The video is setup and looks great. Now what do I need to hear the sound on my TV. I have an S video cable going to my TV, what should I buy for sound and how much? Thanks.

It's easiest to use a miniplug to RCA adapter.

What exactly are you trying to do? Are you trying to build a home theatre type setup around the computer? Here's my setup:

My computer outputs s-video to the TV. My computer has a digital output add-on for the sound card, and it outputs a digital signal to the receiver. Normally it's 2ch 96Khz PCM, but it can also output AC3 or DTS signals too.

Just buy a mini-jack y-splitter, then buy a mini-jack to RCA adapter.

plug your PC speakers into one of the y connections, and the TV into the other y connection using the mini-jack to RCA adapter.

GTS Jeff how do you send optical to your reciever? Is your reciever right by the PC or something? A 20ft optical cable can't be cheap!

I want to do it so I don't have to watch Top Gear on my 17: monitor anymore.

I have it now thanks. The desktop looks bad on my TV, but the video looks great.

A better way to do it yet is to get a VGA to HDMI converter and cable. If your vid card already has an HDMI slot on it just get the cable. You would be amazed with waht kind of quality you can get with that stuff.

Yeah, your average TV can't support the same resolution as a monitor so while video still looks good, trying to do something like move a file around can be a blurry pain.

Its a fairly good setup if you want to do some gaming, primarily FPS. I used to play Counter-Strike on my parents 52" TV with a 7 speaker system around me to provide sound. That was a blast.

I use digital coaxial instead of Toslink. I just use any old random composite cable.

Does a high def tv that can do 720p look as good as a computer monitor set at the max resolution the tv can do?

I have to set the resolution pretty low to fit my TV screen(27" Wega). The destop looks real blurry on my TV, high def will fix this to a point right?

Also when I play a video I can't see it on my monitor only on my TV. I have to restart my computer and unhook the S cable from the back to view video on my monitor again. Is there a way around this?

It's hard to say man without seeing it,

I have an all-in-wonder and it's a little sketchy, but i get it set up good after some screwing around.

on my setup my desktop runs at 1152x864@85hz, my 2nd output is in clone mode, and rund at 1024x768@60hz.

video out is ALWAYS on, even when booting windows I get the PC and TV both displaying, yours should do this too.

sometimes it will not display video's, black square, they will not appear on the 2nd display but will be playing on the PC.

To fix the black videos you can switch the 2nd monitor to your primary display (i set up hot keys eg. ctl+alt+2) and this usually allows the videos to show up on the TV. This will also cause your monitor to run at 60hz so you'll want to set it back.

Also it may be a driver issue, as I've upgraded my drivers and now seem to have no problems displaying video's on the TV without switching primary displays.

As you can see it's a somewhat muddled thing to describe, the ATI software isn't exactly teh greatest, not sure how other cards stack up.

all normal TV's run at 60Hz, a common resolution is 800x600, although on some bigger screens 1024x768 looks really good. again this is for normal TV's not HD tv, or enhanced res TV's like those that support 720p and 1080p formats, im sure if you google "video out resolution" you could find some good info

Z3r03rr0r
standard TV resolution is 320x280 for non HD tvs
if you have an HDTV you may have a DVI connector on both the vid card and the TV that should simplify the connection alot. HD tvs that run at 720 or 1080 should be able to handle higher resolutions decently mine for example can hold 1152x768 with good clarity.
You'll find there is a lot of playing around to do to get this set up they way you want it

Thanks for all the help:thumbup:

How can you save TV onto the heard drive. Its not possible with an S video cable is it?

Z3r03rr0r
you would need a TV tuner card and the applicable software
the ATI TV wonder is one of the more known cards out there for this but there is lots of other really good cards.
you plug the coaxial cable right into the tuner card though

This is what you want if you're looking for a tuner card:
http://cgi.ebay.ca/HAUPPAUGE-150MCE...1QQcmdZViewItem

I wish I'd bought this instead of my crappy all-in-wonder, does not require any cpu power, and is compatible with Windows Media Centre, which rocks BTW.

Now you just need an xbox360 so you can pause, playback and record TV from your couch using the windows media centre extender....
