Does any one here know what I have to do to become and architect or where I go to do that? I'm thinking about switching my focus at school... and this is something that interrests me, so any info would be appreciated!

Thanks

Well, I almost went to university (U of T) to take the architecture course. I didn't feel like spending the rest of my life paying for my education so I opted for the community college architectural technology program.

The difference being is that an architect creates the design and the technologist makes the design functionable and buildable (similar to an engineer).

It was a very good program, 3 year co-op of studies and I did get a job right after I graduated. Actually, it was one of my co-op jobs but it wasn't in my field of studies. But at that point, who cares since you're working and making cash.

This programm is in the top 10 hardest courses to take in college due to its large work load, stress level and high drop out rate.

In my opinion, I think I made a very wise choice even thought I'm not in my field. The down side of being a technologist is the pay. I think a entry level graduate would make under $25,000 a year in an architectural office due to no experience. I'm sure with time, you can make alot more or even do freelance work. The options are limitless.

If you want any information, just let me know

I want something where I can be creative and possible have a new project every once in a while.....

"science" type jobs really aren't me.... Plus I think architecture would offer me a little more freer lifestyle... just my opinion though...

i dunno what you've heard.. but if you aren't a strong archetect and didn't attend a respectable post sec. institute.. you're not gonna get those kool jobs you see in the magazines.

i know several ppl who are in architecture and they don't seem to be having too much fun with their jobs... cause they design boring commercial buildins and such.

if you really want to be creative.. nothing beats the arts.

want new stuff... research or do ecology.

don't go to those community colleges if you wanna take architecture. do Civ. Engg and do it right.

but seriously dude... don't try to take the easy route

no matter what people say about how you can get just as good as a job and you get the job quicker. plus education costs less.

on your resume... it makes a difference if one says:
"University of...."
rather than
"Community College of..."

you don't see them offering Medicine or Engineering Physics at NAIT.

actually.. I am taking a course at Grant mac.. and its way more recongnized then anything you can get in the simalar field then the courses you find at the U.. and the reason is we actually spend almost all of our time with hands on real life style learning.. so we can actaully apply our smarts.. at the University all you get is endless boaring lectures..

I am taking the Visual Communications and Design course at grant mac.. its pretty brutal though.. LOTS of drawing LIKE 65+hrs a week with all the homework

I know the name on the paper is important. Right now I'm starting my BComm at GMCC, downtown campus.... there is no way I want their name on my degree... it's not prestigious enough for anyone who's hiring, even though i give the school more credability than the UofA just because they have the smaller, cheaper classes which in turn allows you learn better (at least for me, I don't learn well in an auditorium of 400ppl).

In anycase it was just a thought, and you're right you have ot be with a great firm or just be great yourself to pull the jobs from the magazines... That goes for any degree/diploma based program, you have to be top of your game to get the good jobs/contracts/whatever... I hope to be there someday.

This is something that has always tweaked my interest and I figured I should look into it, which I'm still going to do. Who knows maybe it's something for me to do when I've finished my BComm. Hell I even thought about taking Mechanics at Nait for the fun of it :D
