Law on Tail lights - Click HERE for Original Thread

I'm not talking about the Altezza's or clear tail lights. But lets say a "modified" original taillight. A partly painted taillight? Like the amber to white or black
I saw these and thought they were nice.

White and red

Black and red
Black and red 2
Black and red 3

Damn that looks good. It looks so clean and stock. Nice.

It's my understanding that whenever you paint your tailights you're reducing the light output of your oem tallights.

Anyone who's seen me car knows I'm guilty of this too.

I think within reason it is safe to do so provided you leave some areas at original brightness.

I could be wrong too :)

As long as the car still meats the SAE and DOT specifications you would be fine... I am not sure if that would though. DOT rulings are based on a rating that makes it so that tails have to have a certain light output and some have to have reflectors in them depending on model.. that tail light setup is likely a violation... but its just a fixa ticket =). Hopefully anyway.. make it look stock and most cops will just carry on there merry way..

Probably the easiest way of answering this question is to point you to the applicable sections in the Highway Traffic Act. Take a look at Sections 26 - 38. Happy reading!!!
