which engine to go with? - Click HERE for Original Thread

jrm991
ok so here is my dilema. im new to the sport compact market been around the muscle car scene ever since i can remember and have built 6 or 7 vehicles. so now im looking good and hard at honda for various reasons. 1 the price of gas, reliablility and they haul. so with all that being said i need to know what i sould be using for an engine. these are the ones i would prefer b18c1-b18c5. im looking at either an integra or civic. so now im looking for some information on were to find parts first off the engine would prefer a vtec engine but will consider most everything. im looking to creat a sleeper, somthing that can dominate on the track but still be a daily driver type deal. so tell me what do you guys think??

MR. BATES
For track\street\dd? IMO I would go with the gsr mated to either a b16 tranny or itr tranny. with some simple bolt ons you can equal or better the performance of a b18c5, and its a tiny bit cheaper. performance is more impressive especially in a lighter bodied civic.

Its also much easier to swap into 92+ cars as swapping is alot cheaper because they will just "bolt in".

Hope this steers u in the right direction.

i wouldn't choose a civic...but since thats ur choose I have just a couple questions, r u going to b build up the engine or just bolt ons? how much power r u looking for/how fast do u wanna go?, daily driver as in winter driven? what kinda racing do u wanna dominate?drag ,auto-x? just some info needed to make an suggestion, thanx

sould have clarified. im looking to build the engine completely im looking to use a turbo and nos setup. and as far as winter driving thats what my sunfire is for. but im looking for some were around the 400-500 horse mark if possible (out of reach???) like i said im new to the sport compact game. what other engine/chasis/ combos sould i be looking at in your opinoin???

95IntegraRS
B18C - fully built, with a turbo... you can get 400-500 horsepower. But its gonna cost you. And its gonna be useless on the street.

jrm991
that is a very good point so mabe im shooting to high mabe i sould be going for 300-400???? i need it to be a street strip car well for obvious reasons.

95IntegraRS
Your general T3/T4 setup on a B18C will put you around 250whp or so. Should be good enough for your needs. 300-400whp in a Civic is pointless, it overwhelms the tires, regardless of suspension.

jrm991
so what would you suggest i use for internals and such.... keep in mind im a muscle car guy and new to the sc sceen. also were would i find such parts and what turbo would you recomend?

95IntegraRS
Turbo manifold, turbo, intercooler, etc. All the goodies. A tuning device. I would recommend initially tuning with a AFC computer and then getting someone in Calgary to dyno tune it for the numbers your looking for on either Uberdata/Crome/TurboEdit. These are all free tuning software that acts as a stand alone based on a chip. With this setup, using a T3/T4 56 trim you should be able hit the 250whp on 9 psi. You should be able to tune for a couple more pounds of boost on 91 octane. That should have you sitting around the 275 mark.

jrm991
aight thanks alot man. i cant wait to find me an engine and get started on this beast. so any specific brand names i sould be using for best performance??

notaturbotalon
Look into an H22, can't go wrong with more displacement, won't be as simple as dropping in one of the B series engines, but your initial hp goals could be reached while still having a streetable car.

SilviaDrifter
B20/LS vtec
than bore it out to 2.3 liters with titanium internals
and individual throttle bodies
haha ull have a 2.3 liter B series engine...now that wud be sweet

MR. BATES
I agree with 95integrars. Do you even know what 200 or even 300hp feels like in a civic? Especially with a turbcharger you will be making more tq with any NA engine thrown in there.

Unless your car is like a super drag car or something i wouldnt even bother. 200-280 is very fast for a civic and would be ideal imo. you can prolly hit 12's with that much power.

Since you want to go turbo I would suggest b18a\b or b20 block then boost. Instead of buying a vtec motor which costs quite abit more, you can use that money to sleeve, pistons whatever the hell u want to do to support more boost and it will still be cheaper than the gsr or itr motor. if u fell you are not satisfied yet, slap on a vtec head and make more power.

Good luck!

my advice is choose another platform for a car, since ur a muscle car guy go with a rwd car, trust me fwd's r useless with power, my advice would be to get an ol dastun or 240z and do a 350 swap, haven't seen too many up here but its done in the states quite abit, then ur still kinda in ur neck of the woods, tuning is simple and you'd have a pretty sweet ride as far as i'm concerned, just my 2cents, it would prolly b faster and cheaper to build than the civic u want.

Thats a pretty bold statement there. Yes we all know the potential of rwd, but fwd is still quite capable.

Cheaper? I dont think so. Unless you give me a price breakdown, which will make me think otherwise.

a 300hp fwd civic would be quite useless on the street compared to a 300 hp rwd 350powered 240z, don't u think? fwd's r good b/c they're usually lightweight and nimble..but if ur considering building a high horsepower car why not make it rwd? i'm just saying if he doesn't care if its a fwd or rwd set-up why not go with the supeirior design(uh-oh, i said it lol) as for the cheaper issue...don't tell me it's cheaper to build a honda engine than a chevy engine...not possible...as for swap difficulty, theres forums dedicated to the swap http://forums.hybridz.org/ and Jags That Run have conversion manuals for the swap aswell.

http://forums.780tuners.com/showthr...;threadid=28563 ...take one of these....and add one of these http://www.buysell.com/root/detail/...fits_88_95.aspx

jrm991
yes that would be a cool car to buld. and yes i have no idea what that kind of power in a civic is like. but based on the advise given here im going with the b18a i can get one for dirt cheap from a friend. he smashed up his 93 integra. will keep you guys posted on my progress.

You might also check out the outfit in Calgary that specializes in really quick mid-80's supras - this is a relatively cost effective build for the potential of the car.
