orangeintegra
my civic is burning oil, it burn to a 1/2 full to oil line after each tank of gas. I'm still geting about 600km to a tank. I think is the piston ring but not sure do i rebuilt the engine if i changing the piston ring, and what include in rebuilt engine and how much does it usully cost or should i get a total different engine (zc, b16, b18a etc.) I like to do everything my self if i can.

the oil rings are toasted, you dont need to rebild the engine or anything, my car burns about 1/2 from full to low on the stick every 1000km. since my car isnt insured(and im not driving it without it), i cant test this myself, but id suggest using a thicker oil. my friends old tercel was using alot of oil, if he didnt change the oil he used, he would be filling it up every day, after changing he filled it up every other week. im gonna give it a try when i get my insurance back. you should try that before you do anything else, the oil probably costs a little bit more then the oil your using now, but if it works then you just saved yourself money from a rebuild. if not, you only wasted a few dollars on an oil change you would need anyways

try using 10-40? or 15-30... ?

im using 10w-30 right now, ill try 15w40 or sometihng the next time i go shopping for it

REDX2NV
still going to burn it...

these miracle fluids dont do anything to stop burning, only mask it. The oil control rings are worn completely and have to be replaced.

Hi Orangeintegra,

Your symptoms to me sound like your oil rings are due to be replaced. However there is a slight possability that your valve guides may be worn too. If they are worn, they would be allowing oil to travel into the combustion chamber and join the ignition (combustion) process.

Before you rip into the block, it may be best to check out the head and the valve guides. If this is the case, it will be alot less to replace the valve guides than to rip into the motor, take out your pistons and replace your rings. I am being optimistic here and am hoping it is just your guides. However I do suspect that it is your rings.

If you continue to run the motor as it is there will not be much damage done to it. Just a lack of performance from the engine. However on the bright side you are doing oil changes 600 kms regularly.

Hope it works out for you.

i believe my friends old tercel had worn valve guides, but before you rip the block away in any way, i think you should use thicker oil first. if it still burns oil, then you can try other methods. id rather spend a couple more dollars on oil then a few hundred(or thousands) fixing the ring problem. but i think the bottom line would be, how much do you love your car, or how much can you get a low milage jap engine for:thumbup:

Excuse my ignorance but...

Are the oil rings the same as "rocker shaft o-rings"?

its only a question and no, their not the same. oil control rings are the rings on the piston just before you hit the 2 compression rings. im not even sure what the rocker shaft o-rings are but they probably exist and are probably on the cylinder head:dunno:
