Good Tech question about apex seals - Click HERE for Original Thread

now
mazda shop manual says a apex seal is worn out when it wears off
1.5mm, my question is how much has to wear off to allow
the apex seal to flip out of the rotor?
If no one knows i will do some looking and see if i cant find one
that flipped out and measure it, i am sure i have one here somewhere.

thats a loaded question. I have seen 3 mill seals at under 6 mill tall that have not broke and also broken ones at 7.5 ... the two mill ones usally brake from 7.0 mill or less. not sure if ive ever seen any at less than 6.5 if your talking reuse id sugest cutting the factory spec down to .5 mill of use otherwise pitchem. I don't think you understood my question the top part of a 3 piece 2 mm seal
when it wears to a certain point they will simply fall out of the groove, I am just wondering
what that point is.

He pretty much told you. :P The seals are measured using the top and bottom of a 3 pc. seal. The top part of it will roll out of the groove when the top and bottom parts together measure 6.5mm or less. In terms of mileage or time for this to happen it varies greatly! 60,000km-300000km depending on maintenance and luck of the draw. Hope this clears it up for you.

karl i see what your sayn

 Shouldn't you know this stuff??? Or are you just lloking for cheap rebuild options? I know we've (Conroy and I) pulled apart a few cores that were totally runn down to <6mm. The top part of the 2 piece seal is like 3 or 4mm tall at that point and it wouldn't take much for it to roll out of the groove. B)

the reason I asked was because I just took a motor apart which
has never been opened and has 185000km on it,
the inside of the motor looks great I would never have guessed that
it would have had this many miles on it, but the apex seals
are some of the most worn that I have seen , even more so than
a motor I had that had the top part rolled out on.
I am guessing that it might have gone another 10,000km but
could have flipped a seal at any time.
these kind of miles out of a rotary I think are great, most I see
die long before this kind of miles.

the ones that I find the most interesting are the older 3 mill motors, karl and i just took a 13b se motor apart it had 206000km on the clock and the rotor housings look like new. a few years back i took apart a 81 12a with 315,000km and the seal had broke in one rotor but the housings were like new. then you pull apart a motor with 135,000km from a 88 and everthing is shit. still cant put my finger on how or what makes the difference?? the car wiht 315,000km drove from camrose to edm ever day for 6 years??? maybey thats the key. also i believe that who's driving has a lot to do with what it looks like inside the motor, I do not think that most rx7s are drivin hard enough to keep the carbon build up to a min, and that causes problems for the life span.

now
i dont think its carbon build up that causes most rotary motors to die:)
it would be people who rev the pi$$ out of them
or boost the nuts off of them with a shot of nos :)

Mine went 216k. I know what you're saying though. My rear rotor (other than around where the apex seals blew apart) looks pretty good. Same for the housing (minus the damage from it blowing up). The front housing/rotor looks damn good.
