Was just reading a thread off Honda-Tech and they were talking about how common it is to see an overweight/obese person.
Someone popped the statistic that 65% of Americans are overweight or obese....
Now having not been to the States in many man years, is there any truth to the above?
When you went down south, did you notice an increase in the number of "husky" people?
This isn't meant to offend anyone, I'm just curious as to whether or not obesity is really THAT prevalent in the USA. |

Definitely. It's actually pretty disgusting.
But walk into a grocery store and watch what people buy, then you'll quickly realize why they're so fat. |

| There are chemicals placed in food which cause people to be hungrier(addicted) and fatter. Look at the European countries the obesity rates are nowhere near as high as the States. As for Canada we arent that far behind them I'm sure. |

Husky? You have an exceptional gift for understatement. |

If you think that is the primary reason for their lardiness you've never been to a Country Kitchen. :p
I've had (and this is not a lie) a meal of:
Country fried chicken
Chicken fried steak
French fries
Fried okra
and for desert, you guessed it, fried ice cream. |

I was a fishing guide catering primarily to american clients, and for the most part, I'd say they were on par with Canada, a few bigger guys and some skinny guys.
But I had this one guy, he was about 6'5", and he seriously must have weighed in at 450lbs. Former power lifter that had let himself go. The guy had trouble getting in and out of the boat (despite the large amount of muscle under the large amounts of fat), and wheezed when he breathed. For lunch each day (shore lunch, fried fish), He would seriously eat one and a half 12" diameter frying pans FULL of fish, with either fried potatos or beans, and corn. The only reason that he didn't eat more was because I had to have some as well. He would have easily eaten 2-3 lbs of fish (sometimes just fried, other times breaded or battered, and not a 2-3 lb fish, but actually 2-3 lbs of fish net weight before cooking).
When he sat in the boat (him and I were the only two in it) I had to move his seat closer to center so the boat wouldnt tip, and I still had to sit on the gunwhale to counter balance. A couple of things you should know:
Boats were 18' aluminum, with 2x 25 Hp 2 stroke motors on the back. I could usually get one 25 Hp motor to plane even with 3 guys in the boat, but he was soo heavy that I couldn't do it unless I used both motors. Once I was up to plane I was about the same speed as other boats, but it was quite a load to get up. I also weigh 230 Lbs, so it's not like I'm a little guy. But sitting on the opposite side of the boat on the seat wasn't enough I still had to sit on the gunwhale to counter.
I would have moved his seat right to the middle, but his chest and arms were so big that he wouldn't have been able to manouver to reel in a fish properly to the side of the boat. When landing a fish I had to get him to bring the fish to the opposite side of the boat from him, otherwise I would have to get on the same side of the boat as him, and we were about 1" from the waters edge.
Disgusting and the guy tipped me $25 for the week (normal is $200 american, his was Canadian), and the best for last:
he was a physical education teacher at an elementary school!!

Get down through Texas, Lousiana, Mississippi, and Alabama...
I've found that the coastal areas and northern states aren't as bad, but boy when you get down to the good ol' home cookin of the south.... its just like .
lol, somebody make a joke about the bible belt holding in the bible gut. :p |

It is unbelievable.
I started working down here in Cleveland, Ohio and the number of obese people is phenomenal.
Every other person is obese, and 1/4 of those people are morbidly obese.
The number of people we operate on here that are OVER 100 kg is probably 50-60%. :( It is disgusting.
In particular to Cleveland I have noticed that EVERYBODY loves CHEESE, and extra cheese on everything.
"Can I have extra cheese with my tank of premium?" hahaha
j/k
But in all seriousness
1. FASTFOOD is a way of life
2. The portions are HUGE in an obnoxious way.
3. People have no shame about looking like fat pigs, and killing themselves with being fat.
Everything you read and hear about is true :( |

Oh, GAWD, Country Kitchen is so disgusting!!! The food is swimming in grease, and the people that go there are just pigs! It's an all-you-can-eat buffet of southern fried food and you can smell the grease when you walk in the front door.
I ate in one in some town on the Interstate between Nashville and Memphis, and I was so disgusted with the whole scene, I practically couldn't eat. There was MORBIDLY obese people all around our table. The table right in front of me had 6 people sitting there. Mother, father and 4 kids, from about 8 to 16. Each one of them had to weight at least 250 pounds (even the 8 year old!!!) The father easily weighed 400 pounds. And they were just chomping down on plates piled higher with food than I've ever seen. I couldn't believe the chairs were standing up to this abuse. I'll never go in another Country Kitchen as long as I live............. |

| I dont know why there is so much talk about the States when obesity is already a problem right here in our backyard. Take a look at the number of people of average weight and those who might be considered overweight. Its easily more than 50%. |
