Hard drive capacity way off?! - Click HERE for Original Thread

LudeDude19
ok to make this short, i got a 200GB hard drive installed yesterday and when i click on it and read its TOTAL CAPACITY it says its only good up to 127GB...wtf is going on with that?!

PraxRX7
There is a bug in windows that makes it only read that.

If it is a Western Digital Drive, I know you can go to thier site and download "DATA LIFEGUARD TOOLS" and it will set up the drive properly for you.

For Maxtor:

http://maxtor.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/...php?p_faqid=960

Big Drive Patch (Maxtor, should work for others):

http://www.maxtor.com/portal/site/m...p;downloadID=11

Make sure you have all the newest windows updates.

LudeDude19
hey thanks for your help

unfortunately; when i go to run the big drive enable program it says this:
"Support is currently enabled for 48-bit Logical Block Addressing (LBA) for ATAPI disk drives. You do not need to run this registry update. Click 'OK' to exit."

so now i'm really confused!

Qoo
did you partition it yet?

LudeDude19
here's the scoop

old hard drive is 80Gb and HAD the OS on it
new hard drive is supposed to be 200Gb and it now has the OS on it
old hard drive is currently empty
new hard drive is running the OS and runs at 127Gb

i have no idea how to partition and all that jazz

my room mate said there is a way to manually change the registry so that it will recognize that the drive is ACTUALLY 200Gb and not just 127Gb...any thoughts?

PraxRX7
Ok, you probably need to put in your old Hard drive, with the Old OS and reformat and partition the 200 GB drive as a 200 GB drive.

Right now the 200 GB drive is probably formatted and partitioned as a 127 GB drive (windows setup wouldnt have been able to see all 200GB most likely)

You might be able to use the utilities from the manufacturer to create another partition out of the remaining space on the HDD, if not...

Put in your old HDD and old OS, download the Maxtor or WesternDigital (or whatever manufacturer your drive is) utilities and use those utitlities to format and partition the drive.

Maxtor is MAX BLAST UTILITIES i believe.
WDigital is Datalifeguard tools

Then install the OS on the drive.

Sux, but thems the breaks.

Good luck...

Sorry i forgot to mention you have one alternative that MIGHT work.

If you go into your Control Panel, go into "COMPUTER MANAGEMENT" and then under your Disk Management, there is a chance that you might be able to see the second part of your drive in there, at which point you should be able to assign it a drive letter and format it.

Good Luck.

LudeDude19
BOTH hard drives are currently installed

the old hard drive has no OS on it...its blank right now
the new hard drive (200GB one) has everything on it..including OS

the device manager didn't help me any

PraxRX7
Well if you cant figure it out, PM me and I can always come take a look.

Either that or I can take over your computer through MSN and try to do it...let me know.

gerrycurl
