmer and tighter, and also fabricate a front and rear strut tower bar along with front and rear sway bars. I would do this more so for handeling and also show.
Brakes I would try to upgrade to MKIV brakes, or even try to fit/ fabricate to fit some Brembo's Calipers, pads, and upgrade to slotted rotors. The brake lines would be made of stainless steel.
As for the rims and exhaust, they too would be upgraded, but it would need to suit the car. Noise and apperance are critical factors in my decision.
What would you do?
Everyones answer depends on what they perceive the car to be.
IE) A project car, A car to go from point A to B, A winter beater, A parts car?

5 speed supra tranny swap is the first thing im gonna do to my cressida, then turbocharge the 7mge or get a 1jzgte swap, then suspension, then brake kit and then wheels....
i guess tahts bout it |

Mike,
I like some of your ideas. I can't say that a lot of them didn't occur to me, already. In terms of the body, it has a lot of rust on the wheel lips. I'm going to be doing body work anyway, so I in fact had planned to shave the sides smooth and annex the moulding. I was going to go with a very subtle rear spoiler, and a natural looking front spoiler if I could. The front of the car doesn't look all that bad, I was hoping for a more retro-looking under the bumper front spoiler, something along the lines of this:

I wonder, what car could I pirate this off of? Or something similar?
The other problem is the rear bumper. The thing is just freakin' massive. I mean it's gotta be a foot and a half long.
I plan to go with retro style racing wheels, similar to these:

or

Now the colour is a difficult decision. I like the gold inlay in the wheels, so the car might be gold to match, or black. I'm looking for classic here, I think multilayer might not suit that. Out of most of the body work, the colour is the only thing I haven't decided.
As for the engine, that won't be done for about a year. This is basically my gf's car for the winter, but I'll be slowly working on it. So the 5M-GE will reman stock for the moment, and then I am planning on a radical transplant that probably no one is going to be able to guess - at least the specifics. Unless they already heard me mention it somewhere else.
The suspension has just been replaced, and I like the car's stance now. It's hard to justify spending money replacing new parts.

Maybe you can get some inspiration from my Cressida:

There's no need for a front lip if you lower the car enough. Or else go to the junk yard and find a second or third Cressida front lip and stack them together.
I highly recommend the 5 speed swap, 99% of it is bolt-on and available at the junkyard most of the time. |

| i like the idea of stacking two together, i might try that. If it doesn't work, I'll be out like what, $12? |

Hi Hearse,
As for the wheels I like these ones more out of the two. www.specialist-leisure.co.uk/images...rewind_gold.jpg
I would try to compliment the paint to match the wheels, or have the wheels compliment the paint. Seeing as how the wheels are gold, I would have a metalic gold stripe run just below the windows to the top of the mouldings all the way around the car (trunk, and hood but very small and thin there and you want the lines to have a flowing look). Or you could paint the car a metalic Gold or Champagne color. Classy, bold but yet it would still do the trick.
I would focus on the body work first. Also check the car for rust in the inner fender seams. This seems to be a common place for Toyotas to rust and rot.
Another idea is why not replace the rear taillight assembly with a different car. Ie) Lexus ES 300
http://www.cardomain.com/ride/789799
In addition to removing the mouldings, you could look at removing the side markers too. Having a rear bumper custom fabricated and installed so that it would be a seamless transition from the trunk to the bumper.
The retro looking front spoiler on the Silver Corolla is not too bad. You may want to consider moving it up more to line up with the bumper so it is a seamless transition. But then again that is just how I would have it. LOL
As for the engine, I am looking forward to seeing the radical transplant when it arrives. Just be mindfull of the weight of the new engine you are dropping in. You will want to adjust and tweak other areas of the car if the engine you are dropping in weighs more than the stock 5M. With the new monster you are dropping in I would also consider installing thicker rear traction arms (assuming the car will still be RWD) No point having all that power if you are sitting there spinning your tires and not able to hook up. :D
You may also want to consider shaving/removing the Antena and running a new signal wire somewhere else in the car. It would give it a cleaner look.
You could also look at window tinting. I like the reflective mirror tint that you see on some Lexus vehicles, and also some what of a dark tint that you see on vehicles riding around. I am not a big fan of limo tint where you can not see in the car.

for the tail lights, I was going to go with rear fox bodied mustang euro's. I need to pretty much use something square because it's a square car. I was thinking of mostly filling in that area and going with two circles, but then I thought that it might look skyline-ish, and I'm really sort of soured on skylines right now after the last one I saw being piloted by a punk who looked 16 while the thing belched oil and thought it'd be funny to swerve into my lane with no signal forcing me to slam on my brakes while he weaved in and out of traffic. Okay, I like the skyline, and most of the people who drive them are good people, but...ugh, i just can't go there.
anyway these:

might work. I don't find them too outrageous, and outrageous is not something i'm going for here. Except in the engine department. Someone might be able to guess close, but won't be able to guess exactly. |

Hi hearse,
The tail lights look good. I am not a big fan of red for signal lights though. I prefer the Amber signal lights but that is just me. With the Euro lights, you may need to cut the existing holes in the body larger or weld new metal on to make them smaller so they can accomidate the lights.
The Euro lights on the Cressida woud be neat to see. Are the head lights in the Cressida sealed beam bulbs or are they composite lights? Have you thought of converting them to composite or even HID? You could even go as far as installing the new "T" Toyota Emblem on the hood and replace the old one? Just a few ideas I thought I would throw your way.
Another idea for you to do is paint your callipers Gold to match your rims. Painting callipers is easy to do. It is very easy to remove them. While you are at it a brake flush would not hurt too! :D
What about the interior? Are you going to leave that as it is? You could get the seats re-upholstered to leather, or change the interior completely to a different color. You could get the parts from a different Cressida and switch the insides or have them custom made and fit over the existing ones.

yeah, there will definitely be a lot of custom fabrication involving the rear tail lights. But I'm not afraid. I can do it. And if I think I can do it, I'll do it. It's as simple as that, I'll find a way.
Personally I love that little crown emblem or whatever that is. But I will probably remove the grille, and include a surround with a black honeycomb insert.
I'm in love with the interior and it's 100% perfect. No rips or tears or anything, and it's really comfortbale. So it will stay as is. Except the sound system needs to be revised along with some electrical issues.
that's about it. |

Hi Hearse,
Lots of custom fabrication can lead to a good project! :D There will be times when you are up to your eyeballs in stuff and you get that suddent feeling of "What have I done". But not to worry, it will all work out in the end. The Tan interior is a nice one. I used to own an 1984 Toyota Cressida fully loaded. It was Metalic Blue with Blue cloth interior. Unfortunately that one met an early death too. Most people will trade in or sell their cars when they want a new one. Me, I just write them off. ha ha ha. There is alot you can do with a sound system. The sound aspect (setting up, with proper speakers and tweaking) is out of my league. I think that rewiring with larger speaker wire is a good thing if you plan to run higher wattage speakers, Deck and some sort of DVD screen.

I saw the rims & said Red!
Look around for some "retro" sites for adds for cars & you will see that the gold rims went well on red, black and white cars...Just accent it off with stripes.
I would go for a real OEM look to the car but make small changes to the look. shave a little bit here & add a bit here kinda thing. Oh, and drop a turbo onto that 5m. It will be cheaper than a swap and prove to be more reliable in the long run.
Thats just me. |

we came up with a metallic green. Green and gold go together don't they?????
Well in my books they do. Should end up being pretty sharp. I took the car out today, and damn, when they say these things make good drift machines they aren't kidding. This thing can stay flat to the ground and get all four wheels sliding sideways. And it's an auto!
old cars are so much more fun than new cars... |

Get a video camera, find a Cliff, Set up the camera, lauch it off the cliff, take the video and post it on 780tuners..
Or you could keep it as a beater and buy something with more of a tuning base. |
|
|
| Supra_devil |
more of a tuning base? are you dumb?, do some research, this is an awesome sleeper. There is a friend of friend that has the wagon version and owns V8 domestics all day long, gets better mileage too.
its has suspension that is almost identical to the mk3 supra in the rear(IRS), what do you want and from who?
the front is the same as the mk2 supra, ok so you can choose from ST or Eibach for springs.
sway bars i'm not too sure about.
rims, 4x114.3 pretty common.
engine, well that engine can be tuned for more power easily, and unlike hondas it has torque already. it can be turboed for $1500 or less. the motor can be swapped for a 7m-gte (mk3 supra 240hp motor) using stock motor mounts. it bolts to the tranny and all.
1jz has been done.
1uz (4.0 dohc aluminum V8) has been done. 240hp and 250 tq iirc
2jz, same as 1jz, slightly bigger dimensions.
or just go old school, domestic V8, any number of trannys and then own. |

| I personally have never seen one that is fast. |
|
|
| Supra_devil |
thats cuz they play with Camaro SS's, Z28, 5.0L and such, not civics they already know their faster than a civic. LOL, j/k. i've been owned by a couple FAST civics before, but their not that common either.
Their not common here in edmonton cuz we are a shit hole town for a lot of car performance and such, not like the states. I have never actually seen one in person either, but i know haw to do it. |
|
|
| Nightstalker |
Any time buddy, any time ;)
Or wait, let me rephrase that.. Anytime my car is actually on the street.. because it seems to happen less and less now a days. |
|
|
| hearse |
this car has one of the most exceptional tuning bases I've ever seen. In terms of engine swaps, the sky is the limit
-the car will accept the 1jz or the 1uz, as mentioned before, not to mention that (as I've stated before) chrysler parts happen to be compatible with toyota drivetrain parts just by a fluke! Which means a small block "a" block 340, 318, 360 or bored 360 to 402 would all fit as well, granted the engine mounts would need fabricating. The suspension is FREAKING AMAZING ALREADY! and I haven't even done anything to it.
The only problem is with my A block swap I probably won't be allowed to race against civics and integras and the like. They'll probably want me to race 5.0's and camaro ss's. What I need is a very good set of mufflers to not give away the big secret under the hood. |
