no spare keys..what to do? - Click HERE for Original Thread

Seks
Bought a new (used) car recently and it only came with one master key which has the chip or whatever. As far as I understand, in order to install a starter (Compustar), I need a spare key for it.

What options do I have???????? Get one duplicated?

I'm pretty sure dealerships can cut keys and program them, so just hit up your nearest dealership and see how much it'll run you.

keys like that arent cheap, i think they go for about $80 each(i know of a few people who needed them before, but i forgot the price they said)

BananaBoy
$80 and you have to leave your car there for a few hours for Hondas.

if i recall correctly, all you need if ID, proof of ownership and maybe one or two other things i forgot about, and theyll make you a new key on the spot. i see no reason why they would need to have your car for a few hours. i also read an article about how those requirements i mentioned got some guys call stolen(long story short, id theft can equal car theft as well)

You usually don't have to lose your key. Sometimes just the chip, and most times nothing at all. And depending on your car, you might be able to just order the chip which will cost considerably less than a new key. BMW charges 50 bucks for the chip (which you need for a starter) or 150 for the full key/remote.

mr_sars
Well you might have to leave it at the dealership for a few hours because there are other people that have appointments before you. It would probably take a mechanic about a half an hour to reprogram a new key for you.

:dunno: I don't get it, if you can buy a car that has a chipped key, why can't you dish out the coin to have another chipped key cut for it? It's like buying a 60K SUV and then bitching that gas prices are too high...or buying a brand new luxury car and not throwing in premium in order to save a few bucks at the pump each time.

You can get a spare door key cut for cheap but it won't start the car. I did that with my truck. Sounds stupid but came in handy. Real long story.

As for a chipped key if you have 2 of them already it's cheaper. Just buy the key get it cut and you can do it yourself, or even the shop will program it for free. Only takes like a minute. That's if you have 2 keys already.

If you have only 1 key they need to hook into your computer and program your new key like that and they will charge you a shop rate for that. $$$ I only had one key for my truck. My spare ended up costing about $100.

As for needing a spare key for the compustar. When I had mine installed they only used the key to program the module for it. Never had to sacrafice my key. Can't remember if they needed 1 or 2 keys to do that programing. I think we only gave them one.

at alberta honda, it can cost up to $80. and it takes a while for the technician to program your key. most of the time is cause the technician is busy. so make an appointment a few days before you plan on going in.

Some cars you can just get a new key, then to reprogram it you just put it in the ignition, turn it on then step outside the vehicle, close the door, and use the master key in the door, turn it one way or another for a few seconds, and hold it...and it will program the key in the ignition.

Strange as it is to go through all that...

It really depends on the car and what you have.

He wants a new starter so the key with out the chip will not help. And most key makers don't have the blanks for new cars beacuse the're all chipped.

Some cars come with a "decoder" Often a red key in a sealed package. If you have a decoder, then your car will not ned re-programing.

Some car come with a dogtag with a number. If you have that number then the dealer can make a new one fairly fast.

If you don't have any of that, you will have a prove you own the car and you car will need to be reprogramed. Just having a black key will not really help you much.

Every maker has their own system and that changes from year to year.

My 01 Prelude came with a red key (decoder), a grey key (valet) and 2 black keys.

If I bought a used car with chipped keys and I only got one, I'd wonder where the other key went...

they should have the code to tell them what to program it with just bring it in with your vehicle info and it should be a problem.

Twisted-1
The code you get with the vehicle is just used to cut the key. Not to program it. Also a regular key without a chip can be cut. It is just a blank for an older model without the chip.

For programing on a Mazda you use only the egnition. Key 1 turn. Theft light goes off. Turn in key 2. Theft light goes out. Put in new key. Turn and it gets programed. You never even really start the vehicle.

At least that how it works for my Ford I had and my Mazda. The key code was for the Mazda.

Hey, totally new to the site. Just thought I'd say I have the same problem. One key for my 1998 bmw and no remote keyless entry or even control of the alarm. Any ideas what bavaria would charge?

SilverZ24
^ Edmonton BMW charges $50 for a valet key and ~$150 for a remote key.

Bavaria has never treated me nearly as good as Edmonton BMW so I wouldn't recommend them.

valet key with the chip? wow...that's a first where things are cheaper than Honda's :p

gab
well there is a w ay to do it. get a couple regular keys without the chip cut. then use the chipped key in the bypass module for the compustar. but instead of activating the module with the ground out when running wire, just ground it so it is bypassed permanently. and then when you get the compustart installed, use the starter kill wire from the compustar to open the ground circuit that is going to the bypass module. so when you arm the compustar the factory starter kill is still engaged.

Yeah, that is a valet key with a chip. It is just a cheap plastic key and doesn't have the remote control built in and the rechargable battery.

motorwerks
Cool, thanks I'll rip over to Edmonton BMW asap and see if I can get me a remote key. Thanks again.

Takes a day or two though and you have to sign something and show your registration. So hopefully you aren't in too much of a rush.
