Dirt Autoslalom Saturday Oct 1st - Click HERE for Original Thread

rexxrally
The Edmonton Rally Club is hosting a dirt autoslalom on the gravel parking lot at Bud Park on Saturday Oct 1st. It's exactly the same as a regular autoslalom event (pylons, start/stop box) but it's on dirt/gravel, which adds an element of difficulty, and proves who has the best car control abilities.

At the end of the day, there will be an optional fun event, the "So You Think You Can Park" competition. Check out this video:
http://members.shaw.ca/dave.sharp/S...kYouCanPark.wmv
Whoever can emulate the maneuver the best (in between pylons, not other parked cars obviously!) will win the 50/50 pot.

Cost:
$30 Edmonton Rally Club Members
$40 Other ASN Canada FIA affiliated club members
$50 General Public
$5 Two runs in the SYTYCP competition

9:00 - 10:30 Registration and tech
10:30 drivers meeting
11:00 – first car on track
16:00 - event finish
16:01 - "So You Think You Can Park" competition

CanuckDave
sounds like a good time, I'll try to make it out if I'm not working

gab
how many runs do you figure we'll get in for 50 bucks?

rexxrally
Guaranteed minimum 5 runs

gab
alright i'll throw on the gravel tires and come play...... what does it take to join the rally club?

rexxrally
$50 annual membership fee, but it's calendar year, so don't bother till Jan 1

Demolisher
How do u figure front wheel drivers do?

gab
i think they will do alright with a little e-brake love. like he said, it'll take alot of skill to keep it under control and on the track. it'll be super fun to watch.....don't wear white!!!

Demolisher
Alrite, I ll just come to have some fun :)
See how my lil echo hatch does rally style!

Demolisher
Another question, If i only stay for like 3 hours, how many runs can i get in?

rexxrally
If you're on a limited time factor, we'll try to accomodate you to get all your runs in before you leave. FWD cars are the second fastest group out there, after the AWD cars, but faster than the RWD cars

Demolisher
Hey i have another question. I am told on my echos forum that i should probably put on painters tape to protect my fenders. ive been in gravel parking lots b4 but have had no problems. Where can i get this painters tape?
thanks!

dc2696
how do the 4x4 dually trucks usually do?:D

rexxrally
Painter's tape? Never heard of it. Perhaps you should go to a paint store, I dunno.........

Dually 4X4's? Ahhh, no. They wouldn't do too good. They're too big and wide to fit through the cones on the course (pretty tight for them).

too tight! well i enjoy a challenge:cool:

So is it just one group cuz we dont have many cars or is it actually going to be divided into awd, fwd, and rwd.

rexxrally
No, there's going to be quite a few cars coming. A lot of the rally cars in Edmonton and Calgary are coming for a final tuneup before the national Pacific Forest Rally next month. And a lot of rally enthusiasts (who don't have rally cars) are also coming out to thrash their cars a bit, too.

We're going to be running 3 separate classes for AWD, RWD, and FWD. And if as many rally cars come out as I'm hearing are coming, we might even split some of the classes into rally cars and non-rally cars, as well........

louren22
Whos coming out for one last run before PFR?

rexxrally
Well, the new rally car won't be running in time, but I'm bringing out my street Neon with winter tires

got_ae86
Is the event on rain or shine?

G

rexxrally
You betcha. Real rallyists will run in anything..........

Painters tape is masking tape...painters use it to mask off an area they dont want painted.....The mask will protect the paint....masking tape = painters tape. It does not stick so hard that it will damage the painted surface of what you mask off. Easy to clean off your car does not leave residue it on for a short time.

OH, I am not clear on if we can watch for free. If I bring a car load the fee is just for the car entered? And if I choose just to watch is there a fee?

CanuckDave
well I was really hoping to make it out to this, but I'm scheduled to work all day, unless I can change shifts with somebody I won't be able to make it out :( next time I guess..

Yes, spectating is free. You only have to pay to enter the competitions. The cost is per competing driver entered, and more than 1 driver can drive the same car.

Thanks to Dave, Mike and Marcel for another successful dirt autocross event.....your efforts are much appreciated.
Now all we need is to convince more people to show up and enter......i don't think most people realize that the courses are over 2km in length and take over 3 minutes to complete one run.....more fun/$ than usual......

Who won the parking competition?

Anyone have any pictures of the event......PM me if you do.....Thanks!!

rexxrally
The parking competition was a blast! It was hilarious watching everybody trying to do it, because nobody had any previous experience at it. Consequently, we all looked like newbies! We had some fairly good attempts, but we also had some real bad ones. I think I had one of the worst ones, when I ran "over the curb about 6 feet and mowed down all the pedestrians on the sidewalk".

In the end, it came down to a 1-run "cone off" between Mike, Charles and myself. Mike came out on top of us with something like a total of 55 inches from perfect.

There are some pictures on the Edmonton Rally Club website. You can find them here:

Hopefully more people will come out for the Nov. 13th event!

Demolisher
Wow, good event guys. So different from street auto x thats for sure! Now i have a long way to improve on things like pedal control, track patterns, and my heel & toe did nothing cuz i kept hitting the limiter and spinning the tires.

Anyways I learned a heck of a lot and ill probably show up for the next one.
Great event and thanks to all those that supported it.

rallycrossGTX
Does anyone know who the photographer was standing on the "grassy knoll"? We're looking for pictures of any of the GTX's........Thanks!!

Marcel gave him his business card, and asked him to forward his photos to us. Stay tuned. If I hear about any more photos, I will pass the news along.
