I'm debating which tires and rims I would like to invest in in the future....?!
I've heard good things about both, and providing my dealings go right the new car will already have the Toyo's on it, but I'd like to pick up a second set of rims a little later on; my choices for rubber: (225/50VR16)
Toyo Proxes T1-S
OR
BFGoodrich G-Force T/A KDW
These are just the rims I like, by looks, not by weight or any other factor.... (17x7 or 17x8)
ADR Kasai (Gun Metallic + I think they're knock off Advan AVS Model 5's)
Advan AVS Model 5 (Gun Metallic or Silver Metallic)
Advan AVS Model 7 (Gun Metallic or Silver Metallic)
Enkei Bortex RPM-2 (Hyper black)
HRE 547 (Chrome)
Konig Traffic (Carbon or Graphite w/machined lip)
Question: I hear both tires have excellent wet/dry performance and that's my main concern that I have something for all sorts of summer driving, which tires are best, who has used either or?! As far as the rims go, my first choice is the advan avs model 5's but I assume they're extremely expensive, I'm just wondering which ones are the best quality wheel for finish, weight, overall appeal?! Does anyone have prices on the rubber I'm looking at or the rims again pref. the Advans?!
What are your opinions?! I think I'd Go with Advan Model 5's wrapped in the BFG's. |

| just my opinion but i have never been impressed by a bfg performance tire. I would buy the toyos . also if you are considering performance watch the wieght of the rims as they can very huge amounts and weight is going to slow you down alot more than you might think..... rims in 17" probably vary from 13 to 40lbs... 40lbs per rim will kill you et by .5 to 1 full second over a lighter rim. happy shoping. |

my vote would go towards t he toyo's...
those things look Grrrreat (say's tony the tiger) |

For overall quality, Advan would be the best out of those. I used to have the AVS Model 7 (17 x 7), and they are simply amazing. The price wasn't, but I never regret it.
So AVS Model 5 is very good choice. |

go Toyo
i was thinkin of pickin up some proxes myself...but decided that the cheaper, grippier Azenis suit me better ;)
even tho they're heavier....oh well |

Azenis might be a heavier tire, BUT it'll outperform the Toyo hands down. In the dry at least. Plus the Azenis' sidewalls won't flex as much as the Toyos. |

4kruzn, didn't know that weight could kill that much of my et.... I knew it played out in handling (kinda) and that heavier isn't good, but just didn't realize it was that much of a difference... so I guess HRE's are out, solid chrome and 17 or 18 inches, must weight close to 40lbs!
I had the BFG comp t/a's on my past nissan and they performed not bad, but my only other comparision is to the cdntire junk that was on my mazda or the michelin's on my dads acura... I'm not a fan of michelin or goodyear or cdn tire so i'm opting out of those :) I'm pretty sure I'll be running toyo's on my stock Z rims for the summer which will give me some comparision allowing me to better judge my decision (towards the BFG's) in the spring.
Some of you spoke of the Azenis tire, sounds like a Yokohama but I think I read somewhere it was a falken (sorry if I'm completely wrong) but providing I find the Toyo's better for me, with this new suggestion what is a better tire and for what?! I'm looking for the best wet/dry/handling/looks tire that I can get that isn't insanely expensive and will last a little longer than a week...... No I haven't done any price researching but that'll come later.
BTW: Main intended uses for these tires are: Daily driven, autox, drag, possible a lapping event on a circut course, anything else I can think of...?
Like in every other post I've made, bang for buck is something I want, but I'll put out the money for something if I know it's going to be worth it. Frankly tires are as they hold you to the road! I had my heart set on the Advans so I think I'll budget for those, I'm pretty sure they'd be relatively light but I can only find info on the japanese webpage which means I'm shit outta luck on reading it :S
Thanks for the input again :) |

tires are round and black, i could care less if they look like shit, so long as they last a long time, grip great and dont weigh a ton.
i like the koenigs and the enkies, but thats just my two cents. |
|
|
| REFLUX |
yeah...i dont think tires add much to the "look" factor
they're round...black...rubber......with grooves......WOW
anyways, if you want good wet driveability, i haven't heard any good things about Azenis' in the rain (yes they're Falken)
but like schlong8 said, in dry the Azenis will beat out the Toyo's
personally, the rain factor ALMOST played a big role in my decidin to go w/ Azenis' as well...but then i thought: "When the hell am i going to drive FAST in rain???"
go shop around Chris, cuz 17" rubbers aren't gonna b cheap no matter the brand |

Visit Tirerack.com and read the customers ratings on many different kinds of tires.
I'm no tire expert, but they are the only thing touching the roads. So do good research. How about some S03?
As for the weight of the Advans, they don't actually tell you even on the Japanese site. I weighed my Model 7 (17), and it was about 19 lbs. The Model 5 should be around the same (I could be wrong). None of the AVS Model(s) are consider light weight, but resonable. |

Personally Id go with the Toyos and the Advan model 7's VERY sweet looking and I was pretty close to picking those up.....instead, i went for the Volks though.
Hey Pole Position, what kinda car do u have? Not too often do u find guys with Advan's I only know a couple cars that have advan's on thier car (im sure there's more but its pretty rare to see).
Id go with any of the Advans just cuz of its rarity. Apparently a couple of guys have my rims now...but its still pretty rare. I told james to stop selling my rims but does he listen? NOOooooooo LOL |

Yup, next tire I get will be either the Toyos or the S0-3's. I dont think they make the S02 Pole position's anymore :(
Anyways, id say tires are pretty big.....dont cheap out! Or else get a harder compound so they last longer...hahaha.....mine seem to melt when its hot, its so soft! |

I actually ordered my MR7's through Crappy Tire cause they were by far the cheapest I could get them for. I bought the grip ( Yoko's ) thru Fastech on the southside, again the cheapest I could get them for. Fastech actaully said the price I paid for the Motegi's is pretty bang on for what they would have sold them for......so Fastech is my recommendation. |
|
|
| RX_AGENT |
| I would have to second fasttech south, I've bought my last 2 sets of rims and tires there. No one can beat their pricing on both occasions that I went shopping for rims/tires  |

I've had the S02's and they were straight bitchin! Awesome in the wet and dry, and were really responsive and quite and and and... they did it all.
Now I have the BFG G-Force KD's, which I'm not a really big fan of. Honestly the only thing they do better than the S02 is launching. They don't wheel hop.
Next tire I'll try is the falken. |

Falken Azenis'
TireTrends.com
located in Port Moody, BC
DiscountTireDirect.com
they also sell Azenis' but they're in the states, shipping to edmonton costs $78USD on top of tire price
(it's still cheaper than Tire Trends.com but i'm not sure what you do about customs) |

| redbaron go with a bfg comp tire.. i've got em on the back of my porsche and they help me hook on cold tarmac no problem... i'd swear by those tires... also buy em at goodyear cause they'll give you unlimited free flat repairs and I know the owners of the one in the west end.. competent guys now for rims... that's something i've never known but American Racing and Enkei are names I hear all the time... but trust me go with a bfg comp, avon or toyo and you won't be disappointed! |
|
|
| redbaron303 |
I've tried BFG comp t/a's (car) and Radial T/A's (truck) and they're awesome.....
I've tried goodyear twice and both times very dissapointed and not a cheap tire... :(
Providing my deal goes smooth on the new car, it'll come equiped with Toyo Proxes T1-S so I'll be able to make a decent comparision between the BFG's and the Toyo's....
My mom had a less expensive model of the Bridgestone on her car, my friends dad had em (not sure which one, but not Cheap) on his Porsche Turbo and they worked out really good...
I think I may try the bridgestones at some point because they have a 30 day "free" trial...
Enkie and AR rims are popular and have good quality, but I want to stand out of the bunch with a less common rim, which is where the cool $$$ Advan's come in, but who knows when... |

Get the HRE's, youd be big pimpin, those wheels are fawking high class and id give my left nut for a set. keep in mind that set of rims would probably cost you double what every other rim on here costs(maybe xcept the advans)
www.darius240z.com is a example of HRE's on a old school Z. :hitit: :hitit: |

Totally... I know the Z, the wheels, and the engine..... wouldn't mind that setup.... and HRE's would be different... but I dont have an arm and a leg to spare, at least with the Advans it's only an arm that's gotta go B)
We'll see what comes out of all this... I can't wait to actually start building my project or at least aquiring everything else that I need to do it.... :D (I have a very clean image in my head of every aspect or nearly every aspect of this car of mine....)
Looks similar to this but electric lime green and diff. rims :)

I have found one of the cheapest places for rims and rubber to be www.tiretrends.com. www.1010tires.com is a close second.
Both places are in B.C and shipping would be relatively cheap...
Personally i LOVE the ADR Kasai in H.M.C Black...

| Those are alot like the advans I was looking at... but probably not an $arm.00 :) I also found a pair of motegis that look similar too, and i like adr and motegi, so for money who knows I may just pick a set of those up...?! |

Ya.... NO!
Saving for new suspension and wheels is a bitch! PLus I also have to get my car painted next year too.... or else put her down to primmer... i'm not really a fan of the colour it's in right now, kind of a grey / blue/ rust.... Fix the rust first, make sure no safety parts need fixing (ie brakes) then upgrade my throttle body, bov, intake (deciding on bov, have rest)... then pick up my suspension and rims! |
|
|
| s2oooR |
| sounds like a lot of work....might as well just sell it and get a new car! |
|
|
| redbaron303 |
| But it isn't a lot of work! What needs to be done mechanically is nothing at this point! She's in perfect running condition... needs to have a little rust fixed to look great but that's it. The things I listed is just what I want to do to the car! I think it'll be fun, and why not mod somethign that's cheap and cool at the same time. I really couldn't afford a new honda or even a newer honda... damn good resale is the problem! I have a passion for Z's so... |

Here is some information I found on the wheels for my car... I have 84 AE wheels which are the same as 86's, which means they are 16x7 w/ a20mm offset, while the stock ones were 15 w/ 30mm offset.... So what offset do I need to go with for aftermarket rims??? I'm still kind of lost on this idea of offset and am finding it hard to look for rims w/ out knowing what i really need.
4 Lug bolt pattern: 4x4.5(4x114.3)
5 Lug bolt pattern: 5x4.5(5x114.3)
Studs are m12x1.25
Centerbore is 66.1mm
Stock wheel offset:
84-85 all(except AE): 30mm
86 non-turbo: 10mm
86 turbo: 20mm
87-89 Turbo: 30mm
87-89 non-turbo: 20mm
The stock tire size is 215-60-15 on 15x6.5 wheels, and 225-50-16 on the 16x7 wheels. |

| I don't know.... when the time comes I'll find my advans... but I was just wondering bout that offset.... I heard someone using 18mm offset on their 17x7's and they say it's working good... does it depend on what wheel you select??? |

| Nope. Kaltire, the boyz there never even heard of Advan, and that day I was there so were the yokohama reps and they mentioned there aren't any places in western canada that distribute them, so they'd have to be sourced from Japan or the States. FYI from them... I'm sure they know what they're talking about, althoug they said they're trying to have that line more readily avail. here... hhhhhhhmmmmmmmmmmm I love advan. |
